Weight Loss for Dummies

<p>no greenies for me either.
Musicmom- I am also having aburger for dinner with a bun. Cooked at home on the grill with onions and avocado. Still not quite ready to get on track.
Small step I am doing my PT exercises again.</p>

<p>Started Wheat Belly a week ago, lost 6 pounds already…looking to drop 30-35, so far it’s as good as anything out there and much cheaper than the one that force you to buy their food.</p>

<p>Wheat Belly is a fairly new diet - basically, you avoid Wheat and anything with wheat in it. The Theory is that Wheat, even whole wheat, has gone through so much agri-engineering, its not the great natural food everyone thinks is good for them, and nothing like the wheat grown 100 years ago. Today’s wheat also leads to a craving for more carbs, contributing to the obesity epidemic in America. It was recently featured on Dr. Oz, and there are two books out - one for the diet, one with 150 recipes. I believe you can get the diet book for about $12 on Amazon, and there is an official blog.</p>

<p>I don’t believe every diet is right every person, and who knows if the science is really there, but I do know it’s working for me thus far. Here is the link:

<p>Having a burger for dinner shouldn’t be a big problem - especially if you put a good amount of veggies on it. It’s usually what went WITH the burger (fries, potato salad - that kind of stuff) that becomes the problem.</p>

<p>I do manage to skip the ‘deluxe’ part of this diner burger so no fries, potato salad, or chips.
But the burger itself is huge, the onions and mushrooms are dripping in butter/oil and it is delicious! </p>

<p>I’ve been making much better food choices, especially adding in more protein, less carbs.
But this particular menu choice can’t fit into ANY healthy food group.
I’m sure a burger fixed at home with fresh vegs would be fine.</p>

<p>Just drop the bun from that burger. Everything else is edible. Bun is a complete waste of calories, has no taste and consists primarily of chemicals. All this “whole wheat” thing is a buch of bolonie. I personally do not care fo burgers, I rather have a bloody steak, the one with the dripping blood on your plate. But if burger is made of a good part of bief, it might be a tasty treat. Anyway, not a big fan of meat in any shape of form, couple times / month only if my H. insists, I do not miss it at all. chicken is even less favorable. No big on protein, but I like nuts and a bit of cheese, greek yougurt (maybe one time/week, if I remember about it) and I completely forget consuming eggs, maybe because they require cooking, and I am not big fan of this activity at all.
I primarily consume carbs, mainly munching on fruits whole day long, fresh and dried. I eat other foods when I remember, not big in memory department any more, slips my mind. But having packed lunch at work definitely helps. Sweet potatoes are my favorites, yes, I love everything sweet. Oh, well, diabetese is practically inevitable for me anyway, cannot avoid your destiny, all my relatives either died from it or have it already.</p>

<p>Am enjoying a delicious smoothie I made this morning at home. So much more refreshing than a cup of coffee! Just felt the need for something cold to sip on at work instead of hot.</p>

<p>This morning’s concoction:
Fresh strawberries
Frozen raspberries
couple heaping spoons Stonyfield whole milk plain yogurt
couple heaping spoons low fat cottage cheese
ice
small spoon of organic strawberry preserves for sweetness
enough skim milk to blend nicely</p>

<p>Really good! That along with 2 eggs, barely scrambled should keep me going till lunchtime!</p>

<p>I cannot consume lots in one sitting, I have to munch thru whole day, like every hour or so, morning is especially very sensitive time. Large breakfast as advisable as they say is a big no. It works only during vacation after few miles walk on a beach before breakfast and I do not need to cook it either. Other than that my eating in a morning starts at about 4am and continues all thru lunch at 11am.<br>
Delicious smoothie sounds great for the dinner time. We do them pretty often. Whenever fruit is good but does not have much taste, we put it in a blender along with all other tastless fruits, then add lemon (with rind) and honey or agave. This way otherwise tasteless fruit is not wasted and still consumed. The smoothie lasts for several days, but has a bit of bitter taste because of lemon skin. As most people do not like it, they can remove skin from the lemon, but I love it this way.</p>

