Weight Loss for Dummies

Congrats gibson!!! What diet approach did you use??? I am sloooooooowly losing, though it bounces up and down within 2 lbs. Hit a low today but still am not quite half way to my goal. But like gobson, my BMI is in the nl range (24.53).

Congrats, Gibson!! I’m down to my last 3 pounds to goal and I’m finding those last 3 pounds are a bear…

Maybe I’m just not ready to move on to maintenance…

Am looking for a tailor to take in my clothes in a month or so… That should be less expensive than buying new, at least. And I have much more to lose, so no big investments just yet!

Snowflake, it took me about 3 weeks to adjust to the ketosis, i.e. burning ketones for fuel instead of glucose from food intake. It feels yucky for many: headaches, nausea, dizziness…
You should really read the New Atkins book- explains it all better than I can.
It is a period some refer to as the “lo-carb flu.”
p.s. I have lost over 4 inches from my waist in 7 weeks- it does work!

Weighing in

Down 1.2 pounds this week, for a total of 16.4 pounds in 11 weeks. I’m happy with that! I could wear my smaller shorts and shirt to the Y class this morning. I did the step class. That is meant for coordinated people, a group which does not include me! I just do the best I can and sweat like a pig.

Congratulations to Gibson and jym for being in normal range! I have 5.6 pounds to go to that point.

Everyone is doing so well! Congrats!! For those of you doing lo carb, what do you eat?? Can you give a sample of foods on your weekly consumption list?

Well, NOT low carb, but the Blue Diamond nut chips (with brown rice) are really fitting the bill for my chip/salt need–AND 15 chips are 140 calories. I am packaging them in ziplocks in portion size, and they’re perfect for an afternoon treat!

jym-
For breakfast I have a protein shake made with unsweetened almond milk and whey protein powder, plain nonfat greek yogurt sweetened with crystal light mix or 2 scrambled eggs with salsa. Lunch is usually broccoli and a sirloin patty with low sugar ketchup or a green salad with grilled chicken or canned salmon and 2 measured Tablespoons of a full fat dressing. For dinner, I have whatever I am making for the family but with modifications. Tonight it is Mexican food. I am skipping the rice and beans. I will have a serving of the grilled chicken fajitas with red and yellow peppers and onions topped with guocomole, salsa and low fat sour cream, but no tortilla. Last night we all had grilled shrimp Caesars. Tomorrow is fish poached in a tomatoe broth with sauteed spinach. I’ll skip the couscous I serve the family. My go to snacks are hard boiled eggs and a low fat string cheese stick wrapped in a piece of deli ham or turkey and nuked for about 20 seconds, which really helps the rubbery taste of the cheese. Sometimes I’ll have nuts, but I have trouble there with portion control.

My lo-carb basics:
eggs
cheese
nuts
yogurt
berries
meat
fish
veggies
tea or coffee
WAAAAATER

I make smoothies with yogurt and berries. I snack on nuts and baby-bels.
I love salads, so many possibilities, with many different ingredients.
I make stir-fries often.
And eggs any which way!
Dinner is often a roasted meat or fish with steamed veggies.
I love soup, but most of the store-bought ones have some type of starch in them…

I ordered that New Atkins book yesterday, and I will read if from end-to-end as I always do when I go on these kicks. My low carb list is too short, so I also ordered the other New Atkins recipe book to go with it.

Short list of low carb things:
Water with every meal instead of any calorie-laden beverage (no OJ, no soda, no wine)

Breakfast:
Omelet with tomatoes and spinich or
Greek yogurt smoothie (1/2 cup of greek yogurt, 1 cup of frozen fruit, 1/2 cup of low fat milk and if you need more protein, a scoop of whey protein powder)

Lunch:
Salad with lots of veggies and topped with your favorite grilled meat (pork, chicken, salman, etc.) and with a dressing that has to added sugar.

Dinner:
Grilled meat marinated with non-sugar marinade (salmon, tuna, fish, pork, chicken, lean beef…)
Grilled or steamed broccoli or other yummy vegetables, the fresher the better.
Side salad of raw veggies/lettuce/onions w/ non-sugary dressing (Makato’s Ginger is my favorite and only has 2g of carbs, but it makes a boring salad taste amazing.)

