Weight Loss for Dummies

I’ve been on a plateau for a while. I think it’s about time to lose another pound, but it’s unlikely to happen this weekend! Bastille Day party coming up - we’re bringing les escargots!

My biggest problem is that my back went wonky this week so I’ve been trying not to stress it - even walking is uncomfortable.

I am hovering around my plateau for the last 6 weeks or so as well. However, considering all the visiting we’ve done, and the company that we’ve had recently, it’s okay. It has been gain a couple, lose a couple for the past few weeks. I’m ready to lose a pound now too!

Well, putting on the full court press this week before leaving on the 21st to meet my daughter for 10 days in Amsterdam and Belgium. My weight, too has plateaued, about 10 pounds over what I think is reasonable to maintain. However, the workouts have led to better strength and a more fit, albeit overweight, physique. I’m trying not to stress eat; my 26 year old is living with us and looking for a job - he has 2 degrees and a paid, almost fulltime internship, but he needs to get moving, literally and figuratively, my MIL is having heart surgery while I’m away (planning couldn’t have been worse), and it has been about 1,000 degrees here. Focusing on getting and aerobic and strength workout in every day has really helped, even if the scale refuses to budge. The last few days I have really cut down on any kind of simple carbs and upped the water…we’ll see! Now, if I could just make a little room for the chocolate and frites all will be well!

I’ve just joined the ranks of the wounded warriers :(. I was walking in the upstairs hall late Thursday night when one ankle started to give way. I counter balanced on the other foot and next thing I knew I was on the floor with my foot bending the wrong way. Naturally DH was out of town for business. I scooted myself down the hall, down the stairs, and across the floor to unlock the front door, stopping to get a phone and call 911 on the way. 24 hours later, I have one sprained ankle and one ankle broken in three places and held together with pins and plates. And DH made it home. Currently waiting for my first food in a day - partial liquid diet. Tempted as I am to order everything from the desserts menu, I will have to be very careful what I eat with no exercise. Argh - guess I won’t be helping DS move back home - the guys are on their own to do this.

Oh no Marilyn! So sorry!

Oh no! Time for special focus on how to make foods that work for your goals also comfort your heart.

So sorry. Here’s to a quick healing.

Sounds very painful, Marilyn … hopefully you will find good healthy options to eat while you are healing. Sorry to hear the news. I will take a walk for you today!

Oh no Marilyn. Wishing you speedy healing.
runners,on- I am also trying to get to a good weight before I head to France for 2 weeks in June.

Well, Marilyn, the good news is that if you can’t walk up and down stairs you can boost yourself up using your arms. My arms never looked better than after I broke my leg. I would hold my leg out and hoist myself up and down the steps!!! Lost weight, too!!!

Not that I recommend anyone try this approach…

I hate typing on the IPad.
Should have read RunnersMom. And I am going away in August.

Oh I am so sorry Marilyn! It really adds insult to injury when you are trying to work toward a weight loss goal and get hurt and have to stop exercise. But think of it this way, this is a great time to really iron out your diet and find foods you love that make you feel full and satisfied that help you work toward your goals. By the time you are healed and can add exercise back to your routine, you will already be doing everything else right and will only have that last step toward getting fit and healthy. You can make SO MUCH progress in this time even without exercise. For now, just focus on getting better and healing fast!

Best of luck healing Marilyn. How scary that must have been beings alone !!!

Oh, Marilyn, so sorry to hear. Sounds very painful. Hope you heal quickly! And best of luck sticking to your guns with the diet, too. A good diet will help speed your recovery – maybe that’s the best way to think of it.

Thank you all for your sympathy; came back home last night with plates and zillions of pins in one ankle but all things considered not doing so bad. Three weeks on the walker then three weeks in a boot - goodbye summer!

Worknprogress, I can see what you mean about strong arms - I’m on a walker and basically am lifting myself by the arms rather than pushing off with my better foot (that ankle is only sprained). I’m so so glad I lost all that weight and got my health in shape between 2011 and 2012! Plus I got to brag to all the nurses.

I was hoping there was something aerobic I could while recuperating at home but the PT’s at the hospital couldn’t think of anything that didn’t involve standing up. Guess I’ll stick with strength training! They kept me on a good diet (very nice room service menu) so I was well behaved other than the Kit Kat DH smuggled in.

I have to admit that between DH and me, I’m the one better suited to laze around doing nothing and being waited on hand and foot. And I’ve decided to tell people that I broke my ankle crewing in the Mac. If you’re not from the Chicago area, I’ll be happy to explain!

Marilyn- I am glad you’re back home and on the mend. I can’t recall exactly what the machine looked like but I have a picture in my mind of a machine at PT where you sit and pedal with your arms. Marilyn is your H going to be in charge of the kitchen?
I have a long car drive later this week. My goal is to bring a healthy lunch for the car. That way I won’t end up so hungry that I stop at In and Out burger.

Glad to hear you are on the mend Marilyn. Tell people you fell off the deck at The Pink Pony  drunken sailor talk lol!

Oh my Marilyn. So sorry. Didn’t you break a leg or something a few years back or am I misremembering?

jym, I broke a toe and was in a boot a while back but I think that was before WLFD. DH had a hip replacement two summers ago; maybe that’s what you remember? The home health care person came today and is going to give me 20-30 minutes of exercise to do 3-4 times a day to maintain my muscles so that’s good.

deb - is that the Pink Pony on Mackinaw Island? I think I was there many years ago!

LOL - DH just came home from errands and stuck a (melting) soft serve cone with sprinkles in my mouth! I only had two bites but mmmm. Even better than the flowers he brought me in the hospital.

Yep. The Pink Pony is on Mackinac Island. H’s family are big sailors although H hasn’t done the race for years.

Apologies-- It was MARIAN who broke her leg… like 6 years ago!! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/299328-shopping-crutches.html?
