Weight Loss for Dummies

CD!!! It is SOOOO wonderful to see you here!!! You have been in the thoughts and prayers of many. So very, very glad you are doing so well and on the mend. Waiting to hear about graduations, weddings and all good things.

Ran farther today without feeling so whupped. It’s coming very slowly but progress is being made…I can fit into almost all the clothes in my closet, which expands the wardrobe nicely.
Rewarding myself with one gin and diet tonic.

Congrats, MaineLonghorn! The first 10% and the last 10% are the hardest.

Counting Down, can’t believe your story! I haven’t had any health problems (yet), although I am sure it is because I just refuse to look (although I do measure my blood sugar every couple of weeks myself with my little kit). All WLFDs are here to cheer you on to normal BMI!

Light exercise, jym–hmmm–you could do some strength training and core exercises to supplement your walking and bike riding. You don’t need much equipment–a pair of light dumbbells and a balance ball. Once you lose some more weight, you may want to try a little running again.

Supposedly, weight training engages the large muscles and causes your body to burn more calories long after the exercises are done. I’m all for my body burning calories while I’m not exercising!

Thanks, ellemenope. I have some 2 and 5 lb weights in a bathroom drawer. I guess I should take them out :)

Jym- Have you thought of Curves? Designed for women. I really enjoy the circuit and have muscles where I have never had muscles. 30- 40 mins and you are done. I go at least 4 times a week. I was weighed and measured when I joined in Feb. I have lost a total of 21.5 inches to date. I don’t attribute all the weight loss to Curves but I do think it has helped. They are running a month free special just now to celebrate " national Curves day"

CD- Thanks for the reminder and happy to hear of the positive outcome.

Dragon mom- Enjoy the G & T. You deserve it. I love a good glass of chardonnay!

I belong to LA Fitness. I have a friend that manages a local Curves but I really dont want to join another facility…

My D, home for the summer, wants us to try Zumba. I can’t dance worth a lick!

How does one learn the stuff before trying to join a class where everyone looks like they know what they are doing?

BTW down a pound today! BMI is 23.9!

Oooh, I love the little scale fluctuations. Rechecked it this morning and it showed an additional 1/2 lb. Not sure if its right, but I’ll take it! Weight down 13 lbs. BMI recalculated at 23.82!! Booyah!!

OK, 2 donuts yesterday were only about .5 lbs loss. Oh, well, I will try harder tomorrow. No donuts today, very dissapointed.

In my opinion, developing healthy eating habits should be part of EVERY diet. And eating junk food should be done in moderation:)

I’m still the same weight…goal.

Yesterday was my one year anniversary on this thread - the best thing I’ve done for myself in 25 years. I’ve reported on milestones but here’s a recap:

Weight dropped 48.5 pounds from 208.1 to 159.6

 • DH says think of percentages so by quarter - 1st: 16.5 pounds, 7.9% for quarter. 2nd - 15.5 pounds, 8.1% for quarter. 3rd: 9.0 pounds, 5% for quarter. 4th: 7.5 pounds, 4.5% for quarter. Overall - 23.3%. So even though I felt like I was just maintaining in recent months, I continued to drop.

BMI (according to my Wii fit) dropped from 32.66 to 25.05

Went from obese (again, per the Wii fit) to thisclose to normal (just half a pound more)

Sizes - from 20W to 14, 1X to L, 40DD to 38D. Now I enjoy shopping! There are about five large bags of clothes in the garage to give away.

General health - stopped two of four daily medications, overall stamina vastly increased.

Goals - met first goal to fit my “temperature dress” months ago; new goals of under 160 (met), normal weight per the Wii (almost there), drop total of 50 pounds (hopefully by end of month). I didn’t start with any numerical goals because I had no idea how I would do.

How I did it: portion control, exercise, self control. I never counted calories but already was very aware of carbs from having diabetes II for many years. I ate way less and less often. I paid attention to carbs and fats (such as only eating half the bun; only having 3oz of (dry) pasta as a serving, etc.). I started drinking a lot of water every day and essentially gave up Diet Coke (used to have a glass a day; this part impressed DH almost as much as the weight loss). I start every day with 20 minutes of light aerobics on the Wii Fit; not much other exercise except when we travel.

I did not totally give up anything I love and did not start eating anything I dislike. I added more eggs to my diet and eat a lot of cheese. I have tiny treats of sweets - this is where I tend to slip, especially on weekends. I don’t drink often but seldom have more than one drink when I do.

I’m about 15 pounds above my young adult weight so hope to continue to sloooooooowly drop back down over time. The Wii fit step aerobics seemed to have really helped my rear and thighs; I need to work on my tummy and arms. There’s some loose flesh hanging around various places but nothing too odd looking.

Now I say I’m on a weight loss lifestyle - not a diet, not a program, but a new way of living. And we’re no dummies!

WOW!!! Congratulations, Marilyn and happy aniversary!!! What a story, and what an inspiration!!

what jym626 said!  :)

Marilyn- that’s excellent. Congratulations!

Marilyn - If you’re not careful we will have to start a new thread for you - weight loss for miss smarty pants (slim pants, that is)!

Terrific Marilyn!!!

Hooray ! You are an inspiration to those us who came late to the party.

Thank you all! We went to a free village concert tonight with a band that recreated the late 50’s and early 60’s. I got up and did the twist again like I did last summer - 40+ years ago, that is. I couldn’t have done it last summer! Now I can do the mash potato and I can do the twist. I like it like this!

Marilyn, that’s fabulous!
