As of now I’ve taken 10 college classes, and my GPA is still a 4.1. I got a B in one college class and it’s my only B, why is my WGPA not budging?
The impact of weighting is diluted by the volume of classes.
The vast majority of schools will use your unweighted GPA or their own weighting formula anyway.
Sorry, does this mean there’s too many regular classes at 4.0 to offset the GPA?
The more classes you have of any kind, weight impacting or not, the less the impact of the extra weight will be. There are more courses for the weighting to be spread over.
At some high schools…those college course grades are NOT weighted. AP courses are, honors courses are…but college course grades are not. Some high schools don’t include college courses (not DE, but regular college courses) in your GPA…at.all.
I wouldn’t worry about this. When you apply to college, the adcoms will receive your transcripts from the college and /or it will be noted on your HS transcript. They will see that you have taken college courses.
Different high schools in the USA compute weighted GPA in wildly different ways. This makes it pretty much useless to compare weighted GPA numbers from one high school compared to some other high school.
University admissions will look at your actual grades (which in your case seems to include a lot of A’s and not much else – which makes it quite easy to evaluate!), and will also look at what classes you have taken.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Make sure that you apply to safeties. Look for a good fit in colleges and universities. Keep your budget in mind.
It looks to me as if you are doing very well. Good job!
By the way, I have a daughter who like you got one single B when she was in high school. I was thrilled when she got the B (but I did not tell her this). It made the point that you do not need to be perfect. She was still 5 for 5 in university admissions. I expect that you too are likely to do well (but still make sure that you apply to safeties).
B grade in CIS-1? Isn’t that the class which teaches you what a computer is? Did you have trouble finding the power switch?
Kidding aside, your transcript is very solid. Like others have said, what your HS put as GPA is irrelavent. Schools (at least UC/CSU) will recalculate using their own formula. My “rough” Excel spread sheet puts your fully weighted GPA above 4.5. Along with your stat/BG info (from other posts) you should be a very competitive applicant for UC/CSU and I look forward to reading your success next March.
It depends on your high school’s weighting system, which differs from that of other high schools and colleges that recalculate.
Your high school’s relatively light weighting would be disadvantageous at Colleges that use weighted HS GPA at face value .
Haha, I signed up for the class thinking it’d be something like that! No, it was just teaching me how to use Microsoft Office. I didn’t know how to use Canvas and it was my first time, I found out that I’d done none of the quizzes and only the basic assignments. I don’t know how I got a B, but I’m not complaining. Thank you so much for your kind words!
Yeah, that happens. Especially when the prof uses MathLab (or something similar) that doesn’t link back to to Canvas. S24 took a C++ class and didn’t know HW was not listed. Spent last 4 weeks catching up and barely scrapped by because prof kept docking points for “late” work, even though he reached out and asked how come there is no HM listed.
Your chance for Ivy will depend largely on your DSAT score (hope you did well). But for UC/CSU the only thing missing is being 1st gen (didn’t see that in your demo list) and “zipcode.” With good PIQ essays, your application checks every box in my book.
Went back to read your original “Chance Me” post. Did/Do you have a paying job? If you don’t then you should consider getting one.
I’m taking the DSAT June 1, super nervous but I hope I do well. I’m working on getting a job right now. I’ve tried applying to a lot online, I think it’s useless and I’ll start going in-person to ask. I can’t really afford the gas to drive to a job every day, so I’m looking for something walkable and hopefully I’ll have the motivation to actually walk there every day. Kinda preoccupied with the SAT right now but when it’s over I’ll put my all into getting a job.
Two of mine got their only B in honors English freshman year (all 5 of mine got a B in that class). One of them is a rising senior in college and it’s still her only B.
High school weigh differently, one of mine with one B took 9 AP classes, and most of the rest were honors, W4.2.
Even if you work FastFood, it’s about the experience and not the title or pay. You don’t need anything fancy. It’s easy to fall into an “elitism” trap.
My son did IT work, but really, he just talked about being a glorified handman for people with money on his essays.
Walking to a job provides a lot of material for your essays… Just saying.
Are you sure the college classes are weighted? I think it’s typical for high schools to weight AP and honors classes, but not DE/concurrent enrollment classes. Your transcript looks great, many colleges have their own weighting systems anyway, and any Admissions Officer can take a look at your transcript and get a sense of how well you’ve been doing.
Oh I think you’re right! The legend at the bottom shows + for weighted classes and there’s no + next to the college courses. I think that’s a bit weird but I guess it’s okay if recalculated during admissions regardless
Good news about the working world- you wake up one day and aren’t motivated to show up for work? Maybe your boss gives you a second chance. Do it twice? Motivation won’t be an issue because you’ll be unemployed.
It’s not like school where the worst thing that could happen is you get a B and not an A because you weren’t motivated to study.
I don’t know if I’m reading your tone wrong, forgive me, but I don’t think the snark was necessary. I think I’m allowed to be a bit unmotivated considering I have to cook lunch and dinner for my family, take classes and do my work, and then walk in blistering California heat to work every day and come back. This sounds regular for an adult maybe, but I’m a kid who hasn’t gone through any of this.
I’m not being snarky at all. And you have a lot of responsibility-- hugs to you for being a good family member and reliable resource for the people who love you.
I am pointing out that you will not need to motivate yourself. You’ll either get to work or you won’t. And if your family is willing to have a sit down to discuss ways of lessening your load over the next few months, that might be worth the time. They don’t want you to burn out- and YOU don’t want you to burn out.
Hugs.
If you are working you will get paid, and be able to pay for gas.
