Weight Loss for Dummies

We have a couple of people around here who practice racewalking. It IS entertaining. ;)

Thanks for the salad, mom60. It’s still sort of summer here and I’m looking for ideas for dinner that don’t require cooking.

Thanks, mom60. I’d already swapped out my usual piece of toast (or two) for an egg (:frowning: --nobody loves toast more than I do!). Thanks to your recommendations, I’ve had chicken for lunch the past few days and will continue to try to move my more substantial foods earlier in the day. I’m also keeping more nuts in the house (okay–not referring to my kids here). I’ve read that “try to eat foods your grandmother would recognize as food” advice and that seems like a good idea. I’m continuing my nightly glass of wine, but probably making it a bit smaller.

FWIW, MyPlate seems to think I’m doing well–at least I’ve been below their alloted daily calories every day. Still wrestling with the “hopping on the scale” decision. . .

Here’s a day in the life of eating to stay on your goal weight.
Morning
Two cups of tea with milk
One piece La Brea Whole Grain with Justin’s Chocolate Almond Butter
Fish Oil
Probiotics

Morning Snack
20 almonds

Lunch
Poached salmon on sauteed broccoli and soba noodles (restaurant)

Dinner
Breast of chicken
Large salad with homemade oil, vinegar, mustard dressing
Microwaved whole wheat tortilla
2 squares milk chocolate 2 squares very dark chocolate
1 glass good red wine
12 organic red grapes

Just one person’s approach. I’ve been eating like this for 15 years now. Had to reduce volume some as I aged, but a recent switch to 2 30 minutes walks 4-5 times/week opened the door back up to daily chocolate.

The thing is, I do not feel deprived AT ALL on a day like that. It’s a very doable long term eating approach.

Weight: 122 Height: 5’ 5"

When I was going to start the Couch to 5K I assumed (I don’t know why…) that I’d have to do it nightly - how great that that is not true! And yes, I wouldn’t hesitate to take longer to complete it. The first two nights it was close to dark when I got outside to try it and I didn’t want to go far or long so I just did part of a workout - just to try it, build confidence and ease my mind. I think I can have no problem with the first week. But I also won’t hesitate to take longer than a week to complete a “week” if I need to.

My 15 year old D downloaded it on her iTouch too - so we are going to do much of it together - funny, we don’t exactly go side by side, but so funny to see her slightly ahead of me, but stopping/starting at EXACT same time as the app tells us to switch modes!!

I CAN DO THIS!!! :)

Good for you abasket! I think I’ll be a few weeks behind you. (I’m going to give myself a bit of a break after the P90X is finished.) I can tell you from my brief flirtation with jogging last spring that it’s actually a bad thing to go at it every day when you start out. I did get that awful knee tendonitis thing that sidelined me for 2+ weeks and while I was out I googled “beginning running tips” or something. They all said to take it easy early on–certainly not every day. So feel good about taking those days off in between. You’re helping your body get adjusted.

abasket - Go you!

Couch to 5K is 3 times a week, if memory serves. It was a comfortable pace. At the beginning of the week, I would commit to which days I would do it. (The “I’ll do it when I have a free moment during the week” plan didn’t work out.)

Isn’t P90X pretty intense? Does it really change body shape? Inquiring minds want to know.

P90X is very, very intense - as in throw-up after workout intensive. Though they do have a stretching routine that’s probably not intense. I was thinking of doing that this afternoon though it does look very nice outside for running.

You were planning on throwing up?

;)

Well being the one who doesn’t own a scale, I definitely haven’t done any body measurements. Like most things in life, it’s as intense as you want to make it. I modify the moves often, take breaks when I need to. I’m definitely stronger/better at the exercises than I was at the beginning.

In some ways the toughest part is making the commitment (i.e., finding the time) to do it every day. The shortest days are an hour; most are an hour and a quarter; the yoga routine is 90 minutes. I’m sure this has been good for me in many ways (when was the last time most sedentary fiftysomethings jumped?). I must say I’ve been complaining a little lately about being tired of being sore. Some body part or other has hurt for 10 weeks now.

I like the variety and will be quite proud of myself when it’s over.

(If anyone wants a synopsis, for most weeks, days 1, 3, and 5 are weights for specific body parts + abs; days 2, 4, and 6 will be something like plyometrics, yoga, or kenpo; day 7 is rest or an hour of stretching. All very doable in a small space. The full set of CDs comes with bands that can sub for dumbbells. I have bought one set of those–had other weights already. I also already had a yoga mat.)

Elle - love the 5k to couch!!!

I don’t care if my scale matches my docs. What I am really interested in is my weight on my scale. It is the fluctuating that matters most to me. I know the number on my scale that is best for me (and reinforced by how my jeans fit, how my waist feels, etc.). So I am really just watching for upward drifting.

I am usually two pounds heavier at the docs. Must be a variation of “white coat” syndrome.

I am SO impressed by all of the Couch to 5K and PX90 folks here!! Just WOW! I can not even fathom having the endurance for those workouts. Kudos to all of you.

Sticking at my weight goal for a month now (actually a couple below now), but something has got to change in my maintenance. I had to walk the school parking lot twice today to help my 17yo find his parking space after paying for his pkg pass (2,800 students so pretty large). My heart was pounding so hard, cold sweat, seeing stars, and the black fuzz I get around the edge of my vision just before I pass out. Dehydrated? Not enough protein? Low on Carbs? Low blood sugar? Could be any of these, but the first thing I’m having checked is my thyroid. Last check was pre weight loss, so last spring.

I calibrated my scale to the Dr’s several years ago. Who knows how accurate it is, but at least it’s consistent. :)

Scary stuff, blueiguana! Definitely stay hydrated in this heat!!

Which couch to 5 K app? Looks like there are several to chose from.

Mom60, I used the schedule on this page and did it by time using a watch. I was low tech. ;)

[Cool Running | The Couch-to-5K ® Running Plan](http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)

blueiguana … please see you doctor! Whether your cold sweat and seeing stars is dehydration, thyroid, or heart related, you don’t want to mess with it.

2 big wins for the week: gave up flour and moved the TV out of the kitchen. I miss the TV more than I miss flour:) Lost 2 lbs!

lg, you go, girlfriend! And thanks for the bday card! I did watch what I ate yesterday at birthday brunch and dinner but am not weighing in today so don’t know if there was damage. One of my dangers is sitting and reading near the kitchen, so anything you can do to get further away from the food will help.

Yep, that’s the Couch to 5k app I’m using…I use it on my iPod Touch - don’t have music on my iPhone…and I like the app cause the timer clock that counts down each section of the workout has numbers that are BIG so I can look on my armband and see how much time is left!!! :)

Thanks for the info on the apps. I’m actually getting an old iPod from a sibling just to use for my Couch to 5k attempt. Something makes me really nervous about running along (er. . . walking, I guess) with my own iTouch. I keep thinking the jostling/weather/??? might be bad for them?