<p>Was out for dinner with friends before our meeting last night. Shared sliders with another person. Cannot imagine trying to eat them without the buns. It would simply have been a small piece of meat with sauteed onion, and thats not what we wanted. MiamiDAP, you are welcome to dislike buns, sugar,meat/beef, chicken, exercise other than swimming,… you name it. But really, having a more positive outlook on life will go far. No need to be so constantly negative. And diabetes is NOT inevitable. Unless you do not watch your weight and diet. Your call.</p>

<p>I have lost 7.4 since 1/1, 14 lbs. since 12/1. Don’t know if I should be excited or worried. Total is now 86. :eek:</p>

<p>I found a couple of “before” pics yesterday. Geez, this weight loss has aged my face.</p>

<p>Amazing CD!!! Are you eating ok? Not overexercising??? Eating enough calorie rich but balanced foods? (lean meats, whole grains, dairy - not just fruits, veggies, and water?!)</p>

<p>Maybe there are some suggestions here for that “aged” face - maybe a little sun and or a new makeup regimen???</p>

<p>MiamiDAP–this is a SUPPORT thread for people trying to change their lifestyles to be more healthy. Your negative attitude of “diabetes is inevitable” is not really helping here.</p>

Incredible! 86 lbs?? Wow!! You deserve a day with a facial and make-up specialist! Treat yourself!</p>

<p>CD: Losing 7.4 pounds in 9 days (since 1/1) sounds too fast.</p>

<p>Actually, if anything, I should be eating more veggies and fruit. I tend to do Greek yogurt w/ Costco Ancient Grains sprinkled on top for breakfast, high protein pasta for lunch, fish/chicken and salad for dinner, and 1-2 pieces of fruit for snacks. Last night I had leftover beef carbonnade over rice and salad for dinner and I still lost a pound. I have beef once or twice a month. Am following AHA guidelines on fat, sodium & cholesterol very strictly. I’m also on blood thinners, so I have to be careful about Vitamin K. Thankfully, my glucose levels dropped nicely when I started this 19 months ago, so I am not going nuts watching carbs and sugars – but I need to be mindful, since diabetes is a major risk factor for more cardiac excitement. </p>

<p>Would be pretty impossible for me to overexercise at this stage, given my cardiac issues. I do go to the rehab gym 3x/week, but I am not burning off major calories. Am mainly working on cardiac fitness. </p>

<p>I never had wrinkles til I lost weight. Now I have a turkey wattle! I really need to do something with my hair, but am not sure where to go with that. I’ve had my hair short because there is so little of it, but while it looks better a bit grown out, it has no body and just hangs/sticks out awkwardly.</p>

<p>martharap, it seems too fast to me, too. </p>

<p>My usual pattern is to lose 3-4 quickly, gain half of it back, then lose it again. Generally have to lose that pound two or three times before the loss finally sticks. Had a long, long plateau late this summer/early fall, and then the loss started kicking in again in its usual pattern. </p>

<p>Think I will call my doc, since I need to go in about a couple of other things, too.</p>

Sounds like you may need a really good conditioner and/or Argan oil treatment for our hair. I believe the oil has lots of vitamin E and might be good for your skin too.</p>

<p>I cannot tell a lie. I thought this…my mother was diagnosed with diabetes when she was in her early 50s, I was seriously overweight. I wasn’t careful about what I ate. I just figured that my getting diabetes was inevitable–maybe I should just start eating like a diabetic would, just to get into the habit. Naaah…</p>

<p>And then my brother was diagnosed with diabetes! Suddenly, diabetes became entirely too real and I came here to this thread. Not all diabetes is avoidable, but certainly the effects of some kinds are mitigated with eating right and losing weight. </p>

<p>I think that it is OK to be realistic about the increased possibility/prevalence of diabetes (negative thought), coupled with a desire to eat properly and lose weight (positive thought).</p>
