As a former Michigander, I should be ashamed - Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City.

Marilyn/Marian
Mackinac Island/Mackinaw Island
potato/potahto
tomato/tomahto
lets call the whole thing off… :)

OOps-- meant Mackinaw City :o

We are going to Bon jovi tomorrow and leaving for Florida for a week on Friday. Saturday is my birthday. This will be my first week away from my fitness equipment since I started working out. At first I was looking forward to the chance to have an excuse to take a whole week off, now I am trying to find ways to avoid it. I’ll be bringing my Pilates DVD and I’ve bought some goggles to give lap swimming a try for cardio… It’ll be too hot to do anything else. I hope I like swimming. I wear prescription glasses so with goggles on I won’t get water in my eyes but won’t truly be able to see, so I’m not sure how ill monitor my time or keep from getting bored. I’m also not very good at freestyle stroke so I’ll either have to get good or find a different one that will be good cardio… I’ve always favored slower strokes.

It won’t be a great week for diet or fitness, but I am going to do my best to minimize the damage and get right back to routine when we come back. After this trip I have no more big events I feel the need to lose weight for until the wedding, and there isn’t even a date for that yet so I have some time. Though I’m imaging myself in a nice May wedding, 20lbs lighter in my dream Maggie Sottero dress… Hopefully the stars will align and that will work out. ;)

Emaheevu, back when I did lap swimming I’d do medleys, 1 freestyle, 1 breast, 1 back, 1 side and either count the groups of four or just look at the clock and do laps for x minutes. I never lost an ounce swimming. It seemed to make me hungrier. I wear glasses, but find that the magnification under water means I see pretty well. My prescription isn’t strong. Goggles with prescription inserts are surprisingly inexpensive.

It could really go either way for me. I am outside all day with no access to snacks, playing in the waves and swimming all day, and drinking a ton of water-- sometimes I lose weight without trying, but last year was the first time that didn’t happen and my metabolism has only gotten slower. So, I’ll try. Swimming definitely makes me hungrier than usual, but I will swim just before one of my larger meals so it might work out. My mom, dad, and fiance are all trying to lose weight and be active right now so it should be a supportive environment. I haven’t gained or lost a pound in three months so if I can at least not GAIN any weight, it won’t be any different from being home. :\

Medleys are a GREAT idea, if I do different strokes I won’t get so bored… didn’t even think of that. My glasses prescription is very strong so I’ll only just be able to make out the sides of the pool, I’ll have to set a timer to go off when I’m done and wait to hear it. Sounds tedious, but so is being overweight I suppose! My fiance plans to swim with me so maybe we’ll keep each other into it. It’s only a week.

Marilyn - glad you took my comment in the light-hearted way it was intended. Afterwards I felt bad for not sounding more sympathetic.

What these experiences do make you realize is how devastating it is for older people when they break a hip. They just wouldn’t have the upper body strength to manage the way you are doing. The other detail - no one explains how to go to the bathroom without putting any weight on a leg. I realize this might be TMI - but let me just say I celebrated when my bowels moved!

Hello all. I am having a great summer outside of work, but my consistent exercise is MIA. Somehow, the metabolism gods have given me a break, so I thank them.

Marilyn, please keep healing.

Ema, good for you o. Worrying about the exercise DVD. If you are that motivated, you will go far!

The good thing about this year is that my golf swing is awesome. I am like the girl version of Tiger in my imagination anyway.

Bump although I am the last person to report progress on weight loss! Slowly knitting bones, got surprised by some big blisters which are healing beautifully, saw my regular doctor twice for them and my surgeon once, switched home health care agencies to the one we used for DH’s hip replacement, found a home helper company to arrange for someone to come help me a couple of times each day while DH made a necessary overnight business trip last week, found a better cheaper company for his longer trip in a week to help DS move back home, learned to navigate around the kitchen in a wheel chair and feed myself… Arghh. I may not be weight bearing at all on the broken ankle for two or three weeks. The PT says there aren’t too many exercises I can do under these conditions so I’ll have many months of therapy down the road.

I must say overeating is not an issue because I either have to spend a long time manipulating around on my own, or bother DH to whom I am trying not to be a burden. Someone said I may lose weight due to muscle loss :(.

I am having an interesting time doing all my computing on my iTouch. It takes a long time to type since I never got the hang of using thumbs. I am exercising my index finger at least!

Thanks WLFD friends for providing a place that I can moan and groan.

Oh, Marilyn.
I am glad that it sounds like you’re getting the logistics of the injury under control-- that would make me less stressed if it were me-- but there is just nothing that isn’t cruddy about this for you! I feel for you, wishing you a speedy recovery.

We are headed home tomorrow. I think I maintained my typical weight, but I won’t ever know exactly because we BROKE our scale when we were trying to measure the suitcases for the flight (and no, they were NOT that heavy.
) Swimming did not work out for me, I could only keep my heart rate elevated for a few laps before I got too tired to keep that pace, I’m just not used to swimming. So I just stayed very active, did my Pilates DVD a few times, and I lifted some weights. I think I am going home no worse for wear. Which is good, because we need to go wedding dress shopping when we get home.
here’s hoping losing a size or two between now and the wedding won’t be an issue with whatever dress I pick out.

Oh noes, where did everyone go?! Doing as well as can be expected here although probably at least 2-3 weeks before I can start any weight bearing. No summer for me! And at this very moment DS is moving back into the house.

