Weird timing from UNC-CH

So now, two weeks AFTER my son sent his acceptance and deposit to Tulane and two weeks after he sent his rejection notice to UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill sends him notice that he has a laptop grant as well as a grant of over $5K?! (This is significant $$ because we are in-state, so Chapel Hill comes cheap for us.)

It isn’t that he wants to change his mind. But couldn’t they have told us this before the day before “heavy decision day”?

It sure seems like they missed an opportunity to win over your son.

It is weird, that’s for sure. Possibly, though, they first offered these things to another student who turned them down, and so this made the funding available to your son – though too late.

That did occur to me, especially since HE turned down a nearly full ride from another UNC very early so that they COULD offer it to someone else. Still, so late–I wonder that they bothered to send the offer at all. They must know what mail service is like here in the sticks of their own state. (It took five days to travel what is a four-hour car ride.)

Perhaps they decided that by sending this, they might get your son to change his mind, and come anyway.

Ditto here. Notification of 10K after S had decided to accept Notre Dame. I think that is what one can expect from a big state institution.

ctymomteacher- thanks for the info. Son #2, a junior, will also be applying to Carolina next year and as that we are in-state as well, it could be a something that might happen again to him.

And yes you are right, a $5K grant would make Carolina very affordable, since tution is about $4200 and then room/board is very reasonable…a nice discount!!!
