Weight Loss for Dummies

Speaking of scales: my digital WW scale is possessed. It’s in our bathroom, and I try to place it in the exact spot to weigh myself each AM because if I weigh myself in Spot #1, and then move the scale in a different direction, the second reading is occasionally the same, but more likely completely different. This AM, there was a 2 lb differential depending on scale placement. Since I obviously did not gain/lose 2 lbs in 5 seconds, what the heck is going on? Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone know how to fix this?

(BTW, to avoid deluding myself, I usually use the highest reading that makes the most sense compared to the highest reading of the previous day.)

Completely off topic, but does anyone also know how to fix the post count? Granted, I am a newbie to posting on CC, but I’m up to 10 or so and each time it still shows as just 1.

Posts in the cafe don’t count towards the post count.

MJS, I am thankful that the posts in the cafe don’t increase my count. ;)

We leave the scale in the same place so that it has the best chance of being accurate, but, really, I know that on any given day it’s a bit of a crapshoot. As long as the long-term trend is down, I’m good. Had my annual this a.m. Excited that I was 7 pounds lighter this year than last. She is ordering bloodwork. I’ll be curious to see how it looks compared to two years ago, the last time we did it. BP was an awesome 106/72.

Clothes are fitting much looser. I’m definitely losing in the torso, which is where I carry my weight. YEA!

MJS - My analog scale is the same way, plus I think it registers about three pounds light. If I lean forward, the needle goes up; backward it goes down. I move it to approximately the same spot in my closet doorway to weigh myself, so I can’t keep it in the same spot. I think we have had this scale for decades, so I keep it so that I can think about my weight in relative terms, whether last month (approximately) or ten or twenty years ago.

Just back from 2 weeks of vacation and am glad to be able to get back to my routine!

My WW’s scale worked perfectly for 2 weeks and then decided I lost 50 pounds and won’t change. It’s getting returned as soon as I can get myself to Targets. Maybe I’ll get a different brand though.

Well, heck, MathMom, that scale should be a keeper. You’re a diet success!

I tried out the “Skinnylicious” menu at Cheesecake factory and I was impressed. I had a skinny margarita (less than 150 cal.) It was pretty good but actually tasted a little too sweet. I also had the soft tacos with shrimp. They were delicious (under 560 cal.)

EPTR, shrimp tacos sounds soooo good!

Two positive things:

1) Lost two pounds this week, just like MyPlate said I would.

2) Tried on some pants that fit much better. You know how you can fit in pants that have a little stretch to them, but you know they don’t hang right? That’s what these were. They could be buttoned but were starting to look like capris from being stretched out, kwim?

Question: Does MyPlate eventually start taking weight loss into account and adjusting your calories, both intake and expenditure through exercise? Mine has stayed the same since starting, and I would have thought that there’d be a slight adjustment by now.

Congrats yds. I’m wearing some of those knit/spandexish workout shorts around the house and to bike/walk in. A few weeks ago DH referred to them as “butt-huggers”. This week I’ve noticed that they aren’t quite so huggy anymore…yah.

Yesterday for lunch I had a lettuce sandwich. I bought some romaine (not the bagged kind) big leaf lettuce and filled it with lean roast beef, sliced cucumbers, tomato slices and a squirt of horseradish sauce (20 cal./tsp) to hold it all together. I had some celery sticks to dip in hummus and a few pistachios for crunch as sides. It was really good and filling.

YDS, I think you have to every once in awhile adjust your current weight yourself (through your account) - then the calories will adjust.

PackMom, I have been meaning to create exactly what you created!!! Putting that on my lunch list for this weekend!

I’ve done that. But maybe the weight lost since I started MyPlate isn’t consequential enough? While I’ve lost 12.5 pounds, some of that was before I started using MyPlate. I can’t remember how much of that was since using MP.

My Plate as actually adjusted itself more than I can cope with now. I wish there were a pound every other week setting because I am really not very interested in only eating 1200 calories a day. I know there’s a way I can just plug in the calories I want to eat, but I am too lazy to do it! Those red bars do inspire me to go out and walk to make up for the extra 100 or so calories I need to eat to be happy.

I’ve lost 8 pounds since the start of this thread, and 28 since the start of the other thread.

That’s fantastic, Mathmom! Congratulations!

Congrats, mathmom!

Just for curiousity, ds2 and I did how many calories he can eat. He’s 16 and with light activity as his “normal” activity level, he could eat more than 2,400. And on cross-country days he can eat more than 3,500 calories! Oh, to have the metabolism of a 16yo boy.

So brought DH home today with his new hip - he did “great” (I think if the operation doesn’t go wrong it’s always great!). Apparently he was one of the youngest and most fit ortho patients that had been seen on the ward in some time! He had a great corner room on the 14th floor with glimpses of Lake Michigan and a teeny bit of the Navy Pier ferris wheel.

My meals worked out OK (got cottage cheese, fruit, and a corn muffin from the cafeteria one day, and the fruit and cheese Starbucks bistro box the other). I also took a walk each day, not to mention the amount of walking just to get around the hospital (Northwester Memorial, for those familiar with Chicago).

My official Friday weigh-in showed me down a pound from last week, total 10.6 since I joined this thread two months ago. I was up slightly after last weekend but seem to have made up for it. This progress is fine with me!

That’s great, Marilyn! Glad your H is doing well, too!

Wonderful, Marilyn! Good news all the way around!

Marilyn, glad your H is doing well.
I am admitting I have had a very bad week. I have gone carb wild. I am once again reminded that I really need to stay away from them. Eat one and I start tumbling downhill. I made the mistake of letting my D buy Pop Tarts at Costco. She was going on a trip and wanted them for a late night snack. We could have bought one regular size box at the grocery store and they would have not been in the house. I have had a pack each night the last two nights. And we still have almost 3 double boxes in the cupboard. My H also bought fresh bagels for the trip (I was not going on this trip). He felt he was being nice by buying extra for S and I to have at home. So I confess that tonight I had an onion bagel toasted with real butter and a blueberry pop tart!
