Weight Loss for Dummies

Truthfully, I’m not sure what the optimal HR is either, but I remember when dh had an out patient surgery they wouldn’t release him until his HR was lower. It was reading in the high 90s. My old normal was 93 or 94, so I figured that wasn’t good.

Finally back down to where I was about 10 days ago. Not sure what caused the spike as I’v’e been exercising religiously and eating appropriately. I’ll attribute it to the new med, sodium and more muscle. Certainly, my clothes are looser and people have actually commented on the change in weight.

What I really love is how my ds2 is eating so much better (he’s started running x-country so I think the coach has been talking to them about nutrition). As is dh. I fear ds1 is a lost cause. :(

[Resting Heart Rate Chart](Resting Heart Rate Chart)

This link gives resting heart rates which depend on age and gender. In general, a rate in the 70’s is average. I am happy that even being 30 lbs overweight with metabolic syndrome, I have a resting heart rate in the 50’s and low blood pressure. My mother had multiple strokes as a result of her high blood pressure.

I just got a notice this week that my annual check-up for my diabetes research program is 12 weeks from now. I have only lost 12 lbs since I started my intensive weight loss program January 2, but 9 of those lbs have come since May. That slow start was extremely frustrating but I seem to be making faster progress now. And, from my last check-in, I am losing fat, not lean weight.

Take your resting heart rate before you get out of bed- pre coffee etc. Keep monitoring it. If you see a sudden jump, it is possible you are getting sick, dehydrated or over-tired.
My resting heart rate is about 52. Sitting in boring meetings it is about 56. When I was in the hospital giving birth, they thought there was something wrong with me since HR was in the 40s. They finally realized I was a runner. One of my extremely fit running friends who is 71 has a resting HR of 42. Amazing. Resting HR is an indicator of fitness. Max heart rate is not.

Just did my heart rate and it came out as 64 which is in the Good category. It used to be in the Below Average (around 80) category when I was a lot heavier. I guess that I’ll either need to lose more weight or get into better cardiovascular health to move into the Excellent category.

Hmm, I just took mine at my desk after a half-a-cup of coffee. Is there that much of a difference from getting out of bed?

Update 2: I added the heart rate charts to my Growly Notes application for quick reference and forwarded it to the kids. So the difference between resting and slightly active is 4 BPM?

i bought a heart rate monitor for extra motivation when I exercise. It has been fun to watch the variations depending on my activity and how quickly it reverts to my resting rate. I haven’t figured out yet how to set the monitor to determine how quickly it reverts which is another indicator of fitness but when I do intervals it seems to go down pretty quickly.

Just checked mine. It was 55. I know it was higher at my last Dr’s appt. in April. All the early morning walks must be paying off.

55 is in the athlete (best) category in the chart link that was posted earlier. I’d guess that your heart rate was very good even before the walks.

I had a 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries at lunch today - boy are they sweet. I’m pretty impressed by the fiber content too. Today has been 100% vegetarian (so far).

Right BCEagle, It has always been fairly low(low to mid 60’s). Haven’t checked by BP lately but used to be so low that I couldn’t give blood.

I think that I’m going to teach the rest of the family how to take their HR - my mother was a nurse and I worked in a hospital for four years and had some first aid training. I don’t recall whether I taught the rest of the family about how to find the HR though.

^^Show them how to find it on the ulnar artery ;)

H’s resting HR is 50 because he is a runner. The doctor said it could be a potential problem because it was too slow so he ordered an echogram(?) to make sure. Aparently it’s not always kosher to be too low either. However, hH received a call from the doctor to say H is ok. Just one more test to rule out things.

Some inspiration for us all…my MIL joined Curves, got to her goal weight and has stayed at it for several years. Well, now we know why…today marked her 800th visit to Curves! Wow! I’m so proud of her and very inspired to keep going.

Weighed in today and am down .5 lbs. Even better, I have so much energy!

Congrats, EPTR!

Weighed before and after a workout. Surprised it was a 2-pound difference.

Had a bad day yesterday. S had a gathering, I got into the chips, hotdogs, etc. I guess I had been doing better than I thought over the past couple of months - because today I feel like CRAP. Bloated, logie, just blecch. Back to low carb for me!!

Since this is a thread about low carb, potato seems to be a no no food. However, I found an interesting article about potato. The rise of Europe is fuel by potato.

I think that rice played a similar role in Asia.

I think that subsistence is quite a bit different than an environment where you have gross abundance.

I weighed before and after exercising today and it was exactly the same. It is so humid here. It’s like a greenhouse outside. I was certain I would have sweated off a few ounces.
I did eat breakfast after first weigh-in though.

I am participating in the Day of Debauchery & Gluttony, the counterevent to Gov. Rick Perry’s Day of Prayer and Fasting. I hope I don’t gain too much today. :D

Some days, I’m just hungrier than others and today was one of those. I didn’t eat anything too terrible but i did eat more than I have been lately.

Does anyone else have days like that? I even woke up hungry today.
