Weighted vs unweighted vs UC GPA

Hi CC,

This is my first post on CC, not sure if I’m putting this in the right place…

I’m going to be a high school senior (class of 2017). This past year, I took 6 AP classes and got my first B in high school. My unweighted GPA went from a 4.0 down to a 3.9744, dropping my class rank in that category from 1 to 46. I go to a typical US public school, class size around 670 kids. I’ve taken 8 AP courses overall and taking 5 more this upcoming year. My weighted GPA is 4.3846 and my class rank for that is 4 and my UC GPA is 4.6818, class rank 2. The rank 46 makes me look really bad and I was just wondering if colleges are going to look at that very closely compared to my UC or weighted GPA and rank.

Thank you!!

UC’s do no consider rank other than for UC ELC Eligibility (top 9% of your HS Class or State). Also most UC’s use the capped weighted UC GPA not the uncapped weighted (only UCB/UCLA). You will not be rejected from any UC for having 1 B.

@Gumbymom Thank you!! That makes me feel a lot better. What about privates? Like Harvey Mudd? Or Pomona?

You can look up the common data set for each school of interest. Look at section C7 to see if class rank is considered or not. Here is a link for Pomona College: https://www.pomona.edu/sites/default/files/cds-2015-2016.pdf
