Weight Loss for Dummies

@SouthJerseyChessMom …how is going so far with the Whole30? It’s weird…it is both super hard and super easy at the same time. It can truly be a lot of food! For Super Bowl Sunday I had cilantro lime chicken wings with guac dip and sweet potato fries!

Well, was pleased to see that my weight is stable, despite some snacking. Still have a ways to go, but happy so far with the 8 lb weight loss. I am planning to hit the gym later today, though have meetings throughout the day and a dinner meeting. But unlike past years, when I quit working out after our ski trip, I am keeping up an effort, several days a week, for the several weeks since we returned. So far, so good.

Had a really yummy shrimp , walnut and melon dish at pf changs for lunch ( and a little brown rice). Brought leftovers home for DH. Did 2.5 mi on treadmill (35 min) today plus some other stuff. Fitbit battery was dead so don’t know steps or HR.

The nice thing about PF Changs is that they put their nutritional information on their website.

OOh I didnt know that, deb22. I’d have looked before I went and preplanned my order.

@carachel2 I haven’t officially started- but have eliminated almost all the foods- easing into it, still putting sugar in coffee - ugh that will be hard. Eating only approved foods, don’t think I will miss sweets- a fan of fruit.
But, I feel muscle building, and seeing changes already and this is encouraging!!!

It was your post about your mother’s A1C normalizing, and your personal experiences which convinced me this was the one to try,

Intending to officially start after tomorrow - ( need to help daughter move, and may need a glass of wine afterwards )
I found the forum, where people declare their start date and are " accountability buddies" - super support.

Congrats on the great work, SouthJerseyChessMom!

This is a riot! I so identify!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ6-nCLeDsI The Adele parody is perfect!

Yes, you can see the insane amounts of sodium that makes the food taste good at PF Chang’s. Even the lettuce wraps are insane.

So for fast and abstinence days in Lent (today, Ash Wed) and every Friday during Lent, I decided that I can give up coffee. 40 days w/o coffee is not this year. Also going to figure in exercise. Still trying to get the smaller portions and lower caloric intake handled. I am an ‘ongoing project’.

i thought I would add the MyFitness App to my phone. I selected sign up for a new account to find that I already had an account about 3 yrs ago. I am starting 10 lbs over where I left off last. Goal for this week is to start tracking my food.
I look at the Whole30 plan and I don’t think I would do it. I could give up sugar, alcohol and dairy but I don’t think I could give up beans and legumes.
SOS i could not give up my coffee.I have tried to go off coffee before and I get a huge caffeine headache. I drink it black. I did go through a period of where I did half decaf but I’ve gone back to full caffeine. My H drinks green tea during the week and only has coffee on the weekend.

SOSconcern-
Give up coffee?? Not sure I could do that!! I raise my hat to you!!

I tracked food intake today on the livestrong site. I looked at my old weights. I seem to sit at a weight about 5-6 lbs from my current weight. I have my target weight, but it is very hard for me to stay at that weight without seriously restricting food intake. As it is, in order for me to lose I have to keep under 1200 cal ( a bit more when I exercise).

I really am a dummy. What a difference it makes tracking my food intake! Eye opening, to say the least. Now I will work towards finding favorite lower calorie dishes and combinations of foods that are satisfying.

Breakfast was two boiled eggs, 1 multigrain bread toast w/ 1 Tbsp butter, 12 oz. orange juice and it was a whopping 500+ calories!! Like I said, eye opening!

Yup. I’d hit my daily calorie allotment before dinner. But then we went out to a comedy show. Didn’t eat anything, but had a cocktail. Am about to log that in.

That’s why I eat only one egg and skip the orange juice.

I eat only one egg too but add in slices of Canadian bacon or ham as 2 slices are only 40-50 calories. And only 4 oz of juice. That helps some. I also have fruit but usually skip the bread. I aim for 200-300 calories. And then gave a mid-morning snack of about 150 calories. I find if I eat more frequently I don’t eat as much as I’m not starving in between meals.

Drink as few calories as you can.

Eat your fruit, don’t drink it
If you want the second egg, plan to walk an extra mile somewhere during the day.

If you haven’t eaten for 12 hours or so when you eat breakfast, don’t limit your calories too low. You need fuel to start off your day.

I agree with abasket- drinks that seem innocent can pack a lot of calories. I try to not drink any calories. I drink my coffee black, tea unsweetened and otherwise I drink water. If I’m fighting a UTI I will start the day with a shot of tart cherry juice. I save alcohol for rare occasions.
Today I had a container of Greek plain yogurt, 1 tbsp of peanut butter with a few slices of banana for breakfast.
Dinner was baked chicken breast with herbs and a bit of olive oil. Served it with 1/2 sweet potato plain and a green salad. I make my own salad dressing. I added goat cheese and a bit of avocado in order to give the salad some warmth.
I like the food tracker on My fitnessPal.

3oz Hennesy gold potatoes cooked with butter only have 120 calories and are very filling. Good source of potassium too.

That’s why I eat only one egg and skip the orange juice.>>>>>>>>

I never keep orange juice around. I had it because I was warding off a cold a couple of weeks ago and I’m too cheap to throw it away. I know it’s better to eat an orange and in fact, I prefer it.

We had company last week who asked that we have juices in the house (they each wanted something different) so I got OJ for one, and blueberry-pomegranate for the other per their request. There was still some left after they left, so I have used a little bit in a fruit smoothie if I made one, just to make it less thick.

@abasket and @mom60 - is the reason not to drink calories because it’s too easy to consume too much without realizing it? I do know that if I make a smoothie with a piece of a banana, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, Sometimes some spinach, pineapple and mango (and a little protein powder and some liquid which had been water until the recent juice in the house), it is VERY yummy and filling, but too easy to consume too much, compared to what I’d probably eat if I just made a fruit salad. And if I continue to track what I consume, the smoothies are hi cal.

@FallGirl - how was Florida? Were you able to maintain?
@VaBluebird - are you using my fitness pal to track? I had set up an account eons ago but would have to figure out my name.password, etc. I use the livestrong but not the livestrong app-- just the online one.

I was happy to see this morning that I lost another 1/2 lb, which took the scale down to the next , um, I guess it’s decile down. That’s encouraging.
