Weight Loss for Dummies

Last week was good. This week not so good. Last night I had a pulled beef sandwich on a nice roll plus a few waffle fries. My D has discovered Alexa’s frozen waffle fries. They are not the frozen fries I remember from my childhood. Tonight H and the kids are talking about tri-tip burritos down at the beach. Salty tri-tip, rice, a huge flour tortilla and cheese. Not good for the waistline.
H wants the two of us to go camping next week. What are some good ideas for healthy easy camping meals?

Just bought those Alexa waffle fries again at Costco this week - my kids live them too!

Camping as in what type of cooking options do you have? Just a campfire? A grill?

Didn’t know Costco carried the Alexa fries. The BBQ pulled beef was from Costco. It is not something I normally eat. I had picked it up at Costco for my S to use when he had friends over but they didn’t end up using it. For microwave food it actually was pretty good.
H and I used to go camping way back in the day. We also used to go when the kids were younger. H and the kids have been backpacking but I have not slept in a sleeping bag on the ground in years! The things we do for our spouse. We will have a camp stove and a small gas bbq grill.

According to my Wii Fit first thing this morning, I’m down another couple of pounds - total of 8 since I joined WLFD. But most exciting for me - I’m under 200 lbs  for the first time since…well, I’m not exactly sure but at least 2 or 3 years. I can’t brag about it around here because no one knows I was that high - except my Wii Fit, my doctors, and now the greater CC community. It was quite a thrill to start my day. This thread has been such a support!

This was the biggest surprise! That I could eat so much less yet not be as hungry as when I ate too much.

One-derful.

Yeah Marilyn!

Congratulations, Marilyn! That’s great news!

Congratulations, Marilyn! That’s a milestone!

Congrats, Marilyn!!!

Wow! That is awesome.

Now, keep it going!!!

What if any supplements and vitamins do you take and why?
I don’t take anything but figure I should be taking at least a few things.
Just returned from the market and while there I was tempted to buy things I shouldn’t. I resisted and picked up some strawberries and watermelon for an afternoon snack. I came home and ate a couple of small squares of dark chocolate. All I can think if is that my period must be coming soon.

I take a multivitamin and fish oil because the Atkins book told me to and kelp for premenstrual breast pain (works for me) and magnesium because it’s supposed to help with menstrual cramps (doesn’t work for me).

mom60, at least ask them to leave the rice out of the burrito - I think they taste better that way anyway. Congrats on hitting a milestone Marilyn! That must feel good!

For supplements I take a multivitamin with calcium and then another calcium pill, I also take fish oil. I used to take glucosamine but I don’t think it did a thing for me except possibly make me constipated (though I think the calcium is bad that way too, I’m more reluctant to give that up.)

I take medical-grade fish oil (omegabrite.com), vitamin D because I’m low, a calcium/vitamin D supplement (my bones are fine, but I notice that when I’m taking the supplement my fingernails stop peeling and breaking off and suddenly grow long), sometimes I take an eye health capsule (lutein, etc.). I almost never take a multivitamin because they make me sick.

Thanks all!

I take One-a-Day Women’s (I’ve never been good with vegetables) and Caltrate D (the latter on my doctor’s recommendation). She also had me taking fish oil and then Loveta, but I eventually discovered that I got a rash on my neck from them - unusual reaction, I guess, and it took a long time to figure out since it only developed after a couple of weeks. I now think almonds are doing the same thing.

Anyway, after I couldn’t take fish oil in any form, my doctor wanted me to start Niacin. I hesitated because I didn’t like the side effects (not just the hot flashes; also dizziness and other stuff). Then a few weeks ago I read about a major NIH study on Niacin being discontinued. [NIH stops clinical trial on combination cholesterol treatment, May 26, 2011 News Release - National Institutes of Health (NIH)](NIH stops clinical trial on combination cholesterol treatment | National Institutes of Health (NIH)) Although it did improve the numbers, it did nothing for heart health. In fact, the people on Niacin were more likely to have heart issues. They didn’t link the problems to the drug, but figured it was smartest to end the study anyway. So hopefully she’ll understand on my next visit.

My new favorite small chocolate squares are Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Rocky Road Squares. Another One-a-Day! I nibble one slowly to let the rich chocolaty taste and salty nut bits melt in my mouth. Very satisfying at the end of the day.

Marilyn you should feel so proud! Stay at it!!!

Mom60,
My family used to go camping every summer but now that the kids work every summer, we go less often. We got pretty efficient at cooking and also used a small camp stove and a little charcoal grill.
Some suggestions for meals:
Makea pot of soup or spaghetti sauce and freeze it. It can travel frozen if you aren’t going too far and it will melt slowly and you can put it in a cooler when you get there.

Beef tacos are easy to whip up, too and are pretty healthy.

Steak tips or chicken or fish on the grill, corn on the cob can be done on the camp stove or on the grill wrapped in foil.

Cook chicken ahead of time and bring it to add to salads, etc.

Eggs are easy on the grill. We bought one of those flat griddles that goes on the camp stove. Outdoor stores like Rei have plastic egg containers that keep the eggs safe and dry in the cooler.

For snacks: trail mix, fruit, whole wheat bread and peanut butter/fruit preserves.

And of course the obligatory S’mores. Not healthy but it is a camping rule that you have to make them.

DH and I take fish oil, glucosomine and one low dose aspirin daily.

Big congrats Marilyn.

Disaster averted at lunch.

^^^Disaster???
