I’m 5’-6 1/2", currently 140 pounds - I’m hoping to lose 10 to 20 pounds over the next year. I have clothes from sizes 6 to 10 in my closet that fit pretty well. When I weighed 115 back in high school I wore a 6. My legs are pretty long - but because I don’t wear heels many pants are too long. The LLBeans medium long length is perfect for me. I’ve got zippo interest in designer clothes.

63.5 inches tall here. I sometimes have to get the petite or short size clothing items further shortened. I don’t like to wear heels.

5’ 1" here; I used to be 5’ .75" – which means I have to weigh less to be the same size I used to be! I have been a Petite 4 for most of my adult life; I used to be a Petite 6 in my twenties when I was a bit smaller and before vanity sizing. My scale is off, but I think I weigh around 113 - 115 or so. I’ve lost around 8 or 9 pounds by eating mashed cauliflower in place of rice and cutting out the ice cream. The weight loss has been almost entirely in my waist, so it means my once snug clothes fit better.

Eighteen year old DD is now 5’ .75" and probably weighs about five pounds less than I do – but what a difference in appearance! She is an inverted triangle, i.e. an athletic build with super broad shoulders. I am a long-waisted hourglass with pear tendencies in the thighs and carry most of my weight in my legs. We can wear some of the same tops and jackets because what I take up in the boobs she takes up in the shoulders. My waist is probably smaller so we can share belts. The tight clothes she wears (or wants to wear) give her curves, so they definitely let me know what NOT to wear!

The thing that really amazes me is that I can wear the same jeans as my 6’-1" tall son, though they tend to be cut looser in the leg than I like.

There was an episode of Will and Grace about men wearing women’s jeans because they are cut better.

Me too…but I have very long legs and a somewhat short torso…my inseam is 32 inches…at least. Petite slacks are WAY too short but petite TOPS are just right. A regular size top is always too long waisted for me. I have a lot of trouble buying dresses…petites are too short in length but the waist is in the right spot. Regular sizes are just right in the length but too long waisted. I usually go with the petites in dresses.

Agree about the size changes. I’m really about the same size I was years ago now…but believe me…I did NOT wear a size 6 then.

CC,
You and I are the same height but you are already WAY below my goal weight. I am around 125 and am hoping to get down to 121. When I was in my twenties, before kids I was lucky to get to 100 lbs and wore a petite 4. Now I wear a petite 6 or even 8 which, is really like a ten or twelve I’m guessing :(.

I seem to be getting smaller through the hips and waist but my weight doesn’t change much. Does muscle really weigh more than fat or is that something that we tell each other to prevent us from jumping of a bridge?

Absolutely the same volume of muscle weighs more than fat - take a look at the first 55 seconds of this: [5 lbs of Fat vs. 5 lbs of Muscle - YouTube](<a href=“5 lbs of Fat vs. 5 lbs of Muscle - YouTube”>5 lbs of Fat vs. 5 lbs of Muscle - YouTube) So sure we can all tell ourselves that we’ve gained some muscle weight and lost even more fat weight than the scale total.

All of you seem to be way below my weight! Most of you were/are starting where I’d love to end - and even starting lower than I ever was as an adult. But so far I’m the tallest by a half inch. :p

thumper - I’m also short waisted and being big busted I have no desire to tuck shirts in at the waist - at best I might belt a longer top and blouson. I have also tried petite sizes on rare occasion to get the waist at the right place, but only with longer garments.

Thanks, Marilyn! I feel better.

Oh…NO big bust here…just a high waist and long legs.

Marilyn, I’m 5’7" too. This week I weigh 119-120 (if my scales are correct). I was a pear shaped (thunder thighs) 130 in college and distinctly remember wearing size 13/14 jeans. Got married after soph. year (same weight) in a size 10 wedding dress. I’m sure sizing has changed. My current size 6 jeans look like what 10’s used to look like. When I look in the mirror, I see a medium size person but when shopping end up buying single digit numbers that I’ve never bought even in h.s. when I weighed 120-125.

