Hello. I have a question on how UTK calculates WGPA. Understand the additional weighting for Honors/AP/DE however our High School has Core, Accelerated (+0.5) and Honors/AP (+1.0). Many of the courses especially outside of Math and English do not have Honors/AP options until Junior or Senior year and Accelerated is the highest available. I see that you can select “Accelerated” in the SRAR as the Class Level but does anyone know if this translates into an additional weighting for WGPA? Thanks!
Based on First-Year Students | Undergraduate Admissions, looks like UTK uses:
- honors = +0.5
- AP, IB, college = +1.0
- everything else = no weight
Not sure if you have been on a UTK tour, but the info session was very informative. They have their 16 academic requirements (4 years English, 3 years Science etc) and those are the only classes they consider for their core GPA. For example, they ask for: 1 European history, world history, or world geography. If you took World History and AP Human Geography, they would consider whichever one is more advantageous for you, not an average of both.
Not sure this answers your question directly but my kid has “dual credit” classes in high school, and her HS adds an additional .5 to those grades, just like Accelerated. I am not sure (still, after trying to find out) how and if UTK uses that DC/DU info from SRAR. But my kid’s UTK-calculated UTK GPA went up .14 from her HS GPA.
I also noticed that UTK uses a Fine Arts class to calculate core GPA whereas other schools may not. I think that helped my kid as well. Just sharing all this as those may be variables in the UTK core GPA calculation as well.
