Weight Loss for Dummies

Two excellent posts! ^^^^

Sewhappy, your comments are so worthwhile. So sad to know that people in America literally die from lack of food and lack of an emotional stability about food. :(

Strengthens the message that people need to not be afraid to eat, but to be more choosy about what they eat.

Churchmusic, glad that kick in the pants is working! Sounds like you are on the way to a healthier you!

Many times we look at weight loss in a vanity way - we want to look good, have a smaller size on our pants tag, etc. But truly, it’s much more than that. Our health depends on better eating.

Weigh in day…down 1.3 more pounds. I was surprised since I went out to dinner twice and out to breakfast once…but I was a good dieter otherwise! Also I’ve been working which has cut into my gym time!

I weighed 118 when I graduated from high school. I wore a size 5 or 7 back then. Now I can’t fit into a junior 11 (those sizes have NOT changed). I don’t really want to weigh 118…I’d be happy with 128…and I’m close!

Re: bras…one of my treats to myself in January when I’m hopefull at my goal weight…is going to be a trip to Nordstrom for a bra fitting…and a purchase. A friend of mine says the “foundations” are VERY important!!

Chruchmusicmom, I also got scared by BP issues and started seriously trying to lose weight about four years ago.

I lost 30 pounds or so rather quickly, then hit a plateau. Since this past summer I have been much more serious about it (partly because of the inspiration of this group, where I have been a dedicated lurker…thank you, guys!), and I have lost another 20 pounds or so.

I still have a ways to go, to get to a “normal” body mass index, and still more to be at my “ideal” weight, although who knows whether the latter will ever happen. As a young adult, I weighed barely 110 at 5’3’’, and I haven’t weighed 125 since I was in my late 30s.

I am an “apple,” so I have dropped more pants sizes than shirt sizes. Right now I wear size 14 pants…it was a bit dismaying to read, here, how they are apparently far larger than the old 14s!! My waist is now down to between 36" and 35" inches. I would so love to be able to wear the 30 waist/30 inseam pants I wore in my mid 30s! I’m 64 years old now, and my younger son is still in college!..my two kids were born when I was 38 and 43.

What I have accomplished, so far, has been done by eliminating all dairy, most empty carbs, and sugary drinks. I try to eat a lot of veggies, and I eat a lot of oatmeal and quinoa and sometimes brown rice. I recently learned to cook a millet/cauliflower dish. Raisins and almonds or walnuts are a snack. Ezekiel bread toast with butter is an occasional treat. I do eat more “normal” type food with the family sometimes, or when eating out…but in much, much smaller amounts than previously.

Exercise has been mostly walking, up to an hour a day. I can now jog a mile or more, slowly, which I sometimes do on a cinder track in good weather. Also I have a mini trampoline that I love. I jog on it while watching TV for a minimum of 20 minutes most days, and sometimes for an hour.

I really need to get into weight bearing exercise, which I now understand to be critically important. I have a book, I have some hand weights, and I now know how to do planks. The next frontier!

Best of luck to you, churchmusicmom, and to everyone! Happy Thanksgiving!

^^^Inspiring!

So much to be thankful for on this thread. :)

NJ theatre Mom! congrats, and to all of you working hard to get it right! I think that getting rid of the dairy, the olive oil, yes that too, the oil in our lives and going back to simplicity of fruit, veggies and grains well then it starts to just drop off. Exercise helps the brain! Its what we were made to do; but what we put in our mouths, that is the key to keeping off the pounds. I am going on 65! According to my grandmother, now long gone after 95 years, it doesn’t get any easier. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and to my friends who just didn’t know what to do when I went vegan; well, they are fine now because so am I. We just do what we have to do to stay heathy.

Another lurker here. Thanks for all the inspiration and encouragement! Like others, high blood pressure and awful but honest pictures were a wakeup call. I joined weight watchers online and have lost 25 pounds since mid-August. I stay under their points total and focus on fresh, wholesome food. I tell myself that it’s not that I can’t eat certain things anymore, but simply that I don’t eat them anymore–my choice. I still have at least 30 pounds more to lose, and would like to lose about 45 more to get back to my “young” weight. Overseas: you are so right: we do what we need to do to stay healthy! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. I am grateful for your support.

Marigold, I have found it is just so easy when you just say no!

By the way, I am 64, on cancer medication for the past 5 years that is known to wreck havoc on bp, and 128 pver 75. It was better before the meds and cancer and radiation but my Irish doc says I am doing fine. I am doing major blood work on thanksgiving, and maybe I will be thankful!

OVerseas - that puts it all in perspective. As long as everyone you love is healthy - we have a reason to be thankful.

PackMom - You’re a rail! I hope it’s fun!

Alum, it has been really nice not to have to try on 50 pairs of jeans and still have to settle for a pr. that doesn’t fit well. As I’ve said before…pear shaped still. So upper body is pretty railish…lower body not so much:) Been trying to figure out what the least “damaging” dessert for Thanksgiving would be. Think I’m going to do a pumpkin/cool whip/sugar free pudding thing for me. Maybe something more substantial for the men at my table. Will ponder while walking this a.m. Both S’s are home. Lots to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving y’all.

I’m making an apple pie…I use half of the sugar (sometimes less than that) and only ONE crust which I put on the top. It comes out of the oven looking just like any other apple pie. One small piece of that isn’t going to kill me. On WW, I will really only count the small amount of sugar and the little bit of crust. Not too many points there!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I’d do apple pie too, and then mostly eat the middle:). One spoonful of vanilla ice cream on the side.

My new mantra!

I just added strength exercises last week. I bought an app for that (no, really). I use a routine already established (with movie clips), with a few modifications when I don’t have the equipment called for–I put on my ABBA CD, and I am off!

Really good approach on the apple pie, Alumother…tiny bits of yummy treats. It’s like the way I understand the French to be!

I’m doing my usual Friday weigh in on Thursday morning this week. :)

That’s very smart, ellemenope! :)

Hopped on the scale this morning just to weigh the overweight cat according to the formula
(BB+cat)-BB=cat
Darn cat gained half a pound! And BB was down 2 lb despite eating like a horse and slacking in the exercise department. I’m sure the pounds will be back after this weekend. I might have more pie than initially planned. That cat, however… She ain’t getting anything off our table!

BB…it must be the stages of the moon. I also lost weight this week despite going out to eat THREE times (and yes, I ate the breads and the mashed potatoes).

More veggies for the cat…

LOL - this must be “Cat Weigh-in Week” - my cat has her own Mii on the Wii Fit and I weighed her in yesterday - she’s up a bit but this is good since she’s been too low in recent years (dropped under 8 pounds for a while). What with stones and digestive issues she’s on a prescription diet but will get a few bites of turkey.

I’m cooking T-day dinner for the first time in many years (we’ve been at restaurants with the family). I’m not exactly throwing caution to the winds but am not limiting any dishes due to either Weight Loss for Dummies or their WW points. If there’s any day to splurge, this should be it! I’m going to exercise portion control.

Like you, thumper and BB, I’ve been losing - down 1 1/2 pounds since last Friday - ahead of where I though I’d be so am not too concerned about a temporary gain - we shall see on Friday! DH already wants pancakes during the parade tomorrow morning…

And yes, overall it’s really all about health, isn’t it! I read an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that says you can avoid a triglyceride spike after eating by exercising 12-16 hours ahead of time! So everyone should take a nice 30 minute walk later this afternoon.
