Weight loss drug thread for usage advice (not debating)

I’ve lost almost 19 pounds in three and a half months, on phentermine. I’m really happy! I was on a plateau for a little while, probably because I have tendonitis and can’t work out. But now I’m losing again.

A simple thing you might try is increasing your water intake. Doesn’t sound like it would make a difference, but my dietician emphasizes its importance.

That’s a great suggestion. Several years ago, my husband was told he HAD to drink a lot of water to avoid getting another kidney stone. He took the advice to heart. He sets aside four 16-ounce cups of water in the morning and makes sure to drink them during the day. At the beginning, he set an alarm to go off so he wouldn’t forget. He was annoyed he had to do this, but it turned out to be a blessing - he lost weight and says he’s never felt better. He’s constantly telling everyone they should do the same!

Me too. Not the work part but the plateau part. I know I need to increase protein, veggies and water but I don’t do the cooking and DH doesn’t have a weight problem. I really don’t like making salads either. Still working on it.

I have a question, I’m supposed to take the dose today, but my husband is away this week and he’s the one who fills the needle. My eyesight isn’t the best, I’ve already broken 2 needles trying to fill it. I think this is week 11. GLP-1, can I skip a week?

I had to skip a week because I needed a colonoscopy and they require you to do that. It wasn’t a problem for me.

Re drinking water:

  1. I find that drinking through a straw helps increase my water consumption.
  2. I use a little flavoring (Crystal light, lemonade powder, whatever) which also makes me want to drink more.

Thank you everyone for suggestions! I appreciate it. I admit, I was pretty much having a pity party this morning. I need to get past that and get moving.

Excellent suggestions @ClassicMom98! You did remember correctly, I’m taking public transit (metro train, not bus, but same thing really) this summer. I’m not eager to walk the extra distance in the morning, when I need to get to work faster and not be sweaty when i arrive, but I could totally do it in the afternoon. And I can definitely do the stairs in the building. It’s hotter than hades this week, but when it’s not there’s lots of place to walk in the area, I just need to actually DO it. I changed jobs in September and my current workplace is much less crazy than my last, and it would be very ok to take a break for a walk during the day, I just haven’t done it. I need to adapt to this healthier lifestyle (as opposed to my old gig, where we were basically expected to always eat at our desk and work through lunch).

And thank you @college_query for the reminder about water. I don’t like water and I know I don’t drink enough of it. I just need to put forth the effort and maybe flavor it up just a little so it’s more palatable to me.

@Singersmom07 - thank you for the commiseration! This is the thing, I know what I need to do, I just don’t really want to do it. When I first started losing weight I did a great job cutting out all the carbs that sneak into my diet (carbs and cheese, my two favorite things) and I’ve just let them back in. Not in the same quantities, but I know I really need to limit them again to try to have more success. Of course, I say this after eating leftover Thai food for lunch (which had a fair amount of rice… sigh.)

Apologies for butting in, but rice isn’t bad in limited-to-moderate quantities.

Rice has about 4-5 grams of protein per cup. It’s not protein-rich by any standard, but it’s not w/o its positives, like being low fat, high water content, some protein, source of energy, etc.

One way I make water more palatable is by keeping it in my huge water bottle and filling it with ice and a squeeze of lemon. For some reason having it super cold makes it more enjoyable to drink and my water bottle keeps the ice frozen for hours. I too could go hours and hours without drinking anything but I do notice improved energy and stay fuller, longer. Sparkling water satisfies my itch for something different.

Will be taking my first dose of Wegovy 7/18 (I want to start the Friday after my birthday). Has anyone worked with an online dietician while on Wegovy? Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get into anyone local. I want to make sure I’m eating enough, hitting the right macros and covering anything I may not know about using this medication. My doctor really only told me “stay away from fat and sugar” when I asked her about side effects.

Also, does anyone use any of the apps like Shotsy to track?

I’ve lost 21 pounds on phentermine since the middle of March. I’m still really happy with the med.

I took advantage of Prime days to order smaller (8 inch) dinner plates.

The Mayo Clinic Diet suggests Berry Street dietitians for individuals following their diet plan who need additional support. I haven’t worked with an online dietitian but see a diabetes educator at the hospital. She suggests that my plate be half green vegetables, one quarter lean protein and one quarter complex carbohydrate for diabetes management. I do use Ozempic as well. I’m sure my diet isn’t perfect but following those guidelines has minimized the side effects I had previously.

I am taking Wegovy and I follow Weight Watchers for GPL-1 users. . They emphasize protein to reduce muscle loss. The amount depends on your weight. 90+ grams. And vegetables and fruits and water. Lean meats, fish, poultry. They have simplified their system recently.

I do use Shotsy, though I didn’t for the first few months till they came out with an Android version. I don’t formally track macros and calories on it, though you can. Just shots and weight. I like the app a lot.

I haven’t used a dietician, but done extensive reading on best practices. I emphasize protein, fiber, and liquids. Keep a very loose calorie count in my head, but I don’t often weigh and measure, except maybe for ingredients like in a smoothie.

For me, trying to follow very specific numbers, weigh everything, etc, would be too anxiety provoking, and too much like diet culture. (That’s for me–definitely helpful for many people).

Since I went up to 10mg last week, it’s more a matter of eating enough, rather than too much!

When I was prescribed Wegovy, my health care provider included two resources and I met online with both of them separately. One was the doctor who prescribed the Wegovy and checked the medical stuff, the other was a dietician who helped me with information about getting enough protein, drinking enough water, getting exercise, food suggestions, etc.

They also sent some physical resources, such as a binder with food nutrition, recipes, trackers, etc. but to be honest I didn’t really use it.

I’ve used tools like MyFitnessPal in the past but haven’t while on Wegovy. It might be helpful to make sure I’m hitting my required protein intake. But to be honest I feel yucky if I don’t eat right and that’s been motivation enough for me!

Hi! How was the move to 10?
I’ve been on 5 since the beginning of December and with slowing weight loss, I think my Dr might want to bump me up at my next appointment. My insurance will only allow 1 month on 7.5, so I’m a little freaked out at the thought of moving so quickly up to twice my current dose. I definitely still feel the effects at 5. I’m worried I won’t remember to eat on 10!

This drives me crazy. Why are insurance companies and not doctors making these decisions.
