Hi all - though the way I’ve done it is not recommended, I’m down about 6 pounds over the last 10 days. My FIL died very unexpectedly and my H’s family defines dysfunctional. I was responsible for helping my H with the funeral arrangements, as well as all the shiva food, supplies, my kids etc. Could find neither the time nor the desire to eat, so voila, 6 pounds gone. I suspect as soon as I start to eat some will return, but it’s a good jumpstart.
So very sorry, runnersmom. May his memory be a blessing (even if the rest of the family is a major piece of work!)
So sorry for the loss of your FIL @runnersmom . . .
Had too good a dinner out last night, have lunch meetings today and Weds. Have to get back on track with the eating.
Me too @jym626.
I definitely need to get with the program. Those mirrors in the fitting rooms are not nice. My feet have been swelling so I’ve had trouble fitting into my shoes. Now that I’m feeling better I am going to start slow by going for walks again. Being more conscious of what I’m eating and am trying to acquire the taste of green tea.
Yay!! Partners in the process. I was better today-- a salad at lunch that I finished for dinner. But didn’t get to exercise today.
I’m out of state w/ my elderly, hospitalized mom. I’m trapped in eating out as she lives in assisted living so I’m staying in a hotel. Ugh. I dread to see the results of this!
Be strong, @vabluebird! Rory about your mom.
Sorry about you mom @VaBluebird. I know how these things can impact our goals and progress. As predicted, my stress-related weight loss is slowly reversing itself, so I’ve decided to try and stay on track by limiting (not cutting out) processed carbs and dairy. Can’t drop the wine at this point - it’s my treat for getting through the day! Once life gets back to normal I hope to restart an effective exercise routine, but for now I’m just trying to get as many steps as possible. Good luck to all who seem to be making the day to day decisions that make up a lifelong plan of healthy living.
Ack for typos/autocorrects!
So sorry for the parent losses and challenges, @runnersmom and @VaBluebird, but take care of yourself. As they say, you can’t take care of others unless you take care of yourself first.
I have fruit and cheese with me for lunch, and had 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Hope to get to the gym today. We shall see.
I’m down about 3.5 lbs. I am sort of tracking my food, but have increased my physical activity quite a bit and I seem to be more conscious of what I eat when I am physically active. Anyway, I’ll take it!
Yay!! Way to go!!
Did any of you see the news show segment last night (national network news, maybe it was NBC) where a retired gal totally turned her exercise/eating life around? She had open heart surgery (and had been way overweight and eating a lot of the wrong things) - then had to have 7 stents. She lost over 120 lbs and is doing all plant based eating and a lot of exercise - she is now retired so has the time for it all. Her H lost 30-40 lb; had a dau that lost over 100 lb too. She regretted not changing her life sooner.
What diet are you guys on?
@jym626 - my fitbit HR is doing the exact same things as you mentioned in your post 6633. I have tried every possible gyration on my phone, iPad and laptop. Still an hour off and no way to change it, etc. Let me know if you found a solution.
I still have issues with it. Had to turn off and on the Bluetooth and I also found that I can’t have the iPad and iPhone near each other as the apps fight.
I just did an he on the treadmill (4.45 mi) and ran into my old trainer here. Ironic. Have been at the same weight but need to get back on careful eating.
Ack my phone doesn’t type. Or it could be my fat fingers. I spent an hour on the treadmill. I was disappointed at the trainer’s un-enthusiastic demeanor which reinforces why I felt I wasn’t finding him a good fit. He is nice enough, but not inspiring or motivating. Perhaps I hoped/expected he would have been more encouraging or impressed with my continued work, and covering almost 4.5 mi and sticking it out on the treadmill for an hour. Oh well. It is what it is.
I have tried to keep up exercise but need to get back into tracking what I eat. We had company last week and ate out a lot. At least my weight maintained. But I do want to lose that last 10. I will get there. Oh, my fitbit is still giving me fits, and today it died (forgot to recharge it) but not before it hit 10,000 steps today.
Hope everyone is doing well on their quest.
Can anyone recommend some upbeat music to play while I am using my elliptical? I know this has been discussed but it doesn’t come up on a search and if I try to read through 6656 posts, I will never get around to exercising. Plus, my post will get this thread back to the first page. I am willing to try anything but rap. I am an official senior citizen so am most familiar with stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s. I tried iTunes but didn’t quite find anything except maybe Bruno Mars. I would love to find something with a mixed tempo so I can do intervals.
I don’t know about upbeat, but I know that for warming up The Drive By Truckers, The Clash, The Lumineers, Billy Bragg and Wilco, ABBA and Jerry Lee Lewis all make me want to dance and move. I usually put my collection on shuffle and then fast forward through anything that is too slow.
@MichaelNKat, is the [Mayo Clinic Calculator](http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/calorie-calculator/itt-20084939) a good one for calculating how many calories you need/day? I calculated mine based on a sedentary lifestyle so I could get a base number, but I don’t know if it’s right.
I use the MyFitnessPal app to keep track of my food, but not my exercise. I’m not an expert, but I don’t think I burn the same amount of calories on a 2 mile hike as my husband does. I’ve lost 10 lbs since January and would like to lose another 10, but I need a reasonable estimate of the number of calories I need to maintain the weight I want. My goal is to retrain myself to make this a permanent lifestyle, not a temporary diet, but it’s difficult when I’m not really sure of the number I’m shooting for.
