Weight Loss for Dummies

My husband told me he has lost some weight since we do the meat and 3 vegs kind of thing at night. I think I have to add more nuts back to his diet, I don’t want him to loose any more weight.
One thing I figured that’s helpful since we’ve started this low carb thing is that we eat less sodium. I think meat used to be expensive in the past and that’s why carbs were added and meat dishes were more salty(think Chinese and Indian food). Now I only season meat to taste and the 3 vegs are just steamed or eating raw. Low sodium is a side benefit.
We’re coming up to a few weeks travelling for fun. My husband and I like to eat at Indian and Chinese restaurants, it’s going to be hard to do low carbs. I have to plan the menu ahead on what to order. Any ideas?

^We generally just eat the regular menu without the rice, but an easy way to avoid the sauce on rice issue is to order tandoori. Our local place makes an amazing appetizer that is eggplant slices, yogurt, and mint with a tamarind sauce drizzled on it. There are usually some sort of kebabs too.

I definitely have an issue with this - can’t get rings on in very hot weather and my feet will swell up a bit. I asked my physician and he said it was normal.

^^^
Would it make you weigh more? As soon as the weather cooled my weight dropped down to where it was a week ago.

I usually order steamed vegetables with chicken. No rice for me.

Rice and noodles are usually big so just stay away from them. The more American-type places add a lot of sugar to dishes. Sometimes you can just ask the chef or waiter to cook something specific (my wife usually does this as she can speak a few dialects).

In some Indian and Chinese restaurants, it is the quantity and fat/sugar/carb content of the sauces that worry me. You can ask for sauces to be put on the side, made without cornstarch, etc. at many restaurants. I usually have a ginger sauce on the side as it is the least heavy (more like a broth than a thickened sauce) and I need very little to add flavor. I also skip the rice and order veggie dishes as a rule. If you want to splurge, steamed veggie/shrimp or chicken dumplings have carbs, but it is a thin skinned, non fried item.

We ate Chinese on this past Sunday. I had a cup of Miso soup (w.tofu) and the Thai Basil Chicken. It came with green/red peppers, onions, green beans and brown rice. I might have had one forkful of brown rice but ate all the the entree with the sauce.

I had weighed myself Sunday a.m. and all was good…down a couple of ounces. On Tues. I weighed again and was up those ounces plus a couple more (so maybe a half pound swing). It was the first gain I’ve had in months so I felt bad about it and vowed to be more stringent. I hadn’t eaten any other big meals so I’m am blaming it all on the Chinese.
Also I had not exercised on Sunday so no exercise plus big Chinese meal was not good.

I had french fries yesterday - unplanned. Daughter made a bunch and they looked good. I had played 2 1/4 hours of singles (tennis) earlier which should have made up for the fries and turkey burgers.

This made me smile. Only in the good old US of A: a traditional Japanese soup plus a (presumably) Thai main dish = Chinese. The world is flat.

PackMom, if your meal was very salty, you probably retained a lot of water. I always gain a pound after eating a few pieces of sushi (just can’t lay off that soy sauce, LOL).

I thought the same thing.

If you want to freak out, take a look at the calories in Thai sauces at Trader Joes.

My bad…sorry my post sounded stupid. I guess I should have said we ate at a Chinese restaurant that serves primarily Chinese food but also has other Asian options. I’m not quite dumb enough to think something called Thai Basil Chicken is Chinese. It is a neighborhood restaurant that we frequent often and DH always says “let’s do Chinese” even though we usually don’t order actual Chinese food. He had Pad Thai.

PackMom, sorry, I was not making fun of you (of course, you know!), I was just laughing at how the American restaurants can lump all of these Asian foods together and call it “Chinese menu”. We have a bunch of such restaurants here, too.

Here in Northern California my Chinese American colleagues scoff at much “Chinese” food too, so it’s OK:). In fact there IS an authentic Shanghainese dish full of basil that is called 3-Cup Chicken, one cup sugar, one cup oil, one cup soy sauce. My Shanghainese colleague always ordered it, to the annoyance of some from Northern China who prefer their food more tannic.

I’m out of town, egg salad sandwich on whole wheat for lunch, not too bad. I did great with dinner - California Pizza Kitchen moroccan chicken salad - greens, avocado, beets, dates, sweet potatoes. I ate only half and didn’t use more than a tsp of dressing. Has to be good, right?

I am having an easy time today not eating because I’m exhausted and don’t feel all that well. I would almost have rather slept than eaten dinner, but the group was going out, and I knew I’d end up hungry if I skipped dinner.

Bumping up the thread to keep us all in the mood!

Blueberries w/skim milk and a splash of sweetner this morning…SO good!

Had Mexican at home last night. I had made seasoned ground beef taco meat + the usual toppings, had fresh salsa and chips and had some refried beans for whoever wanted some . Also had some leftover spinach-artichoke dip on the table.

Found that I was completely satisfied to low carb my mexican (and mexican is probably my FAVORITE variety of food)! I shredded lettuce and put taco meat, cheese, fresh jalapeno, onions and a little sour cream on top - no shell or tortilla. Then I took some refried beans topped them with a little cheese and fresh salsa - no chips! Had a little of the leftover dip which is is thicker since I did not use mayo - had a small scoop of that. Didn’t miss the shells, tortillas or chips at all.

I was sick yesterday and didn’t get to exercise. I think I’m going to try to take a midweek break and pick up a weekend day of walking, just to spread out my two days off. I think it’s better for my knees. This morning I felt great.

I’ve purposely not weighed myself for a few days, just so I don’t get too fixated on a number. Plus, I’m not sure how this new med might mix things up.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Last night…Red Sox game…ate ballpark food…arghhhhhhh!

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don’t care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win, it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.

Need to add beer, pretzels, nachos, ice cream and popcorn to update the song.

Haha, my son went to a ballgame last night and came home telling me about his chili cheese fries with nacho cheese sauce. Gotta say, they sounded GOOD! I did have to laugh when he said, “if you look around enough you can find some good food there” - I was thinking, “oh there’s GOOD food, but most of it isn’t GOOD for you!!!”
