Weight Loss for Dummies

OK, OK, I did skip mentioning the stop at Garrett’s for caramel corn! But I felt I earned it and have been very careful not to eat too much. It’s one of my guilty pleasures.

It is much easier to avoid temptation without DS around. I always claimed that I bought the Pillsbury Toaster Pastries for him (wink, wink). I guess there’s a reason why my weight just kept creeping up year by year…

Mom60,
Pop Tarts are my evil nemesis. I CANNOT have them anywhere near me and if they are I eat all of them…in one sitting. I don’t know what it is about them but I have no self control around them. You poor thing. I’m sorry someone put them in your vicinity. You are NOT to blame!

I have had a bad week too. I was down about 5 lbs, total, as of last weekend. Weighed in again mid week and was up two lbs! There has been a little icecream in the mix the last week or so. I guess I was getting overly confident.

Have been going to the movies a good bit lately and I must have something to munch on while watching; carrot sticks just aren’t going to cut it! Any suggestions for a good movie treat? My friend brings in her own air popped popcorn in a single serving bag which works for her. I have done Twizzlers before as I can hold one and take really small bites to make them last longer, but it still is all sugar, so empty calories. Junior Mints aren’t terrible, but we seem to finish them before the actual movie starts!

BTW, I do not buy at the theater, I always bring treats from home or from on sale at the drug store. I can not deal with the price of movie candy.

Snowball, how about taking some nuts in a zip-lock bag? Eat them slowly. You get the crunch and saltiness without the carbs.

LOL at all the true confessions! I am having a Pop Tart craving now because of all this talk.

I made a butterscotch cake last night at the kids’ insistence and had a piece, but I was able to budget it in by having a really small dinner, which probably explains why I’m STARVING today. This could get ugly. ;)

ETA: I like the single-serving popcorn idea. We always just take water bottles.

True confession (though I haven’t done it in awhile…) - a favorite night time treat. A toasted poptart spread with lots of butter - melts and oozes right in!

How about a homemade trail mix for the movies - some dried fruit, whole grain cereal or pretzels, just enough chocolate (mini m and m’s or mini chocolate chips) for sweetness, nuts - that kind of thing. And a bottle of water. :)

EPTR, should you feel guilty about the ice cream??? Seriously, are you never going to eat ice cream for the rest of your days? That’s why I feel you need to include ALL foods in your weekly diet - all foods that you want to eat, at least on occasion. Now if you had a 3 scoop sundae with double hot fudge and extra whipped cream we’ve got a problem here, but you will never be able to maintain weight loss if you can’t add in some occasional treats.

IMO it’s better to lose the weight more slowly - and still be able to live and eat “normally”. And normally for me is going to include some indulgences each week - at reasonable sizes.

abasket, that’s a great idea, although there might be more M&M’s in the mix than the healthier foods!! My sister always keeps a bowl of mix by her sofa, and whenever we are there my husband picks out all the M&M :)

BTW, for those that use nuts for your snack, Emerald makes a nice selection of flavored nuts in their on the go canisters. The favorite at our house right now is the sweet and salty mixed nut blend (dark chocolate peanut butter,) but the cocoa roast almonds were a hit also. There are also cinnamon roast almonds and other sweet and salty flavors. That bit of sugar hits the spot for those with a sweet tooth like my husband!

Thanks everyone for not making me feel bad about the pop tarts. I made myself get on the scale this morning. Thankfully I have maintained my weight. I am headed out to the movies this afternoon and after the movie a meal with my friend. I am hoping that by weighing myself it will give me the power to make smart meal decisions this afternoon. I am having a bowl of plain oatmeal now and hopefully that will keep me from eating during the movie.
Snowball- that sweet and salty nut blend sounds delicious. I find I definitely crave salty food. Dark chocolate with salty nuts or dark chocolate with pretzels. Yum.
I think we are mainly women on this thread- I am noticing how much hormones play a role in my cravings. I had an issue that confused my hormones and I did not have a period for almost 6 months. Since the surgery my remaining ovary seems to have fired back up. Since getting my period the last two months I have noticed the salty cravings have come back full strength.