But the real reason I bumped - saw an article in the WSJ this morning about a study done in Tel Aviv with about 90 overweight and obese women. They were put on 1400 calorie diets. Half of them ate 50% of their calories at breakfast, 36% at lunch, and 14% at dinner. The others did the reverse - 14% at breakfast and 50% at dinner. The “breakfast” calorie group lost twice as much weight as the others and had better triglycerides and HDL. I’m just not that hungry at breakfast to eat half my daily calories! But it’s certainly food for thought ;).

That’s interesting! I eat about half my calories between breakfast and lunch, the other half at dinner… It’d be interesting to see if I’d be willing to eat a smaller dinner even with a bigger breakfast. I kind of doubt it.

Well that explains why snacking at night isn’t a good idea … I will have to each my Ocean City Johnson’s caramel corn in the morning if I am going to get back on track!

Marilyn, still wishing you a speedy recovery. I wish we could help you out in person.

Bumping this thread up.
I survived 2 weeks in Europe and did not gain a lb. I was very pleased. Forward to this past week when my youngest was in town for a week. I haven’t got on the scale but I don’t think it will look good. Mexican food with chips and guacamole, Indian food, pepperoni pizza etc you get the idea. I also have not exercised.
Tomorrow- back to clean eating and at least a bit of exercise.
Marilyn- hope you are healing nicely.

Marilyn, just saw your post about the timing of eating. I am doing 1400/day and that’s about the ratio of my calorie intake to time of day. Food after 6 pm makes me gain weight. Period. Are you able to start PT yet?

Lost 10 lbs shortly before S1’s wedding – wasn’t trying, but I guess I burned a lot of energy. Was also hitting cardiac rehab almost daily to help with stress relief. I did really well with avoiding the cooking part of wedding prep until afterwards, when we had all kinds of perishable leftovers that needed to be eaten within a few days. Found a significant fraction of those 10 lbs again, but have now lost four of them.

Reminder to self: this is a lifestyle change, not a race.

Yay - the thread lives! And definitely lifestyle change, Countingdown.

I’m continuing to progress albeit slowly. I was on a boot for two weeks and got permission a few days ago to switch to “gym shoes” and something for balance (mostly the walker but am beginning to use the cane), which is a great relief and really accelerated my getting around. I’m walking up and down stairs so moved back to the upstairs bedroom (from the dining room where DH moved a twin bed).

But there’s not much flexibility in the back of my ankle so I’m moving slowly with little steps. Not sure how much the plates/screws/pin are affecting that; thick ankle anyway! My orthopedic surgeon doesn’t want me to start outpatient PT until my next X-rays on Sept. 9; he is having me soak in hot water for a while each day and doing motions exercises. He says that’s enough therapy right now - a cautious guy! So it’s going to be a while before I really can exercise again. With DS home I find myself eating more and really have to knuckle down again. Not spending most of the day five feet from the kitchen may help! Haven’t weighed in yet - waiting until I can put both feet down without a shoe on - but from the fit of my Rosh Hashona dress I’m sure I’ve gained five or so pounds.

We went to see my mom today - she broke her wrist last week. She says I’m cheerful; I said no, I’m just acting that way to keep from thinking about how I really feel. I’ve missed you guys - I was afraid everyone left and didn’t want to be that person who keeps bumping a dead thread. So again - yay!

I love this thread. I’m still in my up a couple of pounds, down a couple of pounds mode. Haven’t made any progress, lately. Too much company, schedule changes and an abundance of yummy food. However, I did make a big batch of soup (veggie soup with some sausage) and plan to go back to eating that (soon, after I finish off the salmon leftover from the Thai restaurant we went to last night), in the hope that filling myself with that will limit my eating of other more fattening things. Hope to have something more exciting to report sometime soon. Like an actual loss. In the meantime, hang in there everyone.

S2 made grilled chicken and pasta with bechamel sauce tonight, soaking the dried shiitakes in cognac. Please, please hurry up and go back to school. I can’t take this any more!!!

glad this thread continues…thanks mom60
congrats on your s’s wedding countingdown, and yes this is a lifetime/lifestyle change

I read your post marilyn, sorry you’re still in recovery mode, made me feel grateful to be able to continue exercising, it definitely helps with the weight loss. I’m doing WW and working out at the gym 3-6 times a week, depending on the week ;)

I know what you mean about kids home, it’s definitely more challenging, but I’ve been pleased that other than a day or two on vacation, I’ve tracked and stayed within points values, gone to a meeting every week. I am committed to really following the WW plan as I’ve often done it my own way, with poor results, like stopping going once I’ve gained.

so far I’ve lost 21 lbs, and I do feel like I CAN do it, make this a lifestyle change, I’m not doing this to look good for an occasion, or as you said coutingdown, I’m remembering it’s not a race. so maybe we can all be tortoises together and win this time…

Guess this thread has essentially closed down - is everyone over on the “lose weight without exercising” thread?

Bumped to report that I finally did my first Wii fit weigh in since my accident - and I was down a pound! In fact, I weigh the same as I did on July 10. This was a complete and delightful shock to me. I understand that some of that is due to muscle loss, but considering I did no exercising and was somewhat careless in my eating, I am very relieved.

Had my 8 week X-rays yesterday and the bones are healing fine - the doctor OK’d me to do anything I want (except skiing and skating ;)). I’m going for a physical therapy evaluation tomorrow then will start one month of therapy. My ankle is still stiff and swollen; it’s full of plates and screws. So I’ll let the therapist help me back into an exercise routine.

So how is everyone else doing now that the summer is over and kids are back in college?
