Weight Loss for Dummies

Marilyn- that is wonderful news. Hope your vision of San Diego becomes a reality.
I don’t know if this is fact or just my imagination. I went to dinner last night at the house of a friend. I ate wheat in the form of crackers and a 1/4 cupcake and a few small french cookies. I also had a small amount of ice cream. I feel tired and slug like this morning. My ankles also look swollen and a headache. Wonder if it could be the wheat or the sugar. So today I am back to no wheat and no sugar.

Marilyn, great news! San Diego is beautiful.

I’ve been gluten free but occasionally I have a small cake for celebration at work and I get a headache. I don’t have the same problem with ice cream. Just wheat.

So went swimming today after nearly a year of not exercising. 10 laps and I had the pool to myself for the most part. It’s nice to float effortlessly, let’s hope I sleep well tonight.
Other exercise I did was painted my column the second time, lots of upper arms exercise. Then I cut some Coronado Stone for finishing the surfacing of my column, glue them with thinset and cement. Up and down and all sweaty. It must be good exercise.

Hi folks! And welcome Dr.Google. I saw that this thread was active again and it’s good timing for me. After a summer of ridiculous over-consumption, i am back on the health wagon. Not weighing myself (mostly because my scale needs a new battery) but I think that might be a good thing for the time being.

Eating clean and trying to get more water on board. I’ll keep checking in!

Thanks EPTR. I have to report I had the best sleep after exercise. Didn’t get up the normal time. I don’t care what I weight because I gave my daughter the scale. My joke for her is that I didn’t need it because it’s always constant.

Marilyn, good luck! We closed (selling) on the big family house two weeks ago and are still settling into our rental. The new house plans have been on the back burner but we are anxious to get back to work on it. Our hope is to break ground as early as possible in 2015 and be in by the end of that year.

As busy as I was organizing, packing, and keeping up with the “Bag a Week Club”, and now unpacking, my running wasn’t on the back burner; it was off the stove. Yesterday I started a Couch to 5K program. I did keep up with my Y workouts so at least I didn’t die on the hills.

BIG C25K fan here!!! (raising hand!!!) Let us know how you like it.

My tip: do the workouts to your own personal satisfaction, not just to get them done or be defeated. If I didn’t feel like I finished a certain week/day workout to my satisfaction, I just repeated it. Took me a little longer to complete the program - but so what? Instead of 9 weeks, it took me 12 or so - at age 50+ who cares? I was still getting regular exercise and making gains on completing it.

Had my labs done yesterday; mostly OK but daily blood sugar is up quite a bit so they want me in tomorrow for an AIC finger prick. I’m hoping long term is still in acceptable range and I won’t have to change my meds. Either that or I convince my doctor that I’m going to hunker down and start dropping weight again. And reduce stress and get more sleep and maybe have less Splenda. And that acceptable ranges increase as we age. We’ll see…

Also Vitamin D is way down again so she’s putting me on a weekly super pill. I knew I need to live in a sunny climate! We’ve already got our first offer from a very committed individual who has offered an acceptable price and six months post-close possession. So if the builders can’t beat that price we may have a winner. It’s hard to believe it’s really happening… I feel a bit guilty because DH had to close out his childhood (well, age 15 and up) home this summer and now I’m asking him to leave this home. But he always agrees this isn’t the right place for us to live at this point in our lives; he’s just worried about making a mistake and not being able to afford our chosen area. This is a man who does not like change - I always say that’s why he’s stayed with me for almost 40 years!

I’ve already checked out the exercise classes at the San Diego JCC and am all ready to start Tai Chi and Aqua Exercise. They have a lovely rate for couples over age 62 so there’s a benefit of aging!

Marilyn, I did the Vitamin D super pill - have to go get my levels retested, but I felt much better after only a few weeks. I think living in San Diego will also have a pretty positive impact!

Yes, I only want to move to San Diego for my health

Marilyn- tell your H it is Drs orders.

Marilyn - Chiming in on San Diego. My daughter is in her 2nd year at UCSD medical school and LOVES San Diego. She was worried she’d miss the East Coast, where she was for college and several years working subsequently, but now she doesn’t even want to come home in the summers;).

Congratulations, Marilyn! I’m glad you’re on your way to the next home.

To those taking vitamin D and/or calcium - have you heard of vitamin K? I’ve been reading that it moves calcium from the arteries to the bones and teeth.

I’m still doing the spinning classes, usually 2x/week. And more addicted than ever. I’ve been surprised at how quickly I’ve improved. At first, my only goal was to keep moving for 45 minutes. Then I gradually was able to actually follow the teacher’s instructions (in terms of speed, weight, etc.) for the first part of class, then go at my own pace for the rest of the class. I’d gotten up to a little over half the class keeping up (and enduring the rest of the class). Last night, to my surprise, I was able to do the whole class keeping up with the teacher.

San Diego is beautiful. Every time we drive down to UCSD, we can see the ocean on the right.
Well, I know I’ve lost weight, one of the best indicator without the scale is that I can fit into this new bra which I was not able to fit. :D

Not much exercising this week except to go around and helped my sister look at stuff at the design center for her new house. I did some weight training on my back, if you consider some small Thai/Chinese person walked on my back for 15 minutes a form of weight training. She must weight at least 100 lbs and she was rocking me like a boat. But I liked it, tipped her a little extra than normal.

I haven’t excercised nearly as much as I would like. House addition is a big distraction. But I have been on my feet a fair amount since so many projects are under construction and I’ve been eating sensibly in general, so weight as remained fairly steady.

I went swimming today, 12 laps. My husband went with me but didn’t swim because he already jogged every day this weekend. He didn’t want to shower again. I will try to stick to the same routine. Go swimming on my day off.

I went swimming last week, but somehow Monday morning my leg felt a bit stiff and then a full blown injury and then the arm as well. I was in such pain last week, unable to walk. I was starting to feel sorry for my old age self in the same line as old age is not for sissies kind of thinking. But then my young boss, 20 years younger told me he also injured his back swimming. He gave me stuff to help deal with the pain at work.
So perhaps, the weight gain had put more force and when I did a dive I must have injured myself. Either that or overstretched. I would be more careful this week. Here I was thinking I have more fat and can float easily, swimming is a piece of cake. This weight loss for dummies is hard.

Sorry to hear, DrG. That doesn’t sound comfortable at all. Feel better soon!

Snowflake, thank you. I will take this week off from work. Both to nurture my feet and also to practice retirement.
