Weight Loss for Dummies

Fascinating about the triglyceride spike. I’m exercising today by running up and down stairs, cleaning and tidying the house. :)

I’m not cooking but my family will be making sure that all the usual foods are available at my relative’s tomorrow. My strategy will be portion control rather than self denial. Besides, all of the overweight relatives in the family will get passive aggressive if they realize I am dieting. I can do without the snide remarks.

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Dummies! I am very grateful to have you here for support, humor, empathy and encouragement.

Now I’m off to make a chocolate cream pie.

I think Thanksgiving dinner can be very balanced. The turkey sure isn’t fattening (unless you are like me and pull of the skin…to eat…yum). A little potatoes and squash are fine…and the green beans. It’s the appetizers and desserts that are the issue. Hopefully my friends will have their usual veggie platter…yum.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Tomorrow, I am going to try to eat only what I love and skip (or push around on my plate) that which is meh. No need to stuff myself; no need to compete for the food. We are eating with friends, so no emotional eating. So grateful that abundance is the problem and not the opposite.

Happy Thanksgiving to my virtual friends! I am looking forward to a wonderful mean - sans turkey for me - roasted veggies, my cranberry sauce, butternut squash soup. a small mound of stuffing (carbs by d****d) - and good conversation. There will be 5 senior citizens at the table tomorrow, from 81 - 91 years old, a Marine who made it home safely from Iraq, a daughter who made it home safely from her first teaching assignment - a lot to be thankful for!

I’ve been absent from this thread for awhile…as I expected I’ve kind of fallen off the “low carb” wagon. I noticed the positive changes in the summertime…I’m ready to hop back on (after this weekend of course!!) BUT - my springtime worries have come true. Fresh fruit, which was my saving grace during that time of year is now iffy. Honestly, I feel like there’s nothing more delish than GOOD FRESH FRUIT - but also nothing worse than bland mealy winter fruit.

How do you all deal with this? What is your winter “go-to” fruit? Tips for buying fruit in the winter?

Winter is citrus time. Clementines, oranges…yum. No grapefruit (thank you to Lipitor for that). I find that grapes are good year round (God knows where they grow them) and I’m a big Granny Smith apple eater.

Costco’s apples have been consistently good, still crisp and juicy. I’m a big fan of clemetines as well.

JustaMom, I’ve been off the wagon in terms of actively trying to lose weight/improve fitness. I’ve been overwhelmed since August with a number of things, work, home, family, and I have not had the time or energy to focus on eating carefully. I have not regained weight - many of the good eating habits I developed on this thread have become second nature - but I have not been tracking or trying to meet a calorie goal.

I also have not managed to get in the exercise habit. I exercise sporadically when I have time.

Maybe I can at least start tracking what I eat again next week?

My favorite fruit this time of year is pomegranates.

One of my friends has already asked me about my strategy for tomorrow. Lots of turkey, salad and green beans; a dollop-ette of stuffing and sweet potato; a sliver of pumpkin pie with a dollop of Cool Whip; a walk with the dog.

I think I can make it a great Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all WLFD! I just have to say one thing: with all the lbs lost, we are no longer Dummies, we are the weight loss Pros

JustaMom5465: Just one word – kiwi!

My wife bought a case of persimmons from Israel last week at the local Korean supermarket and they are very good.

She is also cooking butternut squash which I enjoy.

Bunsen, you bet. Happy Happy to all. I am having a vegan Thanksgiving and saving another turkey. My friend who won a turkey in a raffle a few years ago was horrified when it arrived feathered and gobbling. Her husband is a big environmental bird person and the turkey went to the pen with the other birds and her husband found him a mate and they now have so many little turkeys they don’t know what to do with them. :)

Hmm. Persimmons? I’ve never had one. Maybe I’ll try it. Kiwi, I do like those, they’re pretty fail-proof. You just peel and eat them? Even oranges and clementines can get iffy, nothing like peeling an orange and finding that it’s dry and icky.

I’m okay as far as exercise goes, although I’ve been meaning to get back into some serious strength training. I get plenty of cardio (I think I’ve mentioned before, I am a fitness instructor and teach at least 3 classes each week). I have to say, I noticed a difference in my performance as an instructor when I was eating healthier. So that’s added incentive for me.

Fruit, fruit, fruit. Guess I’ll just start taking chances and buy some different kinds, and see what I like.

(It doesn’t help that our Halloween was “cancelled” because of the winter storm, and all the candy we had stocked up with…well…um…)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Ladies, start your ovens and let the cooking begin!
We can all enter the WLFD confessional tonight when it’s over to see how we did.

Justamom, I’ve had really good luck with fruit at our Super Target. The apples are good. I like the Honeycrisp and the Cameos.
Bartlett pears are still good too. This week I also bought strawberries and blackberries because they were on sale.

My wife called them Fuyu Persimmions - I don’t know if that’s the brand or the name of the persimmon. They have the consistency of an apple but taste more like a peach. They also have a very soft skin and are somewhat dry.

I have an allergy to apples, pears, peaches, kiwi, plums, nectarines - actually the allergy is to the skin but I didn’t have any problems with persimmons. The allergy is mild but it is annoying. In general, I like peeled apples and pears, and, of course, kiwis.

I love Kiwi and used to peel it before eating but it was messy! The easiest way to eat them is to wash the skin, cut it in half and then just scoop with a spoon. Yummy!

Today I weighed in a day ahead (hey, I’m no dummy). Down four ounces from last week. Better than up four, I guess.

See you all tonight for true confessions! You guys keep me honest.

Oh, yeah, and I’m wearing my new sweater dress today that would have incurred the wrath of the lumps and bumps police a year ago :)

Bumping this thread from the couch…post turkey dinner. I showed a good deal of self restraint today although I am sure I consumed more calories than I should have. My stomach is telling me I overdid it. Hopefully the scale won’t tell me the same thing in a few days.

How did everyone else do?

I was about to post an update… Clean up on isle 5! My stupid fat cat jumped and knocked a glass full of red wine over, spilling the contents all over the light colored living room carpet. If you ever do this… One word: Oxiclean. :)

I think the Bunsens did well this Thanksgiving. We ate late breakfast (chanterelle omelet, watermelon slices, greek yogurt and coffee) and skipped lunch. Our dinner was at 4 (turkey, chanterelle stuffing, sweet potatoes, green salad, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, roasted root veggies with quince), and my homemade alpine strawberry pie was our late “supper”. All is good, if one does not count the calories from wine we drank. :)
