Welcome, DrGoogle! This is a kind group and we want you to succeed in your health goals!

Dr Google, when I am suffering from insomnia I tend to snack more, usually on carbs. I think my subconscious is telling me that if I eat something I’ll “feel better”. It never works, but I fall for it almost every time. (Btw, I count landscaping as exercise.)

So when you have insomnia you actually get up and eat? In the middle of the night or are you just waking up very early for the day and consuming the carbs then???

Thank you for the warm welcome. The other exercise is more intimidating.
I don’t get up in the night and eat when I have insomnia. But I feel listless in the following day. What’s worse, I couldn’t pay attention in meeting and dose off after lunch while sitting in front of my computer. Something in never ever did before. I did mention this to my boss and he said he also had it at one time and to watch out because it could become permanent.

I meant the other exercise thread is more intimidating. I need to start with baby steps.

Get a blod test for the insomnia. Could be vit D, iron, thyroid.

No it muscle related. My muscle are so stiff after 3 or 4 hours of sleep then I woke up and can’t go back to sleep until a few hours of toss and turn. Then the alarm goes off.

Why are your muscles sore? Exercise, lumpy bed, dehydrated?

The muscle pain can definitely be related to a Vitamin D deficiency. I am a fairly intense exerciser so blamed my muscle pain and discomfort on exercise. Completely related to my significant Vitamin D deficiency. You might want to have a blood panel done.

Welcome DrGoogle - this thread is all about baby steps - as EPTR said,
We haven’t really done the weekly weigh-ins for some time but the support from this thread is outstanding.

The only thing I can add about fatigue and insomnia is to make sure you stay hydrated; I believe that can also help with weight regulation.

I was told to take vitamin D. My right hip has some form of arthritis due to sport injury when I was much younger, like in my teen, but that’s not causing trouble.
I had shoulder injury due to yoga, which I started to help my arthritis. Then we had an accident that through off my right shoulder even more. There was a while I could barely control my fingers in the middle of the night to use toilet paper even.
But over the last 10 years I persisted and kept going to massage and the shoulders finally got better. But the in between stage is what caused my stiffness. In the last 6 months I’m able to sleep through from night to morning and not waking up around 1 or 3 pm. It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t have to get up at 5am to go to work. So just one thing or another and I had a snowball effect.

For those who take fish oil pills. Do you take them all at once or separate into one with breakfast and one with dinner

I separate them between two meals, mom60. I take my Vitamin D with a fatty meal - there is new research that indicates absorption is better, although I’m sure in a few weeks there will be another study that says it doesn’t matter. When I took all my pills at once I noticed some unpleasant burping…fish oil burps are not something you want.

Sabaray- thank you. I took the vit D3 this am with breakfast but I will move it till evening since my breakfast rarely has fat.

My doctor tried me on fish oil pills but I discovered I had a delayed (couple of weeks) allergic reaction which caused a rash on my neck. Not a common reaction but I had the same problem with prescription Lovaza. I’ve never liked fish so never knew!

Marilyn, there are other oil pills you can take that have some of the good fats … You need the good omegas.

Google, the arthritis will get worse faster if you don’t exercise regularly. In addition, regular exercise like walking can also help regulate your sleep. Getting your body moving does many good things for your body, and weight loss is just a beauty bonus.

Marilyn, You could try this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009ET4LS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I prefer to eat my “good oil” instead - nuts, oils, avocados, fish. I hate the burp thing.
I also shamelessly eat saturated fats like bacon & butter. Need it for brain health.
I only avoid transfats.

SnowflakeVT, my arthritis doesn’t bother me too much. I used to not be able to sit for 2 hours at work. Luckily, that is no longer a problem, I can sit for hours now. I don’t know what I did but maybe therapy and all sort of things helped. I also gained weight since then but that didn’t seem to hurt.
I do think I should exercise more, I’m sort of in the lazy category due to life. My husband and I agreed that exercise help with sleep, we want to make sure we do this because sleep is extremely important. That’s when your brain is doing maintenance and rebuilding things. Agree that weight loss is not the main goal. But I know I must take action now. I still wear Gap size 8P pants, material is a bit yielding, but I notice on tighter pants, I can’t fit in.

scholarme, I eat all kinds of fats, meats, and vegetables. Very minimum grain, rice, and carbs. I also love olive on top of the nuts, coconut oil, avocados and fish. I don’t take fish oils yet but my husband does. His parents took them all the time. That’s must be a reason why they never had to visit any doctors when they were alive, only until late like 80s.

I’m also reluctant to take Vitamin D, I don’t know what I eat but both my husband and I have to cut my nails every 3 weeks. If I take vitamins I could be worse.

I also worked out that I’m allergic to almonds in quantity (like a big handful a day) so am apprehensive about trying any new kinds of oils etc. at this point! My doctor only wanted to see if it would help my HDL go up; I’m usually just under where I should be. LDL is fine. Triglycerides are fine. Weight is still a constant fight. I’ve had Vitamin D supplements from time to time, along with daily Caltrate, but I just tell my doctor she should prescribe me a cruise

In other news, DH saw the doctor today and he can take off the sling and start physical therapy. And drive himself. and do dishes! Interestingly enough, the doctor said it’s possible the rotator cuff tear was there already before the accident; not uncommon in men his age.

And…and…DH says we can request bids on our house!!!
:D
