Weight Loss for Dummies

Wow, CountingDown, that is a lot of sodium! I thought Chipotle was healthy. I don’t often get an opportunity to go to one, probably just as well.

My favorite, filling, easy dinner (well under 300 calories): Caramelize 4 sliced yellow onions in olive oil and a little butter, using 1 t sugar and salt and pepper. This will take at least 45 minutes. Add a package of Trader Joe’s cooked French lentils (in salad section, shrinkwrapped in a block and wrapped in cardboard), break up the block and press on pieces to separate lentils. Heat through; add fresh baby spinach or arugula and let wilt.

1 cup of this is very filling; I usually have it with a large green salad.

Not that anyone is going to want to take cooking advice from me after the raw shrimp thread…

Just the burrito tortilla is 670 mg sodium!!
For me, the hardest part of my diet is cutting sodium…it’s everywhere!

CD - I agree! My health issue is BP and I have found that all prepared foods are way too high in sodium. Because I don’t use salt at home, I don’t even like how salty everything tastes when I go out to eat - but it is rare to find a place that doesn’t overload with salt. Even low sodium versions of foods that are available in stores don’t meet my standards. It is not easy.

Man, the sodium in Chipotle never occurred to me! I don’t have BP issues (yet) but just calculated the sodium in my usual Veggie Burrito Bowl with corn & tomato salsa. Over 1400!

I thought I was eating healthy…brown rice, black beans, all sorts of veggies, topped with cheese. Well, it is healthy except for the excessive sodium. Why do they have to oversalt everything?

Edit–usually I can tell if something is too salty but the veggie bowl is so tasty I didn’t notice. At Qdoba I had something (tortilla soup or gumbo?) that really was so salty I could hardly eat it.

NYmom, we’re sure you’ve learned your lesson. :)

CountingDown, I’m keeping a food log too, complete with calories, which I’m finding is a good weapon against just thoughtlessly stuffing things into my mouth. Forgive me if this has been posted before, I found this really great, user-friendly calorie counter: [Calories in Food | Nutrition, Carbohydrate and Calorie Counter](Food Nutritional Database | CalorieKing)

The other thing that’s helping me stay on track is logging my daily weight on an Excel spreadsheet which converts the data to a chart. I HATE the days when the line goes up, so that’s motivating too.

Grabbed this before it fell even further than page 7! I really really shouldn’t have read that risotto recipe…:o

Snowflake reporting in … Back from India a few pounds lighter. I ate most meals of delicious Indian food, except for a few days in the middle when my tummy was adjusting, but I didn’t have my typical evening snacks. Now if only I could do that in the US!

Spring is here now so my exercise will shift to hikes and walks.

How is everyone else doing with the shift in weather and more light?

I weigh in daily…gotta keep things under control. What blew me away about Chipotle was that the corn and pico de gallo were over 400 mg of sodium EACH.

Another source of surprisingly high sodium: pancakes.

Am getting out and doing yard work, though DH is not happy I cut the grass (though didn’t go out and do it himself, either). Have been at a plateau for the past six weeks, but just dropped a couple. Gotta keep the run going. Would really like to be at normal BMI or lower by S1’s wedding celebration (beginning of August).

Also need to figure out some targets ab work, because after trying on all these MOG dresses, it is clear that my middle is still an issue, and shapewear doesn’t hide it!

Marilyn thanks for bumping us up.
CountingDown - I need to get back to weighing in daily. I find it helps keep me honest. I also need some target ab work. My middle is a problem area. No matter what I weigh I seem to have that stomach bulge I am small chested and I think that doesn’t help.I At least I have now reached an age where people don’t ask me when I am due. By the way I love the last dress you posted.
My problem this week is that I am on my 4th lunch out this week. I have a hard time ordering the salad!
SnowflakeVt- It is a beautiful day today and I need to get out and get moving.

OK, I learned to do planks and didn’t die. I have a LONG way to go to hold it for 30-45 seconds, though! Must watch my cranky shoulders.

CountingDown, A yoga instructor gave me a tip about shoulders: focus on pulling up your armpits. If you try it, it stabilizes the entire area.

I was at the gym today walking on the treadmill and watching TV. I almost never watch except when I’m on the treadmill. I’m frequently shocked at the ads. Today I saw a long ad for catheters - apparently people can insert catheters themselves??? There were models for men and women.

I immediately did Kegel exercises while walking.

Found the thread. Posting to subscribe

Ifound the thread again, finally faced my weight, have been working out for a month after a winter of bronchits x2 whereI was sick for 6 weeks each episode. Hopefully I can follow and get some inspiration.

Welcome, fogfog and welcome back those who have been away and are checking back in.

I am up early and wish I had a good workout video I could follow. Anyone have a suggestion on a yoga (beginner) or general workout DVD?

I could take the dog for a walk but he’s too tired from all the hikes this weekend to care.

I would also love a workout video. Or maybe Marilyn can give me some advice on how to work out using the Wi.
I have finally lost 1 lb of weight that I don’t think is just water weight. It is a start. Now 9 to go to get back to where I was 6 months ago.

NYMomof2-- your post is inspiring me to do kegels as I type!

Down 20 since Thanksgiving. Less stiff. Stronger. Want to keep going in this direction!

Re the Wii fit - I basically just start each day with a weigh in and 20 minutes of the advanced step aerobics. It’s not really that high energy, just a way to get a bit of aerobic movement. Sometimes I do the run around the island, or the biking - both of which essentially are walking/jogging. I’ve also done some of the yoga and strength training. I don’t think DH counts it as “real” exercise, but he also didn’t count the 45 minute bike ride around town last weekend as “real” exercise either. I think anything that gets your body moving and heart pumping faster counts!

I have an old videotape which I think is called Denise Austin’s low impact aerobic workout which I really liked but ever since we got HD added to cable, I haven’t figured out how to play the old VCR.

At the moment my weight is starting to creep back up so I have to seriously get my portion and self controls back in action. I want to wear all those new clothes I bought last summer!

Ladies, if you have not yet discussed this, you might want to check out the latest book by Rachel Cosgrove on weight loss. I got a copy based on idad’s recommendations and can say that it is a great motivational read with solid, practical, easy to follow weight loss advice written in plain English.

BTW - Great job, everyone! Keep it down :)
