Weight Loss for Dummies

If you use Spotify at all (or you could think about start using it! - there is a free version for when you’re in WIFI ) look at their lists and choose the “Mood Booster” list - all upbeat music - but it is more current music.

Here’s a link to the Mood Booster playlist - though you will have to create an (free) account. I dumped iTunes a couple years ago for Spotify.

Thanks Mathmom and abasket. My son told me to use Spotify when he was home in December but I sort of forgot. I will check it out.

Oh my, I just attended the orthopedic meeting for health professionals that our large orthopedic group puts on (10th annual) - after seeing a number of people that have had knee replacement infections and therefore a long course to get cleared up (even though it is 0.5 - 1.5% risk for current rate of hip, knee replacement) I totally understand why the obese person with many co-morbidity issues (type II diabetes, hypertension, smoker, etc) does have the knee pain but is going down a road that may end up with amputation above the knee. Saw pictures of BMI 42, 43, 45 on the OR table was not a pretty sight either. The Biofilm (infection) is just plain nasty.

So encouraging everyone on healthy exercise, healthy eating, healthy living.

H, a friend, and I did eat at Golden Corral last night (their steak, prime rib, shrimp was great) and saw a high proportion of obese parents and kids. Sad. I did eat one dessert, banana pudding, which is done very well in the south. We went in celebration of my finishing our taxes - which made me feel like the nasty job was done, only had to pay in a little, and can feel refreshed like after a long shower washing off grime.

@abasket - can you post the spotify link?

Oops, sorry!

They had lots of other playlists as well - including oldies stuff and everything under the sun - or you can listen to one artist or one particular album - or you can make your own playlists - all free when you are in wireless! A few other restrictions of “free” but overall it’s a great thing.

I have an old iPod full of all my most favorite oldies (iTunes) and that is what I listen to.

I watch tv or talk on the phone

I have been dancing to the Hamilton soundtrack!

Aldi has an ‘Anatomy of Fitness’ Core - Book & DVD, $4.99. Now to just use it regularly…

H and I decided we can only go to Golden Corral every 3 - 6 months because the scale tells us it was a ‘bad decision’. Plus just looking at the population there (at least 50% with obese BMI) that would tell you, too much of the wrong foods and quantities are eaten there. But we enjoyed our taxes complete celebration - ended up meeting up with some other friends there.

Counting Down, I was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack today at the gym, and I think it fits the bill for something with a mix of slower and faster bits.

@austinmshauri, the Mayo Clinic calculator is not a bad estimator but it’s important to remember that all of the calculators are estimates, some better than others but estimates none-the-less. What that means is that with even the best online calculator, you may need to make a 100-200 calorie adjustment after testing the calculation over a couple of weeks. The test will be whether you see a trend developing in one direction or another over a few weeks where you weigh yourself on the same day, same time and under the same conditions each week.

I ran the numbers for myself on the Mayo Calculator first using “Active” and then “Very Active” as my activity level screens. It gave me 2150 calories/day to maintain my weight @ Active and 2500 calories @ Very Active. In contrast, a nutritionist calculated 2400 calories for me and MyFitnessPal calculates 2350 using its Active setting. Those numbers have proven to be pretty on the button over time to maintain my weight at 155. If I want to lose weight, I then make daily adjustments based on 3500 calories per week equaling one pound to achieve the rate of loss per week that I want. I generally recommend shooting for about one pound per week loss so as to avoid feelings of hunger and to enable sustainable lifestyle nutritional changes as opposed to “dieting”. For most people, losing more than 1 pound per week of real weight (as opposed to water weight), is going to result in feelings of deprivation and hunger that make the nutritional changes difficult to sustain. I personally use a 1/2 pound per week rate. While it takes more time this way, after having lost 37 pounds and maintaining my target weight range for more than 7 years without yo-yoing, feeling starved or deprived, I firmly believe that this is a sound approach.

Anyone here?? Could use some encouragement on the food side of things. I’ve been moderately ok, but not great, as sweets have snuck back into the consumption just a bit. Also, I love fresh fruit, but even natural sugar is sugar. Trying to eat nuts, but they arent as satisfying. Have kept up the exercise (which is a big change for me so am pleased with that) and now have a friend who is motivated to go to the gym after work, so we’ve been doing that. I might have skipped it today if she wasn’t going too, so this is helpful. Weight has not changed (+/- a pound) in a while. Need to get back on track.

My update had flu last week, while on vacation in Colorado, visiting mother in law. Dr prescribed tamiflu- luckily diagnosed ( strain a ) within 48
Hours. So needless to say with vacation and sickness, diet far from whole30 compliant. Back home and back into whole 30 mindset, again. Haven’t had energy to resume exercising- did get on scale and lost couple more lbs- the hard way.
Jym626 does any part of whole30 appeal to you? Even if you have to bend some of their sacred rules- ?

I did a modified version of whole thirty back in Dec. Its pretty restrictive.

Ah, food. I still have some of the good habits I developed during my weight loss period, which probably helps me hold the line although I really really want to go back down. Self control still a big issue.

Updates - done getting dental work (root canal, two crowns) and am getting back to doctor check ups and such. Blood sugar is not really going down after three months on the new pill so am talking to that doctor next week.

I “graduated” from PT and have a lifetime maintenance plan to retain mobility in the ankle, strength in the legs, and balance. It was opening day for the Padres yesterday and I claim I trained with them. OK, a couple of them were in the same facility as me a few times - does that count?

And yesterday I went looking for a couple of new bathing suits to wear privately around the backyard pool. Don’t have to be flattering; just want to get lots of skin exposed without inappropriate body parts also being exposed (in case the pool guy shows up while I’m out there). I went to a place that theoretically had plenty of larger sizes. Hah - unless larger meant sizes 10 and 12 instead of 14 and 16. The sales clerk agreed that they need more bright colors in larger sizes. They had about eight size 16 one piece suits, six of which were mainly black.

Just went back to tracking via Wt watchers. Day 2 and remembering what an adjustment it is, but feeling committed at this point. I have been exercising, but it is the food that is my downfall. No way to do it except for one day at a time.

I am adamant about honestly tracking every morsel. The past week was difficult as there were times when I was sincerely, stomach-growling hungry and could not afford my remaining daily calories for a snack. I realized I had not consumed enough protein on those days. Anyway, I am down 4 pounds. That said, though I’m quite thrilled, I know me and my body and I very likely will gain next week in spite of basically doing the exact same thing. Or, at the very least, I won’t lose anything more for several weeks now as my body tries this weight out to see if it seems real. LOL. This is like a science experiment! So, my challenge now is to make sure I get enough lean protein every day.

Exercise: Today was my training session. I do really like my trainer and though I can’t say I’m eagerly running off to the gym, I do “enjoy” her sessions. Two or three other days a week I continue to do Zumba classes.

You guys are doing great!! I have not been diligent about documenting my intake. And I’ve had a craving for popcorn lately. But I have been good about exercise.

Went in yesterday for labs and got the results this morning. Delighted and quite relieved to learn that my AIC has gone down one full point in just three months on the new pill. I sure wasn’t seeing that drop in my morning fasting blood sugars. Still a ways from where I’d like to see it but I’m so glad that it’s within a reasonable too high range instead of way way too high range. This has given me new incentive to be more diligent in my morning Wii Fit routine and watch food quantities more carefully.

I wish mental energy used up calories because I finalized all our tax returns today and also prepped estimated taxes.
