Congrats, that is so exciting, Marilyn!
The weather has finally broken in my corner of the world. (We set a record for the coldest February ever.) Yesterday I ran in capris and a long sleeved shirt. It was a little chilly (should have worn a cap) but it felt so good to get some air on my body. My biggest challenge is insomnia which has me reaching for my comfort foods. All in all though, I’ve been keeping on track. I think the one thing that might give me a boost is giving up alcohol but I really don’t want to do that.
I’ve had a lot of insomnia during this whole process and I know lack of sleep affects weight (and blood sugar). I’ve been thinking of mindful meditation or whatever it’s called, but so far haven’t lasted more than a minute counting my breaths before I start thinking of everything else.
Hello all, I was enjoying a great winter of cross country skiing and then had to start traveling for work to Asian countries. My exercise routine changed immensely due to long plane rides and lots of meetings and taxi drives so I tried to limit my food to adjust. It mostly worked as I didn’t gain any weight.
Marilyn, you new home situation sounds perfect. I hope it all works out because that sounds like a great setup for making good health easy.
On the other hand, this last trip seemed to have introduced bacteria into my tummy … Ugh. Not a great way to lose weight, but I am thankful that I arrived home before it hit me. I ate only at fancy restaurants and only drank bottled water at other places, so I need to re-assess what I am doing wrong. I just don’t like wasting 1-3 days after I get back for recovery and re-hydrating.
I am in sunny California now visiting my D … Such beautiful weather here! I don’t want to return to the east coast for mud season. Should get in some nice walks and hikes while here.
Marilyn that’s so exciting! At last! My daughter is in medical school at UCSD and she loves it there. I wish you all the best.
Need to bump this thread. Need Help!!
Just saw marilyn’s posts and good news. Need to get some weight off for the kiddo’s wedding!!! Its time to GET SERIOUS.
jym, how long do you have? Do you have a dress you can hang in the hall, or picture you can hang on the fridge, to remind you to keep you on track?
I keep telling myself I’ll lose back the weight after we move. First we have to get through Passover, though - a dangerous week! We saw the house last week (love it), got hit with snow here yesterday, and I’m ready to go although it will probably be late May. Maybe packing all the boxes will be good exercise…
I am open for this thread to become active again. I like the support and the tips. I have a very physical trip planned for beginning of September and want to be in good shape. I need to lose some weight but also get my cardio and develop some muscle strength.
Marilyn- I am excited for you that this move is finally happening.
I ate well today but have a night out tonight with friends.
Not enough time!! Just under 3 mos! I have a dress that fits, but really would love to lose 10-12#.
Jym, 10 in 3 months is a reasonably doable goal! 35,000 calories/90 days = ca. 400 calories/day. Walk 2 miles and skip 2 slices of bread a day, and you will be good. You can do it!!!
It is great to have a goal. Makes the journey easier.
Even I think that’s doable and I follow the world’s slowest diet. Didn’t get enough exercise this winter and also have 10 pounds I’d like to lose. Now that the sidewalks are no longer sheets of ice I really have no more excuses not to get out.
I am gonna try. Been working out but the weight is not moving
Jym, I am confident that you can do it. And when you get almost there, here are some good tips for the week before the big event:

I wish I looked like any of them!!
Has anyone done the Haylie Pomeroy fast metabolism diet? I am not one usually for structured diets and this one looks hard. You cant eat anything! That will cause weight loss. Is it doable?
Ack! No coffee?? Dont think I can do that!
No coffee? that’s stupid. I take mine with milk! I would never do that diet, but I would go wine-less and trim any non-fruit carbs and simple sugars ruthlessly.
He does have some ideas on how to improve appearance in the short term leading up to the event. Foregoing salt will get rid of bloat and unnecessary water weight.
He? Who is he?
This diet looks IMPOSSIBLE http://www.chewfo.com/diets/the-fast-metabolism-diet-by-haylie-pomroy-2013-what-to-eat-and-foods-to-avoid-food-list/#generalavoid
You might want to try lowering your carbs. Not low carb, just lower. I found out thru my biometrics that my blood sugar is raised past “low risk”. I eat way too many carbs. I decided to experiment, so decided to keep my calories the same, same exercise and just lower carbs to see if I would lose weight. Well, I lost 3 lbs in 3 weeks just by cutting the carbs (but keeping calories). I eat about 150 g of carbs a day…sometimes lower, sometime higher of course.
But I bet I was eating 300-400 carbs a day. Of course, pasta rice eand bread are bad bad bad. And we should watch it whether we want to lose weight or not because of diabetes. This is how it was explained to me in simple terms.
Carbs turn into sugar in your body. When you eat too much of them (which apparantely I do), over time your pancreas stops producing the insulin your body needs because you are providing too much to it from the carbs. You are sort of ruining your organ. Then…it just stops working properly and then you become a diabetic. When you only provide your body the carbs it needs, your pancreas functions properly and produces plenty of insulin.
1/2 cup grapnuts - 48 carbs
1/2 cup oatmeal - 28
apple - 25
Orange - 25
banana - 25
1 cup skim milk - 13
1 cup cooked pasta - 42 (how many of us eat just one cup)
1 slice wheat bread - 18
1 cup rice - 45
2 tablespoons peanut butter - 6
Yogurt - (6-19) depending on the kind
This is just a sampling of things. What I’m finding difficult right now is finding enough to eat to fulfill my calorie requirements with lower carbs. I’m still working on that.
Throw away any “diet” that has a name! Do you want someone to prescribe what you should eat? Or do you want to make your own choices based on what will satisfy you on any given day (and be healthful)???!
