Weird combination

My skill set and test scores align with a mathematics and science background, but my ECs have a liberal arts themes, as do my passions. Should I find a math/science related hobby/passion and pursue it for the sake of a pointed resume? Or should I not mind much attention to this pseudo-conflict?

For a quick gauge of the selective was of schools I plan on applying to, my range currently consists of schools with acceptance rates in the 20-45% range, most of my top choices are around 30%

My D has the same thing and it was not an issue. In HS she was science/math kid who did orchestra/theater/literary journal/community service as her ECs. Now she is a very happy college student studying science and is still involved in orchestra and theater on campus. I don’t think it ever came up as an issue in her college interviews or acceptances (she got into her top choice school). I wouldn’t worry about it and just present yourself as a well rounded individual.

The latter – pay no attention to the pseudo-conflict. Many people have differing interests professionally and personally. Otherwise there would be no difference between “work” and “play”.

Don’t pay any attention to the conflict. I’m pursuing Biochemistry/Pharmacy and didn’t have any STEM EC’s. I enjoy writing and other hobbies/EC’s in that area too. The pseudo-conflict also shows that you’re not a one-sided applicant. It shows you’re a person with REAL interests and passions.

Apply to Allegheny; they live for students like you!

My son (HS junior) is planning to major in math and minor in film studies.

As long as you are involved and preferably in a leadership role, you will be fine.

Don’t try to pad your cv! it is completely a pseudo conflict. The whole point of a liberal arts education is that you can explore and develop your interests and strengths as a well rounded person. Our D is a physics major, takes literature classes and is actively involved in the drama department- and is considered a very typical student at her college. Just find the college that speaks to all the parts of you.
