Weight Loss for Dummies

Protein powders are often MUCH less expensive on Amazon. I buy my one-kilogram tubs from Amazon for 1/3rd less than they cost locally.

Bob’s Red Mill recently introduced a line of flavored (vanilla, chocolate, chai) vegan protein powders that taste really good.

Just as an aside for those of us in earthquake zones: I used several of the enormous plastic screw-top containers that my protein powder comes in to make emergency sanitation kits. They hold two rolls of TP, some wipes, and a bunch of plastic bags. Sure hope I never need them!

The field of fitness trackers has an overwhelming number of options. To help narrow the field, consider whether you want a tracker that also looks and functions like a watch, whether you want or need GPS functions, whether you want to monitor heart rate and last but not least, whether you need water resistance that is good just for superficial splashing or whether you want to be able to swim and shower while wearing the tracker. These filters will greatly narrow the field. After that, look for user interfaces and software that are easy to use and have the features you want. All of the major companies are releasing new models. Under Armor just came out with an integrated tracker and scale which looks pretty interesting.

Finishing at the gym. Slow and steady…

Remind me why you all are using protein powder? Is this to make a shake as a snack or are you subbing a meal?

I use protein powder as part of the ingredients for either a liquid lunch or dinner. The lunches are usually on weekends after I do high intensity or long duration cycling workouts where I want to replenish glycogen levels and get an infusion of lots of protein for muscle rebuilding. I have the shake for dinner when I do extensive resistance training at night and finish too late to cook a dinner. The shakes are about 650 calories and give me about 39 gms of protein. I make the shakes from 1% organic milk, a cup each of organic frozen strawberries and blueberries, the protein powder, two tablespoons of organic peanut butter and a banana. The perfect post exercise recovery meal and tastes sooo good!

I walked over 14,250 steps today! Hooray, but it not does not happen often… Walked all damn day! My goal in 10,000 but usually make. 8.ooo or 9,ooo. Really have to exercise and walk a lot to make 10,000 steps.

Congrats @morrismm - that’s a lot of steps!

Weekly check-in

Food: ugh, kind of all over the place.
Vegan Days: 3, I think. (Goal is 5). Didn’t end up really focusing on veggies this week.

Processed sugar free days: not sure, maybe 3-4. (Goal is 5)
My Fitness Pal: sporadic tracking

Exercise: better than food
Cardio: 3 days treadmill (met goal)
Strength: 3 days weight machines (met goal)
Bikram yoga: 1 day (goal is 3)
Fitbit: new goal: 10,000 steps a day

Weight: gained 2 lbs.

I’m happy that I finally got three cardios in because I think that’s the bare minimum for heart health. Obviously I need to tighten up the eating though. No tracking is no good.

Ready for another week! Good job everyone!

A really good protein Nutrition Supplement Powder is “Unjury” which is recommended by the dietitians with our hospital wellness center. www.unjury.com/reviews - I like the chocolate splendor. They have strawberry. Contains milk, soy, tree nuts (Kola) - allergen info also on product container. 100 calories per scoop.

“Unjury protein has a superb amino acid profile. It has a PDCAAS score of 100, the best and highest possible score. Many other sources of protein, even beef, do not get a score of 100.”

Don’t know if others are familiar with Unjury.

Yesterday was one of those days where I had the munchies-- couldn’t figure out what I wanted so kept nibbling. Finally killed a bag of popcorn .

Finishing up at the gym. Needing to really push it today. Not as driven, but I am here.

Jym626- it’s great that you are there. I know the feeling of just pushing yourself. I’ve been not feeling great and I’ve pushed myself to just walk out my gate and start walking. If I only go a short distance it is okay. I’ve found that once I’m out the door I go into autopilot and at least get my minimum loop done. It is 80 degrees today and I’m just glad I walked before it gets any hotter.
I’m looking forward to feeling better and getting my energy back. I also find it harder to eat well when I’m tired.

I’m pushing myself, too. Off to Zumba…

Way to go, VaBluebird.

I may make a fruit smoothie since I haven’t eaten much yet today. Apparently on the other thread there seems to be a clear misunderstanding or false assumption as to some of the questions here about the consumption of these and/or adding protein powder to a fruit drink. Speaking for myself, I add protein powder if I am getting little or insufficient protein from other sources. If my food intake tends to be heavy in the fruits/vegetables, its a way to get some protein into the diet. Can’t speak for the others here, but that’s my purpose.

Thanks, mom60. I went out for a walk with DH yesterday, and am VERY JEALOUS of your temps, as its COLD here (well, for here- it was in the low 50s and windy). Its cold today and getting colder. I just wasn’t wanting to do the treadmill today, so decided to do other things at the gym. Started with lower leg/ quad work, then spent 30 min on the bike, then another 20 min on upper body stuff, and then some core. My current hope is to increase the frequency of working out, even if the duration or intensity varies. We had company for 5 days, so it was difficult to manage diet/exercise, but I did the best I could. To me its what I do in my head as much as what I do with my body or my mouth, that counts.

Keep up the good work, everyone.

UH oh!! Didnt expect to be having much of a dinner tonight so drank my protein/calories in a fruit smoothie just a short time ago-- then to receive a call from DH that we have courtside seats to the Hawks-Magic game, that includes food/drinks and possibly seeing some familiar faces. So-- oh well, there goes the calorie count for today!

Today was trainer day and to that I added 25 minutes of biking.
I have started tracking my food intake on My Fitness Pal.

@MichaelNKat thanks for links, useful as I am easing into the whole 30 - while increasing my exercise ( Gaiam easy Pilates, Gilad’s body sculpting, and some nice stretching classes via fitness tv)

These are pointers from article listed above, - applicable to me, someone getting back into exercise habits- not building toning, and looking for weight loss

After my “workout” I snacked on my tray of roasted veggies, brussel sprouts, yam and broccoli !

Will be attending a birthday lunch annd a dinner eating. Have to plan ahead.
