I am filling out an application for a safety and they have a question asking where else I am applying followed by another one asking me to rank them among my choices. Is this even an ethical thing to ask? It would be totally silly to tell them they are #1 on my list, but they got some kind of way inflated rating in Princeton Review for the department I am applying for so I am thinking about inflating their position to like #2 or 3. Can I get in trouble for doing that?

It is unethical of them to ask, and hopefully whatever you write there does not hurt you. You can’t get in trouble for any answer - you are allowed to change your mind about your “rankings”, so write whatever you feel like on that one.

If you like, write down schools that are similar but less selective than the school you are applying to. They did not say you had to list all of your choices. I did that, although only one school asked the question.

Hope this helps. :)

you could always cluster your schools - putting them in two or three groups rather than an individual ranking.