*I am noticing how much hormones play a role in my cravings. *

Completely.
I have an H who weighs the same as he did in high school- loves typical junky / high fat food ( steaks/potato chips/ice cream).
At least we don’t usually have snacks around, but I do have a week period where I eat all the sugar I can find- which of course makes it worse.

I can’t eat wheat & I do pretty good with that, but then that makes me feel like I am * entitled* to have ice cream!

I am maintaining but haven’t lost for the past 2-3 weeks. I’m not surprised, because the combination of two trips and one stomach issue that lasted a good 5 days has me eating too many carbs and not enough vegetables and proteins. The amounts I’m eating are still fine, but the composition is not what it should be, and it is making a difference. The worst thing is that I had a few days of deep depression. I do think this is related to bad carbs. I am leaving in 4 days for a 10-day trip, so it will be a while before I get back to my new eating plan. I should have somewhat more control over what I eat on this vacation than I do on business trips.

Good for you, mathmom and Marilyn!

Hang in there, NYmom. Im on vacation, too and it is so hard. I haven’t lost any weight in a couple of weeks and even went up a couple. We don’t have to do this overnight.

About movie snacks: I was clicking around on the WW site the other day. If you go to Community, click around in there, and somewhere put in snacks as a search term, you will get to a giant list of thread links about snacks. Near the top are two about movie snacks (and the pros/cons of the morals of sneaking them in, but that’s a whole 'nother story – suffice it to say that most of the posters were definitely sneakers as am I). Nothing none of you don’t already know about, but you get a whole list of ideas all in one place.

I may have said this earlier, but I’ve become a big fan of chocolate cheerios. I haven’t looked at the stats, so can’t say for sure, but cheerios are supposed to somehow be good for you (we feed them to babies, right?), and the little bit of chocolate flavor does wonders in nipping the craving for “real” chocolate. Put some in a ziplock, and enjoy the show! Or, mix them in with some popcorn. There’s your crunchy, salty, and sweet, all in one wonderful bag.

I got curious, so I just looked at the choc cheerios box for the stats: Serving size =
3/4 C = 100 cals, 1.5 grams fat, 22 grams carbs, 2 grams fiber, 170 mg sodium.

Party this weekend = weight gain on Monday. I didn’t eat as much as I would have normally but way too much for what I’m “supposed” to be eating.

Horse, where are you? I need to hop back on!

Back from a week at the beach and up 2.5 lbs. Yikes! Oh well, it could be a lot worse. Send that horse my way, Youdon’tsay, I need to hop back in the saddle again too.

Haha - I think maybe we corral a bunch of horses!!!

I think I’m/we’re dealing with end of summer, trying to get in last jaunts with our kids, neighbors and ice cream shops!!! I am saddened about the end of summer, but also know that my exercise and eating regime improves when all of our schedules get back to “normal”. :)

I’ve noticed that even if I stay within my calorie limits I need to eat the right kind of food. I had done a good job of curbing the craving for weeks but in the past week it’s been a battle because I’m eating “bad” foods and that makes me want to eat more bad food. Also, I’ve been doing lots of baking for various parties and events and I’ve been sneaking more tastes, which has brought back the cravings. Argh. And I’ve got four more cakes to bake this week!

I gave back 2 of the original lbs I lost, but I really think it’s the lack of exercise. Every time I think I’m getting back on track something comes up, not the least of which is my shoulder issue. I’m trying to get to the PT which should help, and give some structure to my rehab. Goal for this week is not to sample everything I’m making for my daughter’s delayed graduation party this weekend.

That’s exactly my situation, Youdon’tsay. I have been eating the right amount of calories, but not always the right foods, and it has profound effects on my mood and energy.
