Oops, BB, just saw your shout out. The scale is not my friend and the wedding is in less than 3 weeks. Oh well. It is what it is.
It is what it is … Get yourself an outfit that fits now and you will feel better about celebrating with family and friends.
Thanks for the ideas, abasket.
Shopping is done. I think.
Here we are in sunny San Diego, waiting for our furniture to be delivered tomorrow. We’ve been camping out in our empty house for almost a week. I figure the hectic weeks of packing must have given me some exercise, not so much the four days on the road. Or all the eating out; I pretty much have been ignoring the rules. Haven’t weighed myself in two weeks, ever since I packed up the Wii fit!
But I took DS for some sight seeing in various places that involved walking. And yesterday we drove out to Cabrillo Point and took a long walk. And we’ll start hitting the farmers markets and cooking mostly at home. Hopefully by Flag Day (my fourth anniversary on this thread) I’ll have some good news to report.
Marilyn- though I don’t know you in real life I’m so happy for you. Enjoy your new home.
It’s the day after my fourth anniversary but I do not have good news to report. One week ago we got the call that my mother had passed away. It was a surprise but not a shock as my mother had a history of falls and was currently on blood thinners so well, anyway. She was 89 and in the most positive frame of mind she’d been in a long time so not the worst way to go I guess. All of it was somewhat surreal as we’d only been in our new house 12 days and had our furniture for five days. Didn’t expect to be going back so soon (she had lived half an hour from our previous home).
We flew back to Illinois last week and I’ll be here a couple more days working with my brother on stuff. Obviously not exercising or paying much attention to what I’m eating with everything that’s been happening. I had weighed in once after I unpacked the Wii and was down a pound and a half even with all the dining out.
I know it’s important to take care of myself and will try to establish a routine once I’m settled back in San Diego. Haven’t really been in a routine in life for months with all the moving and now this. This thread was the best thing that happened to my health four years ago so do not want to let it fade away.
I’m so sorry to read this, Marilyn. Take care of yourself - I know this has to be a tough time.
Marilyn, sorry to hear about your mom, I think 89 is considered a long life in my book. Neither my parents lived that long.
I too need to keep this thread alive but I’ve lost $10 lbs but gained back a few pounds here and there but yesterday I went shopping for clothes because I have coupons and I don’t fit as well in my previous clothes. It was hard. I told my husband I realized after looking at the mirror, that I need to lose weight and going shopping is the best weight maintenance. I used to do lots of shopping when I was younger, no wonder I was thin. Picking clothes and changing take a lot of steps and moves. I had to buy new clothes because my old clothes were too loose. This morning I’ve weighted myself and I’m back to the 10lbs lost mark. I need to break through that number somehow.
So sorry to hear about your mom Marilyn. Hugs to you and your family.
Marilyn, big hug to you. I’m sorry that your mom has passed, but am glad she was in a good place.

So sorry, Marilyn. Please take care of yourself. We’ll keep the thread going for you until your return.
So sorry Marilyn. There is never a good time.
I lost about 4 lbs Just before the wedding but was still 8 or 10 more than I’d have liked. But it was fine and I am in Japan so I am not dieting at the moment!
Wait, jym - you are in Japan… You are on a diet, LOL. Japanese food is supposed to be good stuff, served in small portions.
I joined the Diet, Exercise etc. thread as I embarked on the C25K running program. It’s a group of wonderfully supportive people who have helped me stay on track. The weight loss part has been incredibly frustrating, however. I have increased my activity (tracked by my new Fitbit Charge HR) and know I am moving much more, but even tracking (via WW), I have managed to lose less than 4 pounds in a month. I really don’t have any desire to embark on a really restrictive diet (no carb, no fat…whatever), but I am so frustrated. I do feel healthier, my clothes fit better, but I know I need to weigh less (per my doctor). Just venting…off for my run!
Ok to vent runnersmom! But 4 pounds is not shabby! As long as you are eating decent and exercising you are more likely to keep the weight off losing it slowly.
Quite a few of us on the diet/exercise thread have lost substantial amounts of weight - I think what worked best for most of us was cutting back on carbohydrates and added sugars. Eating whole foods in their natural state (instead of relying on “diet” foods like Lean Cuisine, etc) has made a huge difference for me in weight loss and maintenance while giving me the energy for exercise. You can do it!
@runnersmom, definitely don’t feel discouraged. I lost over 30 pounds in about a year. During that time I rarely even weighed myself, just because my main idea was to get my eating on track and let the rest follow. I didn’t go on a calorie-restrictive diet. I made sure it was a change in how I ate that I could stick with for a lifetime. My main thing was to cut down the added sugar that I ate (in all foods, not just desserts) to, first, twice what AHA recommends (50 grams a day), and later to what AHA recommends (25 grams a day - 35 on weekends for now). My second major decision was to slowly eliminate processed foods, as I felt ready. My program for myself wasn’t exercise-based. I did start to walk more, but I didn’t really start exercising until I got more energy and felt ready for it.
I am happy to report that I am back to my idea weight, and now I am actually exercising more, because I want to be stronger.
If you are interested in my ‘journey’, I described it here. It’s all very individual, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask or PM, whichever you feel comfortable with:

^^^ I have to agree with much of this. The key is a good balance of food/exercise, a CONSISTENT schedule of those two things and the biggie - TIME. Time to let your body naturally adjust and benefit from the changes. You want this change to last forever, right?
Good balance of food/exercise = what Sabaray said. “Whole foods in their natural state” is a biggie.
Consistency = most of the time you are eating well, and keeping active. Maybe 90% of the time. But yes, you can go off the wagon and have dessert occasionally. Yes, you can skip a day of exercise when you are busy or not feeling well. But you need to have a good track record when you look at your week/month. On and off the bandwagon all the time will not work!
Time = time for your body to naturally adjust to the changes and to make the body changes more permanent and healthy. I too do not spend time on the scale, but the mirror and loose clothes are my friend. With better food choices, portion control and exercise on a consistent basis I lost two clothing sizes over a year and a half or so. And have maintained it.
Find your rhythm and keep it. Benefits will prevail over time.