I haven’t figured out what to do for small snacks … hopefully some of you have ideas besides nuts and cheese w/ carrots.

Aren’t here Atkins and South Miami Beach diet meals you can get in the freezer section of the grocery store? I’d be tempted just to buy them…although I think that I could do what the previous 3 posters are doing without too much trouble!

(Well, I’m not really a smoothie person…I like to chew my food.)

That’s it performersmom … you’re coming to live with me. I cross posted you and we seem to eat similarly. If we were guys we’d have a bro-mance.

And you’re coming to live with me too, LMNOP and laketime. I’m really good at cleaning up, but not so great about cooking – AND, LMNOP, we can watch AI together while eating healthy.

(p.s. yes, the ketosis is getting to me)

So, why not a sis-fest!

Here’s to that! (with my current glass of wa-wa)

Maybe yes, maybe no. I took in three garments to a local place - not a fancy tailor but a clothes and shoe repair place in a strip mall that I’ve used before. The dress was $28 but then the back of the neck gaped and it cost another $7 and it still is a little funny. So $35 to take in a dress that I like but still isn’t great. The skort cost $22 to do; I was just at Kohl’s and used my 30% coupon to get 2 skorts, final price each was $24.50. (My old skort was green and I used to wear it as an outfit with a sleeveless top and lightweight shirt so am thrilled to have it all together again.) The third item was a sleeveless blouse which cost $12 to take in. The skort and the blouse do fit really nice.

I had the tailoring done as an experiment to see how well it would work and what it would cost. Basically I’ve decided that I have very few old clothes that are worth the cost - most of them were fairly inexpensive in the first place and would have to basically be taken apart and resewn. (I did go down about three sizes so the fit of the old clothes is way off.)

I also took in an old skirt myself and I really don’t sew clothes. It had a simple waistband, no lining, and a side zipper. I found advice online on making a dart in the back and now it fits again! This skirt is actually the right size now but it had stretched out over the years so bringing in the waist is just what it needed.

Lo carb - put me on the water-eggs-cheese bandwagon. I did try adding nuts but have discovered that I get a rash/hives sort of thing on my neck when I eat a lot of nuts, especially almonds. Go figure - took me ages to connect it up.

All you ketosis followers could probably get some good advice on the other serious health thread - I think there’s been discussion on the topic and they seem to know lots of science!

Marilyn, glad you found some new clothes but sorry you had to pay fitting fees that didn’t work out. Nothing like a great skort!

I got a message back from livestrong that they are aware of the problem with the graphs on their site. So thats good. The graphs are working fine today, and my BMI is 24.44! I lost another 1/2 lb, despite having a mushroom crepe and a small bit of hazelnut/chocolate gelato last night (yummmmm treat after a walk). I am half way to goal!

Thanks for all the low carb suggestions. I am not a yogurt eater but can do cheese, eggs, fish and veggies. In fact I already eat that. Not a big red meat eater, though will on occasion.

We are all doing great!! Way to go, ladies!

Next week is DS’s graduation. Will probably give myself a bit of a break. Hope it doesnt do too much damage.

jym … you are doing great! I hope you build up some reserves so you can relax a little on graduation weekend.

Thanks, snowflakevt. Its been 6 1/2 weeks and I am down about 9 1/2 - 10 lbs! Once we get our head in the game its easier to get back on track after a few breaks. The good news is I no longer avoid the scale, I look forward to getting on it!

Doesn’t sunny weather help too? We’re finally getting an entirely nice week, and everything seems more possible. Fitnesspal told me my potential weight in 5 weeks, which is when we leave for Scotland, approx., if I keep on at the current pace, so THAT was a motivator too!

I am so impressed with everyone’s progress–very inspirational, so thanks!

Normal range! It’s all good!!!

(Upside to weight loss: now when the news has all these reports about the obesity crisis, etc., I can actually watch without feeling guilty. Props to all those on this thread who are trying to “not contribute to the problem” also!)
