Weight Loss for Dummies

Ack for phone typos in post # 6089. After the massage I was trying not to talk myself out of going to the gym-- and I didn’t. I went. (That is, after I hit TJMaxx and bought some socks, some leggings and a hat-- love those sales.)
My goal is to be able to enjoy skiing without being super sore. Quads are usually my challenge. Occasionally arms get sore if we have to pole a lot for some reason. But when my legs get tired, I get sloppy and I fall.

Sorry about your trainer, 1moremom. I lost a friend to ovarian cancer a few months ago. When we get back, I think I’ll inquire on our neighborhood facebook page and/or the multi-neighborhood resource (nextdoor.com- quite handy dandy) to see if neighbors have recommendations for a trainer, and see what the responses are. I like referrals. The guy we currently use was recommended. I think would have been more content if we were still at the gym where we started, but shortly after we started he left there, moving to a smaller place, with no explanation (he probably got a better deal, I guess). We will just take a break from the current trainer, and if we don’t find a better option, we can restart.

VaBluebird,
Thanks for asking. We will have a mishmosh of people coming and going for skiing on different days, so I am not completely sure when each is arriving and how long they are staying. Current plan is for DS#2 and his gf to meet us Sat, and we will go out to the slopes (Colorado). But she has grad school classes so not sure how long she can stay, or how long DS will stay. DS#1 and his wife arrive Mon night. A friend of DH’s arrives Sunday and will be staying a few days. Old friend of mine from HS who lives in the area and usually joins us for skiing (he lost his wife this past year) will come out Tues. for the day. When we leave, DS#1 and wife stay for a few more days and have friends coming out to take our place in the condo. I splurged a bit and got a ski in/out condo, so if I get tired I can take a break. Sounds like they have lots of snow so it should be a blast, assuming we dont have travel issues getting to/from the slopes.

Does your gym allow outside trainers, bookworm? I think ours requires trainers to be booked through them and its $$$$$$. Thats why we go elsewhere for the current trainer.

Ouch!!! I had some pumpkin soup and I had it in a coffee cup. I sipped it carefully but half way through it I took a swig and totally burned the roof of my mouth. Skin has come off in sheets! Oweee.

But in happier news, DH and I met 32 years ago today… On a ski trip!

Happy Anniversary jym!

Nice memory, jym!
Hope your mouth heals nicely. I hate it when I do that.

Happy anniversary! When do you head to Colorado?

This weekend, runnersmom. Can’t wait.
I hope my mouth heals too, VaBluebird. One of the people joining us for a few days trained at the Culinary Institute. I hope he choose a meal or two!!
And thanks too, mathmom!

DD2 (the one in UA’s Million Dollar Band) is skiing over spring break with a band mate and her family - who rents a place at Granby Ranch CO. I will remind her to continue exercising so she is in skiing shape. She will want the break from school based on her course load this term. Can’t afford for her to scratch the school term with a big ski injury…I’ll be praying.

I got the ingredients for the cabbage fat-burning soup and will make it tomorrow. H actually started eating the other soup, which he likes. H is funny about his weight loss trek - several nights, several hours after supper, he will eat a peanut butter sandwich instead of the other low cal options. He has 13 lbs to his goal.

Friend posted this recipe - looks good and is probably pretty diet-friendly. I actually bought shrimp yesterday, and ate some with cocktail sauce. This dieting is making me stay hungry…

Spaghetti with Garlic-Shrimp & Broccoli

Servings 6 servings, about 1-1/4 cups each
What You Need
• 1/2 lb. spaghetti, uncooked
• 4 cups small broccoli florets
• 1/2 cup KRAFT Tuscan House Italian Dressing
• 1 lb. uncooked deveined peeled large shrimp
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1/4 cup KRAFT Grated Parmesan Cheese
Make It
• Cook spaghetti in large saucepan as directed on package, omitting salt and adding broccoli to the boiling water for the last 2 min.
• Meanwhile, heat dressing in large skillet on medium-high heat. Add shrimp and garlic; cook and stir 3 to 4 min. or until shrimp turn pink.
• Drain spaghetti mixture; return to pan. Add shrimp mixture and cheese; mix lightly.

