Weight Loss for Dummies

I do the same thing as mathmom does - I eat a cup of yogurt before hitting the road after work. We often don’t eat dinner until 8 pm, so the snack keeps me going during my evening commute and through my evening exercise. DH usually has an apple or some other fruit around 5 pm.

Elevated incidence of thyroid cancer in Asians is most likely linked to the nukes, and not soy, although soy is not completely in the clear when it comes to its estrogen-like effects.

Does anyone truly hate organized exercise as much as me? Have you any success stories of taking 15 minute walks or anything like that? In our move I found…oh…10 pedometers. I probably would do well going for 10,000 steps. I wonder which box they’re in…

And I really like the My Fitness Pal app for entering data.

You have to find what works for you. Some like competitive sports whether individual or group. Some like solo activities. Some like group non-competitive. My wife goes out for walks in the morning for an hour. She sees the neighborhood, chats with neighbors (usually older people that are retired) and she probably knows who has which dog and when they walk them.

Some people like music when they walk and I imagine that you could have a phone conversation on your walk with the appropriate technology.

We drive cars and it takes effort and time but it’s a necessary part of life. I think that exercise is a necessary part of life too.

I like to listen on my iPod to either a book on tape or a podcast that I’ve downloaded. I have a daily podcast that lasts about 40 minutes an episode. It helps to keep me out there for 40 minutes every weekday.

I walk on my own and climb stairs and I changed to being a vegan over 4 months ago and going strong. Losing weight, feeling great, a new lease on living. No matter the ups and downs, I am alive and that is everything. To be alive.

I’ve never been able to handle a health club. Hated the whole routine of having to get there, change, exercise, shower, change back, etc. More time not exercising than exercising.

But I’ve been doing 20 minutes of aerobics on my Wii Fit every morning and believe it really has been beneficial. I don’t even have to go downstairs and can exercise in my jammies. If I can find an interesting walk, I might do a half hour or so, but not just for the sake of walking (our neighborhood back home is same old same old so is too boring, but here in San Diego it’s fabulous).

I actually love going to the gym…but that is easy for me to say because I haven’t BEEN there for 7 weeks! I swore I was going to go this week…maybe tomorrow. I have resumed yoga.

Down 1.8 pounds this week.

^I am going to gym every day and I love it also. We are going for a walk outside afterwards. I love being outside even when it is raining. Cannot do yoga, it increases my vertigo, strangely heard it from several people. Anyway, when I was doing it, my chiro even commented that 3 hrs/day is excessive, no need for that.

I enjoy the gym. I work with a PT once a week and it has beens so helpful. I am looking to change my lifestyle not a diet.
I lost weight being non weight bearing, bedridden and basically starving from an inability to process food. So my metabolism is low form losing muscle mass, also meds I am and chemopause. So my first order of the day has been to improve strength/muscle mass which has improved metabolism. I eat 3 meals and two snacks. That hour mis afternoon is killer for me too.
My H lost 20 pounds through working out and slightly altering his diet. Now he is on a rather austere diet to lose the remaining 8 pounds, and particualrly his gut. i think it is more like south beach. I need my carbs but am eating good carbs, and whole grains etc…
today I worked out with trainer, and did 30 mins of cardio. The did multiple errands.
Tomorrow i am going to do a ball workout with a friend. I enjoy working out on a ball, i find it doesnt hurt as much as being on the floor and it is fun. has anybody tried this?

I’ve lost 35 lbs. since April 1st and dropped my BMI by five percentage points. I found keeping a food journal made me really accountable and showed me exactly where the problems were – when I leave work/get home is a killer time for me, too. I often stopped off for fast food on the way home since DH doesn’t get home until 9:30-10:00. That’s when we generally have dinner. Not good for either of us – but I have to take my chemo with a big meal, and I do that after dinner so I can sleep off the worst side effects.

So, first I quit the fast food (15 lbs right off the bat), and then I focused on eating better, though not necessarily less. Coincidentally, I also switched to a new chemo drug that requires I fast for two hours before and one hour after taking it (and I take it twice daily), so there is another layer of discipline there that has helped me. Like mathmom and others, I want a plan I can live with over the long haul. There are too many health issues in my family (diabetes, high BP, catastrophic bone fractures, knee replacements, etc.) for me to keep on self-destructing with food.

Found a picture of myself yesterday in my desk at work, taken 18 months ago. What a jolt of reality!

A combination of chemotherapy and menopause, DTE? I can’t even imagine such a double whammy!

Countingdown, wow. Agree with Ellemenope. Good for you taking such positive steps with chemo added!

Chemopause is the word we lovingly (not) refer to the abrupt menopause chemotherapy puts you in. This can be temporary if you are younger or if near menopause permanant.
the tamoxifen makes you gain weight and harder to lose weight but I am determined to do so. CD great work on the weight loss, is the new med easier on you?

Thanks for the explanation.

Wow! I am in awe of those of you who are tackling chemopause with such humor and determination. It is a reminder for those of us who sometimes whine over minor things!

I have been holding my own weight wise. I have crept up a pound or two a couple of times in recent weeks, but I have immediately taken stock and have returned to target weight by watching portion size and sticking to really nutritious food.

My biggest downfall is stress eating. My diet is usually very good, but when I get stressed out I gravitate towards my favorite comfort foods or grabbing a coke for a boost of energy. I will not resume my diet coke habit no matter how stressed I get - I decided that was just a can of chemicals.

My stress fracture is entirely healed and so I am back on track with racewalking. I am surprised at how long it has taken to be comfortable doing four miles/day again. It just goes to show how quickly we lose fitness. Fortunately, the weather has been so mild it has been easy to hit the road in the morning.

Stress eating is my downfall as well. I do much better if I can keep my hands busy…and my favorite treats out of the house, but still feeding enormous boys leaves a lot of deliciousness around, sigh. Keeping on track this week, though. One day at a time, right?

I find having foods that I cant control out of sight. Also I tend to try to fight my “bad” habits. So while it is good to find distraction, I have to find things to eat while stressed, or foods that fill me up so that I dont want to eat. I make a energy snack with honey, chex, protein powder, and peanut butter, it gives me the energy and I eat a small amount. I have this urge to want something after dinner no matter how many times I tell myself no , I am full etc… so I finally gave up and eat a stoneyfield chocolate yogurt, it satisfies me, I plan it in, its chocolate, has D3 and good bacteria. I sometimes add some almonds. Works for me. I must reiterate doing abs on the ball_awesome

also yay to holding it within a couple of pounds thats how you keep it off right?

worknprogress- I also gave up Diet Coke. It was just too hard on my stomach, though I did love a diet coke mid afternoon. I have switched to diet Lipton Green tea. I am hoping no one tells me that it is bad for me!

I don’t feel like heading out for my brisk walk. It is 67 degrees so I don’t have that excuse. I have a few more hours of daylight so I will see if guilt wins the battle.

Regarding tea- I drink a lot of black tea. I drink it unsweet. Should I be looking at green, white or any of the other number of teas that seem to be popping up at the grocery store?
