Weird - Home phone rang, Caller ID display showed our own phone # and name

This has happened before. Regular old landline home phone. The caller ID display showed my husband’s name and the phone number of this same landline.

Have others had this happen to them?
How do the spammers do this, and should they be allowed to do it?

Obviously you can’t dial your own number from that same number. It kind of reminds me of those old horror movies (way before the cell phone) involving a babysitter - “Oh my god, he’s calling from INSIDE THE HOUSE!!”

Oops, I meant to say you can’t CALL your own number, not dial it. Haven’t done it for a while, but from what I remember, when you dial it you get a busy signal, which makes sense.

That has happened both to me and my parents! No idea why or what’s going on!

Scammers.
Here’s an article for you to read;

Thanks for the article. I figured it was spammers/scammers/whatever you wanna call the scum that call my number way too often.
I’m smart enough not to answer it, and I never pick up the phone unless it is someone I know, or if they leave a message that tells me it is someone I want to speak with. But I bet plenty of people do fall for it.

First started seeing this about 18 months ago.

I don’t pick up phone any more. It’s there for emergency or when we need to dial out. Too many scams. If it’s for real, people will leave phone message and I get back to them.

We’ve had this happen too. I only answer calls from numbers I recognize (that could actually have called my landline). If someone is trying to legitimately reach me and I don’t pick up, they can leave a message.

When I see a number from a different area code that I don’t recognize, I hit “Talk” and then “Off.”

I think I started a thread about this last year; it was very creepy when it happened to us, but luckily, it hasn’t happened again since.

What! I’m so glad to have a reason behind this. I got a phone call from my own landline recently. Curious, I answered and heard only silence. It freaked me out because on our landline you actually can dial your own number ( I have used it to call my son upstairs). It will ring a couple of times before telling you that you have dialed your own number. My imagination had me thinking Phil(the imaginary person who lives in the attic and gets blamed for everything no one takes responsibility for) was real.

Total scam. It does get your attention. What happened to the do not call list? It used to work. I am also finding that some scammers are using “local” area code and prefixes, which also can make people more likely to pick up. I don’t answer calls unless I recognize the number.

Am I the only one old enough to remember that old horror movie line? :slight_smile:

I’ve completely given up on answering the home phone. It’s quite funny when one of our neighbors call, because I hear this grumbling, “oh no they don’t answer the phone, where’s the cell phone number…” it usually goes on long enough I can pick up the phone. I’ve told them to use the cell, but they won’t do it.

I’ve gotten this scam too - it’s creepy, but I would never answer it though I have to admit I wonder what sort of scammer thinks you’d believe anything they said coming from your own number.

@MomCat2, I remember it too!

This happens to us frequently. Usually it’s when our 13-year-old has been on the phone, clicking back and forth on the call waiting with his buddies. He gets impatient sometimes and will dial (or hit other buttons) before the dial tone sounds. No spammers, just impatient teenager. :slight_smile:

We don’t have caller ID.

Thanks… I can pretty much count on having nightmares tonight. :open_mouth:

We got caller ID 4 months ago and it’s been great. I was so tired of answering robo-calls. Now I can see how few of the calls that come into my house are calls I actually care to receive, and, most importantly, I can ignore them.
