I left my fitbit home when I went on vacation recently, but the iphone showed I’d walked about 50 miles in a week. I just got off the phone with the fitbit people as my fitbit has totally fallen apart. I have had it just over a year, but they honored the 1 year warranty and are sending me a replacement. It will have no warranty but I hope I have no problem with it.
AARP Bulletin May had an article by ‘The Nutritionist’ which stated “starting at age 30, our metabolism slows about 5% per decade. That accelerates as we age. And our caloric burn can no longer keep up with foods like ice cream, cakes, pies and chips. Sorry.”
H and I are absorbing this as we are trying to lose weight, and this is holding true as we approach age 60…
Gee, thanks, @SOSConcern, I’m turning 60 in October!
Actually doing a happy dance here today after seeing my pre annual physical blood work results.
Soooo much better than last year, I’m actually looking forward to my Dr visit next month.
THAT hasn’t happened in decades.
Down 36 lbs, Probably need to loose 2-3 more to reach my interim goal …
Which is BMI of 29.9, merely overweight, not obese. I can make it by next month.
Kinda sad to have that goal, but it’s just the first one.
Better still, my A1c dropped from 5.9 to 5.4
Dr will hopefully drop discussion of metformin.
Now, if I could make time fore exercise like you folks, I could really make progress.
My doc put me on metformin extended release low dose prophylactic this year. I have a family history of diabetes beginning in the 60s with all of them normal weight and fairly athletic for their ages. I have Hashimotos dxed in my 20s and I have a high fasting morning glucose > 115 that is rising about 5 pts every 6 months (<80 in the evening) so have an A1C of 5.3. Just 3 years ago my fasting blood glucose was in the 80s. My BMI is in the high normal range and I’m in the gym 4-5 days per week with weight lifting or weight training 2x, cardio 3x. I am 60. I was just over the overweight BMI, but dropped 20 pounds this year with cleaner eating which did nothing for my fasting blood glucose, but did raise my good cholesterol 3 pts. He thinks that without Metformin i have a greater than 25% chance of developing diabetes within 5 years and this is my best shot at not developing it or at least not developing it for a longer period of time. We’ll see…I have a couple more months before my next round of blood tests since starting the Metformin. All my other blood work is pretty darn good and I don’t have hypertension but I sure would like to NOT get diabetes…or at least until i’m 80
but I do feel like a guinea pig once in a while. Although i’m reading more and more positive news about metformin as a prophylactic.
Great job, ladies!!!
And our caloric burn can no longer keep up with foods like ice cream, cakes, pies and chips. >>>>
Yep, I am living proof. Also, alcohol. That is the one and only thing I have extra in appreciable amount and:::::::::sigh:::::::I managed to gain 4 pounds in 2 weeks, LOL. Seriously, it’s so sad that it’s funny.
@momofthreeboys , well, you sure are doing everything humanly possible to ward off the diabetes. I applaud you! My physician is opposed to metformin prophylactically. I had been on it under her predecessor and lowered my A1c significantly, but she is concerned about kidney damage. So, we’ll see with my next bloodwork how I’m doing off it, relying only on diet and exercise.
We had a stressful few weeks when we were unsure if DD was going to pass a course (and graduate from college) due to a wrinkle in a small portion of this course (which she had an A in the rest of the course). She did pass, but I did gain weight during the time. Am trying to keep my calories/fat/carbs in control and getting what exercise I can.
The gain in time for older folks means that in order to eat, one needs to focus on quite a bit of planned exercise.
Hi ladies. Hope everyone is doing OK.
I finally got my replacement fitbit, but DH had to reset it back to factory settings, redo something with my Microsoft account, remove the iPad app, remove and reinstall the iphone app. It was a major production. I would have had no idea how to do it.
Have been less that focused on exercise lately due to other time demands. Will try to go to the gym today for a little while. Lately when at the gym I find I get very hot and very flushed. Anyone else experience this?