Thumper, consider yourself lucky. :)

I recall I wore size 8 back in the good old days. I think I weighed 115 lb or so. I have heavy bones (darn Mongolians!) - did not bode well for competitive swimming, but it was OK for running and skiing. As I grew larger, size 8 seemed to grow with me. :)

I was 5’8" and 140 in college and that was a size 16.

Marilyn, I’m still looking at changing the first digit! Have dropped three sizes so far. Have enjoyed shopping my closet lately.

Hey, EPTR, the last time I saw 100 lb. was when I was ten years old! I was never athletic in HS or college (no Title 9 in those days!) and was on the plumper side – FOR THOSE DAYS. Now, I probably would be considered regular unless you were to compare me to immigrant Asians.

Ever try on vintage clothing? The fit is very, very different. The difference in cut can’t all be in how our bras are made!

For those of you who weigh 10, 20, and even 30 pounds more than I do: Rest assured that your calves and probably your thighs are smaller than mine. I am undertall. Think of a six footer who has been cut off at the knees. That’s me and my figure!

I have cankles. I always think that if I had actual ankles, I would be a willowy 5’ 4". What can ya do?

Apropos column in today’s Trib by one of my favorite columnists: [Weight Watchers before Thanksgiving - chicagotribune.com](http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/columnists/ct-talk-brotman-weight-1121-20111121,0,3666426.column) Good thing that group isn’t coming to my house!

I’m not sure what I weighed in college but I do remember bouncing between 135 and 145 in my late 20’s, then getting back down to 135 for my wedding at age 34. Those were the years I was sizes 10 and 12. Weight didn’t really start showing in my face, arms, or lower legs until I was getting up in the 180’s, I think, so if I dressed deceptively and looked in the mirror the right way, I could fool myself. Unfortunately photos didn’t lie. Although cruise photographers do their best, I must say, at making you look how you think you look even if you really don’t!

^^Never been on a cruise. Maybe I should go just for the great photographers!
Anybody else having to buy new bras with weight loss? Never had a big chest, just avg. Now it’s practically nonexistent…too bad we can’t just pick certain areas to lose from.

Packmom,
I have had that happen in the past with weight loss but not so much this time. Although I have only lost 4-5 lbs so it might be coming. When I have experienced it, I found that the girls “bounced back” eventually. LOL.

I was a ballet girl with a ballet mom who put me on my first diet at around age 9. Oh my. I’ve been 5’5" since around age 13 and stayed under 100 pounds until I was 17 when I rebelled and quit dance and gained (gasp!) 20 pounds. My family and basically entire community reacted as if I had become the Goodyear Blimp. Fortunately, I went off to college soon after and was able to live in a world where your entire self worth no longer depended on what you weighed.

At one point – I think I was around 14 – I actually started to grow fur on my arms, one of the cardinal signs of anorexia. Had a friend back then who didn’t make it. She died in hospital, weighed around 65 pounds.

So I come at the whole diet and thinness thing from kind of a distorted perspective. I guess because I was so calorie deprived growing up I don’t seem to drift any higher than my set point range – 122-125. To this day, it feels like a real challenge to eat three full meals in a day. It just feels like an enormous amount of food. I think it was all the early years of calorie deficit.

My DH is upset with his weight and wants to lose and I need to do a better job of supporting him in that. I’m very glad my DD enjoys eating but just stops when she’s had enough and then goes on to focus on other things in life. She’s at a good healthy weight and has never been on a diet.

I know obesity kills people. How can we not know that with the media screaming at us about it? So do eating disorders, though. It’s a fine balance.

I have seen this thread floating out there and never jumped in because I knew I needed to loose weight but did not want to face it. Until a couple of months ago when I went to the doc for a physical and had high cholesterol and high BP. Scared me back onto weight watchers (online). I need to loose a total of about 40 pounds, and am down around 12 so far and a size or two. So that is great! I also hope that loosing the weight will assist with joint issues I have been developing recently so I can avoid surgery on my foot…

Sometimes you just need a good kick in the pants…