^sos, that recipe looks fast and tasty. Reminder about the cabbage soup, the recipe makes a lot of soup, but we ate it for several days. Adding cottage cheese as suggested by a blogger, did make it creamier, delicious.

Jym- it’s been cold in colorado, of course, and just reminder for those who are unfamiliar with high altitude, easy on big meals, and strenuous activities, alcohol, even cafeine for 24 hours or so. I get relief by taking 600 mg of Advil every five hours the day we summit, and this is after spending the night in denver to acclimate. It has helped me avoid altitude sickness for many years, since I discovered this method.

Sounds like a yummy recipe. Might make it for the crew when we are skiing!

Well, it’s been just over a month (Dec 11) since I bumped this thread up, and I’ve lost 7 lbs. I am quite pleased. My target goal is the same # I set in my head for all weight loss plans, but I don’t know if my body really likes to stay at that weight (if I can hit it) as it tends to sit a few lbs more when it’s stable at my lower end. That “stable” number is 10 lbs away, the target is 13 lbs away.

It took me a while to get my motivation going and get my head in the game, but I think it’s there, and I hope it continues, even if I take it easy a bit when we are on vacation.

Oh Southjerseychessmom, I just saw your post as I was typing. I will start to hydrate to get ready for the altitude. Bought some hand warmers I will read your link. Don’t want altitude sickness, though fortunately I’ve thus far never had it.

Congrats on the weight loss, jym!

7lbs since dec 11 ! Impressive jym- how did you do this ???

Wow, that would be great even if it wasn’t the holiday season. Kudos to you!

Started with a modified paleo type thing, eating mostly fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish and fruit/protein smoothies. I was by no means perfect, as I used sweetener in my coffee and a few other things, but it got me started. Then added in cheese and some other dairy (I tried a chocolate yogurt as I don’t like yogurt- it was ok). I’ve had some bread (a piece at an Italian restaurant and it was good!), and some butter and some popcorn ,I had some gelato and wine and have been out to dinners and parties and taken some liberties at parties that I chose to do, as this is a lifestyle change, not a “diet”. I believe there is no difference between being on/off a “diet” but rather to eat sensibly. I have recently had a biscotti, 1-2 small york peppermint patties to quench a chocolate/sugar desire, and a small packet or 2 of welch’s fruit snacks. And I have been exercising much more to get in shape for skiing.

The biggest issue was really getting my head in the game. Ironically, getting ready for skiing somehow was a stronger incentive than my S’s wedding this summer!! I hid under a comfy dress for that-- figured they’d be looking at the bride, not me! For me, I know I have to get my head in the game, and once I do, I can tell myself there are some things in this world that were not made for my consumption  or I can taste it and stop.
That’s where I am at present. I don’ like to exercise- admittedly, so I do it because I should, and mostly at present to get in shape to keep up, as best I can, with the family on the slopes.

You’re doing great, jym.

Made this last night. Dh loved it. Low cal.

Tonight I’m going to make a healthier version of this–
http://www.halfbakedharvest.com/spanakopita-stuffed-spaghetti-squash-bowls/
It’s basically spaghetti squash “twice baked”, with spinach, sundried tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, feta and lots of garlic.

Tonight we’re having sauerbraten and red cabbage. It’s been marinating for days and smells yummy.

@VaBluebird , I’ve got a chicken breast and a tree full of ripe Meyer lemons so I think I’ll try that tonight!

@jym626, great work. I wish I could start budging my weight.

I’m starting to keep an eye on the step count in the Health app on my new iPhone - hoping it will inspire to me to walk a little longer when I’m out. I put it in my pocket today when I did my little Wii Fit step aerobics- learned that in 20 minutes I walked about 3/4 mile (1500 steps), all without leaving the living room. So that’s a start at least.
