Hi archiemom–Mom60, my dh knows I’m doing this, but he wouldn’t dream of saying anything. He DOES ask “how many lbs WE’re down” occasionally and I want to hurt him. Gibson, that is so awesome–I was feeling happy with my 7, but the double digits sound so great! I have both cupcakes AND Girl Scout cookies in my house, and I have stayed strong so far. I am going to fix a steak dinner tomorrow night for H and son and I’m having some too. BUT I’ll have a yam while they have baked potatoes and all the butter etc.

Bumping us up.
Valentine’s Day- S bought his GF a lb of See’s candy. My H jokingly accused S of making him look bad. I told my H in a strong voice that he should absolutely NOT bring a large box of chocolate into the house.
I am holding steady which is frustrating since I am back on track with my eating. I need to ramp up the exercise. I have not played tennis for almost 2 months while trying to get a bad case of tennis elbow to settle down. I don’t belong to a gym but am considering giving it a try. I have not belonged to a gym since my kids were little. Back in the day when you went to aerobics class in a leotard.

Ooo, tennis elbow is BAD…I’ve had it a couple of times in my life. It’s never been caused by playing tennis (but by yardwork and crocheting), but it really hurts to play. Unfortunately, nothing worked for me except for not playing tennis, for a LONG time.

I feel for you, Mom60!

H gave me one See’s chocolate lollipop for Valentine’s Day…instead of a box of chocolates. It is nice to have someone supportive when you’re making lifestyle changes.

But he made one comment: Why do people lavish so much praise on someone who has lost a lot of weight and don’t say anything to the person who has eaten moderately all his life and has always maintained a healthy weight? (You can guess which category the two of us fall into.)

There needs to be a new parable for The Prodigal Son’s Brother, LOL.

My tennis elbow came from carrying my heavy grocery bags to my car instead of using the cart. I have a brand new tennis racket that H bought me for Hannukah that I haven’t had a chance to use yet.
My H falls into the same category as yours.

What’s the make and model?

What is See’s candy? Also saw it mentioned Valentine’s day thread.

Tennis elbow- sounds painful. I guess aleve will be your new best friend.

D taking me for Thai food tonight. I usually have a Masaman curry- but will be searching the menu for lighter options. I would LOVE a glass of wine, but really should resist. We are out for dinner with Friends on Fri night and then visiting D1 at college over the weekend which will include a nice dinner on Sat night and then brunch on Sunday. It is relatively easy to control the calories at home, but when you go out- geez!

You see them in Southern California malls and airports. Love their chocolate!

Happy post Valentines, back-on-track day, everyone!

We went on a two hour hike in Torrey Pines yesterday which included lots of stairs and inclines. Then we went out for a great dinner at George’s in La Jolla and weight is slightly up again. Although not quite as far up as a couple of weeks ago. Can’t imagine what I would be without the walking!

Exercise Thursday! Let’s get on it!

tgif! Have a nice weekend everyone!

Hey, we’re on page 3!!!

Okay. So ALL of the holidays are over until Easter (unless you count St. Patrick’s day and I don’t). It’s a good time to recommit and get back on track if we’ve been slipping. I know I have been a bit careless and want to get my momentum back as we head into spring.

I think I will start tracking calories this week. I have been reluctant to do it simply because it’s so tedious. Any suggestions from those that manage it are very welcome!

EPTR- have you tried Daily Plate on Livestrong?
I am getting back on my exercise track and trying to get more vegetables into our daily diet. I am headed to the farmers market later today.
Played a small amount of tennis yesterday afternoon to try out the racket. The elbow wasn’t great. I could handle the ground strokes but could not serve.

Keeping track of calories: It works for me. I weigh my food, which can make the calculations easier. I also keep track online at MyPlate (livestrong.com)–great graphics that help you keep on track for the day.

Some modifications that I do that help with the tediousness of it–

I have a couple of set breakfasts–oatmeal with fruit or cheerios with milk. I know the calorie count of each breakfast.

I have a handful of snacks of which I already know the calorie count–25 pistachios or 15 almonds, etc.

I don’t bother weighing most vegetables. I found that it wasn’t worth my time. That doesn’t count for things like rice, potatoes and beans, for example. But I will eat all the green beans and broccoli I want without counting them.

I don’t count calories on a salad unless I use a non lite or non fat free salad dressing.

^^I have never had a weight problem (partly good genes, partly eating right from childhood…thanks, Mom!) But I do limit my intake of carbs (almost no sugar), sensible on the meat & fats, and eat all the veggies I want!

It would not make sense to count or limit broccoli, cabbage, greens, and so forth. That’s why the new Weight Watchers plan makes more sense to me (from what I’ve heard of it.) I still think they shouldn’t market WW dessserts to dieters. People need to get out of the habit of eating desserts, and if it doesn’t have sugar or fat, then it’s full of chemicals and STILL isn’t food fit for anyone.

You may have all the veggies you want, though! :)

I also have been using the my plate food tracker. Really easy to use.

Spent the weekend with D1 in her college town. Great to see her and her friends. Happy to stand on the scales and I didn’t do much damage. Down .5 pound from last Monday. I took a special K bar to the gym meet and while my family was munching in to popcorn, I had that and a bottle of water. I did have some wine with dinner and it was delicious. OK - I admit, I indulged and had 3 glasses over the weekend. We ate at one of the best restaurants in the area. I skipped the bread and dessert, but ordered the entree I wanted. Like most great restaurants, the portions were not huge and it was fabulous.

Off to Curves!

I am completely stagnating, and need to get aggressive this week or I’ll be depressed. I’m playing with my 7 yo niece today, so that should be energetic! I am motivated, but discouraged. Took an hour long fast walk yesterday before entertaining friends for dinner and did have the chocolate dessert, because the friend made it and I can’t be rude…and it was delicious! And I use Myfitnesspal.com for calorie counting etc. and find it really easy.

Thanks for getting the board going again…I was lonely! ;)

SJTH,
We’ll stick together! I’m stagnating a bit too. Having a bad week. Somehow I either hurt my upper back or have a cold in it or something because it is killing me and the idea of exercise is frightening. Then today I was putting together a piece of furniture from Ikea and pulled something in my lower back! It was in spasms. I’m so afraid of losing my newly acquired semi-fitness.

I’m still checking in here regularly - this thread is still the motivating factor for me (well, this and my Wii Fit). Still just maintaining and I know exactly why - I’m nowhere close to eating how I did before I started this regime last June, but distinctly more than I did before we came out to California. Is it my fault that they sell lemon crepes at the farmer’s market in La Jolla? And were we really kidding ourselves that a frozen banana on Mission Beach made a sort of healthy lunch? If it wasn’t for all the walking - I know I won’t keep that up when we get back to Illinois because we don’t have an ocean with a beach! Lake Michigan really isn’t the same plus it’s a long drive in from the suburbs. So I’ll go back to how I was eating June to December and hope that works again. Or - maybe I’m converting fat to muscle with all the walking. ;)
