Weight Loss for Dummies

back on the wagon for my dh and i. we’ll attempt to be strict. no grains, no dairy, no red meat. it worked before and we’re hopeful it will work again. we’ll have 2 shakes a day and 1 meal. trying to detox our bodies and speed up our metabolism. the holiday season was a little unkind to us. i’m up about 8 pounds and dh was up 25. we’ll press forward now. no more junk food ! I WILL STAY AWAY FROM TORTILLA CHIPS !
best wishes for success to everyone here !

Back from a vacation. I feel slugish and tired. No surprise I ate terribly. The hotel had a delicious real cooked breakfast every morning. I ate pancakes almost everyday. The weird thing is I don’t ever eat pancakes at home.My willpower went totally out the window while on vacation. I am up 2 lbs. I figure some of that is water retention. Or at least I am hoping.
Yesterday went back to my oatmeal. Made a healthy dinner, everyone in the family was happy to be eating fresh, healthy food again. The big realization is that while certain foods can taste good at the time they really aren’t worth it for now your body feels after.

I also picked up some ground flax seed at Whole Foods yesterday. Added a tablespoon to my oatmeal.
Need to get back to at least some simple exercising.
Happy New Year to all and thanks for being such an inspiration to change.

I should have waited until Wednesday to weigh in… Back to the pre-vacation weight. But I was being honest and I weighed more on Tuesday.

mom60-what is the purpose of flax seeds?

Protein and Omega-3.

Greek salad doesn’t need cucumbers. Tomatoes and feta, olive oil, black or green olives, cabbage if you have and forget lettuce. Don’t need that. Goes with the season. Onions if you want. Big chunks of them. Pick them out if you don’t like. But it is a big bowl of cheese and veggies.

Funny I made a greek salad last night and had the leftovers today for lunch. I love cucumber but don’t use lettuce in mine. I dumped it on the leftover quinoa and it was delicious. I make my dressing with lime juice since I have a bunch of lime trees but no lemon. It is still yummy.
Went to the farmers market this afternoon and got fresh cilantro, peppers and tomatoes and green onions. Will make a Mexican stir fry for dinner. I think I will see if I can skip making rice.

Thanks, BC…maybe I should add a tablespoon to my oatmeal…

mom60…so true ! it’s just not worth it to have foods that make your body feel bad.
am feeling much better now that i am eating healthier again.

Happy New Year, fellow Dummies!

I have been pretty stable with a weight gain of maybe a pound. I notice that my weight is tremendously sensitive to salt/fluid retention. If I have Chinese food, even a little, I can be up two or three pounds the next day. I’ve stopped panicking over those fluctuations.

I was on vacation last week and make it to the gym almost every day. I think that was key to keeping the holiday weight at bay.

Went on a 12 mile bike ride today with the new Christmas bike. I’m lucky to live in a city with lots of sunshine and a primo bike trail within biking distance from my front door. It is going to be a GREAT year!

I’m still about a pound up from before our drive out to SD and the NYE dinner. The crepe guy at the Farmer’s Market didn’t help. I did get my Wii Fit set up to work with the rental house TV although I can’t get the sound; I have started every day with my aerobics. Also we have been taking nice cliff walks every day. Hoping to do some biking but the bike I can use is pretty old and rusty so not sure how good it will be.

At the moment I’m back home for two days to fetch the cat so am off schedule again - flying back to SD tomorrow. Fortunately there’s almost no food in the house!

Ellenmope…great job!

I am new to this thread but would love to be a part of the Dummies Community!

I am trying to be more active. I’ve been wearing a pedometer for the past year and it’s been great at helping me track my activity level. My goal is 10,000 steps per day. I’m also biking. Five miles used to be my limit, but the other day, my husband tricked me into doing 12 miles and I was surprised that I did OK. My goal for 2012 is to incorporate stretching and weight training (free weights).

I am trying to eat wholesome foods…whole grains, legumes/beans, fresh veggies/fruit, fish, nuts…and less processed foods. I need to work on portion control.

I have a family history of diabetes and research has shown “Just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a 5-10% reduction in body weight, produced a 58% reduction in diabetes” (ADA website). So, I hope to keep up the activity level and lose 10 lbs before my next physical in March. Wish me luck! :-)

Good luck and sounds like you are off to a great start FresnoMom!

S heads back to college this Sunday - I feel like I’ve been on a cooking/baking streak since he got home Dec. 15! Looking forward to less of the “bad” foods around in a few days…eating will get a little more simple with just 3 of us at home.

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things. I’d suggest tracking calories too with one of the easy-to-use websites. My guess is that people that track do much better than people that don’t track. Weight Watchers is apparently the most successful diet plan out there right now and tracking is part of their approach.

Posted this yesterday on the other wellness thread but I will update my progress here too.

Lost 3.8 lbs this week.

Total loss so far: 11.4

Current weight: 166.4

Did 1 hour of cardio and strength this am. Feeling exceptionally motivated with my recent loss. My goal is a 5k the second week in June. I am rewarding myself for certain milestones in my weight loss journey. Last night I rewarded myself with new pajamas, fuzzy socks, creme blush and body spray. These were two rewards as this week I had two milestones.

My next reward comes at 165.8 lbs and is a new sweater and socks. :)

I have given up all artificial sweeteners. Trying to eat as near to the earth as possible. I am feeling a lot better, Especially my emotions and confidence. I am having new bursts of creative thinking.

Welcome Fresnomom to the community. I found that getting a lighter bike meant that I could bike farther.

Fully enjoyed the 55 degree weather in Ohio today with 2 walks so far and another planned for tonight! Feels so GOOD!

I use daily plate and it does help. I need to get into the habit of daily use. I find I track best when I am on a healthy eating train. I seem to forget to track when I get derailed.
Went on my first walk in weeks. Felt good to be out.

I am ohping to jump back on this thread. have had a good detoxifying week. Husband is on a strict diet and we are eating healthy. do you think it is possible to lose 15 pounds by the summer? Ihave been doing weights and seeing a trainer after a serious illness to regain strength and have been doing well. I lost a lot of weight but found myself gaining as I was able to eat more. and need to take off 20 pounds. I am still markedly down from where i was but do not want to be this weight or higher ever again.