DD had a S’well 17 oz metal lined water bottle (can purchase at Kunnukan’s) that really keeps the water cold. I was so impressed I bought one for myself ($36 plus tax). Amazon wants an arm and a leg for them. It has a metal screw top. Mine is a marble pattern. If you examine it, you will find it is very durable but also attractive.
You know when you grab a cold water bottle from your frig and drive around a little and the water gets lukewarm sitting a short time? S’well keeps the water cold! I also fill mine for use at home and pour water into my water cup so I am not opening the frig a lot. It is fine to drink out of the S’well container, but I like to drink out of a glass at home with a lemon wedge.
This is a wonderful product.
Drinking water to help be healthy with weight loss.
Hot and sweaty again. Wish they had better a/c at the gym. The treadmill I was walk/running on calculated a very different HR than the new Fitbit I just got. Like 16-20 beats off. Do not know which is wrong, but the old Fitbit used to be almost identical (within a few beats) the running machine HR
Jym626 hate getting hot and sweaty normally, so if it’s extra bad- yeeks. Don’t know why that would be going on.
I’m dealing with a nasty groin or hip flexor pull, strain. You’d be surprised what leg muscles you need to get off a toilet, until you can’t straighten out a leg and is goes into spasm. Ugh! And, about a month before heels and son’s wedding, it must heal !
Trying to go back to mostly whole 30 - feel better, but haven’t committed.
There are 2 gyms near us-- the older one used to have equipment try with fans on them, but they updated the equipment (though not the ceiling TVs nor did they put in any ceiling fans) and the managers claim that the a/c is controlled by corporate in another state. So it’s really hot. Gym #2 requires going in rush hour traffic but has tv monitors on each machine and ceiling fans. But it still gets hot. Just not as bad as gym #1.
Gyms are almost always going to be hot for cardio work because if they share space with weights, the temperature is usually geared to weight lifting and warm muscles are the goal.
FitBit has been hit with a class action (which is heating up) regarding the inaccuracy of the heart rate monitor. The technology is simply not accurate. The treadmill can be off, too, but usually is very accurate unless it is broken and will read WAY off.
To get accurate and reliable heart rate, particularly when exercising, you need to wear a chest strap. Wrist sensors for trackers and palm grips on machines just don’t cut it.
Maybe they could have different zones for the HVAC in this gym. It’s pretty large. And the weights in this gym are in a separate area from the machines/ equipment. I don’t mind normal sweating. I see that as a sign that I am working out. But the degree of flushing is something new.
As for HR, I am just looking for a general ballpark HR idea. It was nice when the Fitbit and the machines were close, and they were regardless of which treadmill I was on. Yesterday (first day with the new Fitbit that took a lot of work for DS to get working and synced). In fact I am trying to get it to sync with my phone and it is slooooooooowly syncing. I have not Ben impressed with any of the fit its that I have had. This one is sadly consistent with my past experience.
If you are trying to use heart rate to monitor the intensity of your cardio exercise, the degree of inaccuracy reported with the Fitbit renders it useless. Without getting too technical, as little as 5 bpm inaccuracy can be the difference between a cardio workout that is effective for what you are trying to achieve or even to compare one day to the next, and a cardio workout that is ineffective or misleads you into thinking you are making improvements. Frankly, if you are not interested in having true heart rate accuracy, there are much better ways to monitor your cardio workouts.
Even those chest straps can go wonky. At least mine did.
My Garmin 235 wrist monitor seems to be really solid technology. It might not be as responsive by the second as a chest strap, but it is really good and accurate. I also liked the Mio wrist monitor, but the Garmin is more responsive.
I have had completely great experience with my FitBit (have had 2) and no problems syncing at all. I only sync with my phone and not my iPad and I did not get the HR function FitBit. I’ve had the Charge and now the Alta.
Rei has a couple of Garmin watches on sale right now during their Anniversary sale.
