Weird situation, zero idea of my options

Hi guys! New here, don’t know where else to go for advice and this site looks pretty useful :)

So, I have a pretty a weird situation. I am a freshman at a small LAC that has… an interesting grade system. When I visited the school last year I was told that it was virtually impossible to make a 4.0 and that 4.0’s usually translated on this school’s transcripts as 3.6’s. They told me this was not a problem for grad school, however, since the college sends a note with everyone’s transcript explaining this GPA nonsense. Unfortunately, their unique grading system has left me in a bit of a bind when it comes to knowing what my options are for transferring. They also typically do not give out grades for major assignments, so I have only a very vague notion of how well I am doing in my classes.

I feel like I can’t even start thinking about where I want to transfer to because I have no idea what’s in my range. I go to a somewhat reputable school now, I seem to be doing fine in my classes, and I was an average high school student (3.4 UW GPA / 3.74 W I think, 2090 SAT). That’s… all I have to go on.

I am definitely looking at University of Washington and feel confident I can get in there. I am also thinking of Rice and maybe some big city schools, but other than that I’m clueless. All I know is that I am a little desperate to leave, haha. I don’t really fit in here at all and I am beginning to feel that another school might be better suited to my academic needs as well.

Do you have a particular part of the country you want to be in, and you looking for large universities rather than LACs?

Hmm… I don’t really care where I am in the country as long as it is not in the Midwest or the South (Rice is the exception). I definitely would prefer to be in or very, very close to a big city. Right now I am about 40 min to an hour away from the city by bus, which I’m not very keen on especially considering my college touts being “in the city.” But it’s possible that this is only a big deal for me because I don’t really like hanging around my college, so I am open to looking at a few schools not in the city as well.

I don’t know that I want to go to a super large university (though maybe NYU if I have a chance), but I just would really like to be at a larger school than I am at now (which is about ~1400 students).

So… um… anyone? I hate to be obnoxious, but I’m in kind of a rut here and I really can’t reference any other threads to see what my chances are anywhere since my situation is so funky. So any help would be super appreciated!

Your hs gpa still matters a lot, so mostly go by that and how you think you’re doing (you have to send a mid-semester report to some schools, so go by that).
