Weight Loss for Dummies

Weight loss could be acieved only thru balalnce of energy consumed / energy used. As an example, I walked (fast) in NYC for up to over 10 miles for few days of visiting there (I have drained everybody else, they were hurting afterwards)… and I have gained about 3 pounds. How you can miss all these great eating places in NYC? So, while exersice is extremely important in connection to health, it does not always result in weight loss, got to watch those calories.
Frankly, 15lbs is nothing if committed to weight loss. I have lost 20lbs in one month in a past. And contrary to common belief, the way you lost has nothing to do with gaining it back. I did not gain 20 lbs back, I continued loosing. Keep in mind that smaller body requires less calories to maintain weight. If you do not want to gain back, then you absolutely have to consume less after weight loss in comparison to your food intake before weight loss. Otherwise, you will gain it back.

Can I join in? I’ve been on CC for years and, now that thirdboy has finished his college apps, there’s nothing to do but wait. I would LOVE to lose 20 lbs by June, at which time my inlaws are taking dh and me on a lovely trip to Scotland. I had started a successful diet when school started, then we moved and son started the college process and my stress level began to rise…why do i eat whenever someone looks at me cross-eyed? Anyway…since I have loved college pals on CC, I think this community might be the best for the weight loss support as well.

First pledge: ok, FINE, I’ll write the freaking food down… ;)

Welcome SJTH!!! (I like your snarky attitude!) :)

Can I join too?
Determined to get my weight back down. Twice I have lost 25/30 pounds. First time baby 2 weight with Atkins, second eating sensibly/ exercising when I turned 40.

The passed few years I just haven’t looked after myself. H had melanoma, I had a hysterectomy, my father overseas was very sick and I had 3 trips to the UK in as many months. I now feel I am in a better place and motivated to shift the 30 pounds. College freshman DI is settled and loving college. D2 is happy. H is well and my dad is doing great. So, now it is time to focus on me!

I have never recorded my food intake- so I am going to try. Had a look at the daily plate app. I am a bit worried that being post menopausal will slow down the weight loss.

The best thing is to put a plan into action and then celebrate the small victories - every five pounds is a good place.

I gained a couple lbs over the holidays- thats what I get for being related to people who can eat anything & their metabolism just burns it off.

I also ( big dramatic pause) now seem to be in menopause, so I am going to have to take care of that Toot sweet!

I have been slowly building up my stamina at the gym & walking around the neighborhood for a mile or three everyday, so I have confidence I will slowly get there.

If I only had myself to cook for it would be much easier.

^I believe that estrogen in a body increases appetite. Menopause is a plus. Look at very old ladies, many of them look like they lost, not gained.

didn’t have a lot of estrogen anyway- need to increase my intake of soy perhaps.

^Careful, Asians have elevated level of thyroid cancer. Soy is good in reasonable amounts like everything else. One can even over-exercise (easily!!) or over-sleep.

As of yesterday morning I finally got back to where I was before our big trip out to SD and a tiny bit more; new low. It’s very hard to behave out here! We’re seeing what it’s like to live out here so that includes restaurants. But I’m doing my best plus we seem to take some kind of long walk etc every day. Yesterday we climbed all over the tide pools at Cabrillo Now I’ve come down with a cold (I think I picked it up flying back home to get our cat; returned here with her two days later and woke up the next day with the sniffles) so will take it easy. Tomorrow I mean to be back on my Wii Fit, and hopefully more long walks to the cliffs.

^I always get sick when drastically degreasing my calorie intake. I believe that it is inevitable, including pnemonia. Based on my experience, the only safe time to loose good amount of weight is summer.

Welcome new folks. Lol. I am pretty new myself.

Since December 1st I have lost 2 inches off my waist. Ecstatic about this since waist circumference is an indicator of general health. I am still in a danger zone and need to get rid of more inches. I am very happy to have my bmi under 30…just overweight instead of obese.

I think a lot of people don’t realise they are obese or are even aware what their bmi is…or even what bmi is. This is something I wish weight watchers would emphasize. They make no mention of bmi or waist measurement. I educated my Aunt and friends at weight watchers last Thursday regarding bmi. Two of them were shocked their weight has them classified as obese.

So, I am just plugging along. Did 80 minutes of high intensity cardio yesterday. Plan on getting in 45 min tonight. Doing a “the firm” dvd. It is great!

I don’t believe in drastically decreasing calories. My goal a year ago was to reduce my calories enough so that I could find a level of eating that would make me happy forever while maintaining a weight I’m reasonably happy with. As I get smaller eventually the calories that would let me lose weight will only have me maintaining it. It took me a year to lose 20 pounds, but that’s okay, because I was never hungry, I got to eat waffles every Saturday, drink wine on the weekends, and I went out for BBQ whenever dh felt like it.

Mathmom- I 100% agree with your approach. It is the approach I took as well. In two years I am down 35 lbs. I could lose more but at this point I am about maintaining within a couple of lbs of where I am now. If I lose 10 more I would be happy but if not I am at a healthy weight. H asnd I go out for lunch every friday, I eat what I like. I would like to get stronger.
Mspearl- I carry much of my weight around my middle. It has been the biggest battle losing those waist inches. The hip inches came off pretty easily but I find carbs go right to my waistline.
Marilyn- glad your getting out in the sunshine. So far January is proving to have some very nice weather.
Welcome everyone
Regarding tracking- D and I just came back from Costco. I never track the samples. I bet they can add up.

I set up the tracking on myplate on the livestrong website. Really easy and they even had my british cereal listed: )

mspearl- the waistline is my issue too! I am tall, and was slender till my mid 30’s, Weight gain probably coincides with moving to the US. … bigger portions, cheaper to eat out and lots more driving!

I find my hardest part of the day is from 4PM till we eat dinner. I am really ready to eat by 5, but no one else is home. I try to drink lots of water, but it is hard not to nibble especially when you are preparing dinner. Any suggestions to overcome this?

Gibson- that is the time I try to go for a walk. A couple of snacks that work for me- cut up celery and cucumber, hard boiled egg, a couple of dark chocolate almonds, or even better 7 raw unsalted almonds. Sometimes I will also make a cup of coffee. Granted I drink my coffee black with no sugar.

^Careful, Asians have elevated level of thyroid cancer

I’m actually Heinz 57. My sister has traced our family back to the 1400’s and virtually all are English, Germans from Russia or Dutch.( with some Scots-Irish, French Huguenots & Swedish for good measure) The women tend to get heart disease, the men colon cancer.
The warning is appreciated though.

I am impressed, mspearl…cardio is one area where I’m working to improve.

Gibson, I have the same problem. I solve the problem by scheduling a snack for 4:30-5:00 pm. If you schedule a specific snack, you won’t overeat. I often have 15 almonds.

^I have a snack at four o’clock. Often 1/2 a cup of yogurt with fruit and a little granola, or carrot sticks with hummus, or half a banana with peanut butter. We generally don’t eat dinner till 7:30 pm. It’s just too long a wait.

Marilyn- would you mind sharing what you do with the Wii Fit. The kids have a Wii, we have a Wii fit. No one uses it. I would need one of the kids to help me figure out how to use it.
