Weight Loss for Dummies

How much calciuim and how much fish oil. Also there seems to be so many different bottles of calcium and fish oil at Costco. Is there differences?
Mathmom-I did have them leave the rice out of my burrito. I think even with the tortilla I did okay calorie wise yesterday. I had a busy day so ended up just having plain oatmeal for both breakfast and dinner so had quite a few remaining calories left for dinner. The big deal with the tri-tip is all the sodium. I feel it in my ring today.
Thanks for the camping ideas.

I think I eat pretty well so I consider my vitamins just a little extra insurance and don’t pay that much attention to suggested amounts and haven’t done research on it. I take one fish oil even though the bottle says I should have two. The capsules are 1200 mgs. The Calcium is 750 mg and this month’s batch (dh generally buys them) also has 40 mcg of vitamin K and 500 IUs of Vitamin D3. The multivitamin is a Woman’s One a Day.

For fish oil some are made especially for those with shellfish allergies and some specifically say they get rid of the mercury - I don’t know what else to look for.

I’ve never worried too much about sodium contents. It’s never seemed to bother me that much, though I generally weigh a little more after restaurant eating.

Today’s weigh-in: same as last week. As I suspected more than due for a plateau! I didn’t overeat, but was a little short on exercise.

For those that are obsessed with the numbers on the scale and weigh everyday, realize that your daily weight will go up and down. Just for some weekend humor, try a few of these out; if you have a digital scale it will be more interesting!
Weigh yourself-
before and after a shower
before and after going to the bathroom
right before you go to bed, and immediately when you get up in the morning
before and after sex
before and after a meal
before and after exercising

You will find that there is a weight lose or gain, but did your weight really change that must during that short time? I didn’t mean this to say someone shouldn’t weigh daily if they want, just to show how something like taking a shower can change your weight at a given time. Don’t beat yourself up if you went up a half a pound after that dinner on Tuesday as you will see it go back down the next day or two.

If my weight goes down you will have made my DH a very happy guy!

wnp, according to some sources, the abovementioned activity burns 85 calories.
Interesting fact: some ice cream bars have precisely 170 calories… So if you split an ice cream bar with your spouse, then… Nevermind!

Snowball-nice post! However, I always weigh myself first thing in the morning, stark naked, after using the restroom, and before drinking my can of Diet Pepsi and showering. I am trying to give myself every advantage possible  All other ideas welcome too!

I’m told that you burn more calories when you have that activity with different people instead of your normal partner ;)

Go Marilyn!

Go hops_ scout!

Bumping the thread, people! I have lost no weight this week and gained no weight this week. Considering the Fenway Frank debacle, I’ll be happy with that! I have lost a total of two inches in my waist, though! I knew my waist was in there somewhere! Nice to start seeing it again!

Awesome, EPTR! 2 inches is great!

That’s great, EPTR!

MyPlate (and the scale) are showing me I eat lots more sodium than I realized, even though I don’t add it to anything. I am staying under my calories daily (well, except once), but the scale, not surprisingly, isn’t moving. Is high sodium that bad?

I don’t have a tape measure, but my clothes definitely feel looser. Happy with my progress, for sure.

I weighed this morning and I’m down another pound, 8 total since we started. My waist is down another inch, 2 total since I started measuring (fairly recently; couldn’t find my tape measure for the first few weeks).

I was expecting a hard week, because I was travelling for the last 3 days, with limited control over available food. Did OK the first day, but by the first evening I was hit with the runs, and so tired I went to bed at 8. Up a couple of times in the night with more stomach distress, hard time dragging myself out of bed in the morning. I was taking elevators that day rather than walk up one flight of stairs! Ate little the last two days, but not good choices for my current eating plan. I couldn’t face meat, eggs, salad, ate oatmeal for breakfast, soup and crackers for lunch, crackers and an apple for dinner, Coke consumption back up the last couple of days and lots of bubbly water. Oatmeal again yesterday, lunch was at a meeting catered by Panera. I chose half a tuna sandwich on a white roll, water, dinner was a tuna sandwich on white bread. I’m slowly recovering but still can’t face protein or my new good eating plan. Bubbly liquids and empty carbs seem to be getting my stomach back to normal.

NYmom,
I hope you feel better soon! It’s more important to eat what you can tolerate and make sure to stay hydrated than to worry about weight loss. Take care of yourself (and if that means having a little coke until you are on the mend, then do it).

NYMom - Yes, yes. Honestly, my drug of choice when I am under the weather is coke.

Hey, we can’t be perfect!!!

Yes, Coke does seem to settle my stomach, as does bubbly water. I am not able to tolerate the (unsweetened) iced tea that has become my Coke substitute. Plain toast for breakfast today, half a tuna sandwich on a white roll for lunch, I don’t even feel like eating dinner. I hope this is over soon!

NYMom;
Hope you are feeling better by now. I guess cola may settle the stomach, but I thought caffeine (iced tea/coke) is a stomach irritant? When you are up to more diet friendly foods, maybe a soft-boiled egg is a place to start. Nothing you have eaten should make you feel guilty. I mean it is not as though you have been gorging on cream puffs and swilling daiquiris!

Iced tea is bitter and harsh, at least it seems that way to me. I had celery and cucumber for dinner tonight, couldn’t face the chicken and fish, or even the other vegetables.

I don’t feel guilty, but I’m eager to get back to my normal state and my new eating plan. This is unusual for me, I am almost never sick.

Wait…those are bad things? :)

NYMom - hope you feel better soon! I always like lemon-lime soda when I’m sick but I think sugar is part of what settles me down so probably not the best thing to have on WLFD.

EPTR - great on the waistline!

Bad day yesterday; bad in the sense that we ate two meals out. Normally I have no life and just hang around home and can regulate what I eat. We made our first visit to Five Guys for lunch and I got a small burger and only ate the top of the bun, and tried to pick out only the small fries. We went to J Alexander’s for dinner with family and I had a small portion of my husband’s salad, a big chunk of prime rib, and less than half of the baked potato. And a bite of husband’s key lime pie. Oh yeah, and the lemon drop martini. I think I’ll wait until tomorrow to weigh in…fortunately back to no life again today so can eat carefully.
