Hi, everyone, I am an incoming freshman to Choate as well. I was wondering whether we are supposed to be able to see our dorms on the directory? Because I thought we would only know until we get to registration.
@itcannotbetrue I got placed into Honors Calculus AB!
Congrats! I am quite excited for classes to start soon.
Congrats, @CavsFan2003! Awesome start. Hope you have an easy move in day!
Hi! So, can people that are applying to Choate ask questions? If so…
What is your favorite thing about Choate? And may you please describe a typical school day?
I’ve gone to the Summer Program twice, but it’s not really enough to tell me what it’s like during the school year.
And if I wasn’t supposed to ask questions here, I apologize!
@ursulaisnotevil Hi! Ofc those who are applying to choate can ask questions here haha. My favorite thing about Choate was the people, who come from all over the world and are some of my closest friends even after I have left, as well as the Environmental Immersion Program, where I got to live at the KEC my junior year. If you haven’t done so already, you should definitely check out Choate’s signature programs. These programs are truly unmatched by any other school, and they will provide you with the type of experiential and intensive learning that I believe you are looking for at a school.
A typical school day is really dependent on what your course schedule looks like. Choate operates using a block schedule, which means that each class is about 70 minutes long. Most freshman start off by taking five classes, which will include a language, most likely physics (although that is dependent on your science background), a math, freshman english, and an elective course of your choosing. Most freshman choose to use the elective course as an opportunity to fulfill a graduation requirement. An example of a typical freshman elective course would be Contemporary Issues, Peace and Justice, or World Religions.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
As M10 decisions come around, new Choate students/those considering Choate are welcome to ask any questions!
@Penguins75 Thanks so much! And it turns out I’ll be attending Choate next year!
By the way, does this count as a Choate 2024 thread?
Hi, I was accepted in Choate, and I hope to be attending there next year (if I can convince my parents). I would love to hear about what kids did on the weekends and more about the social scene. To me, a fun social scene is crucial, and I would like to hear more about are the girls nice/ fun and about the guys too. Were you able to make great friends? Also, do people ever go to NY on the weekends? Please let me know
@4student4 Hi! I’d love to see you at Choate next year. It heavily depends on the student for what they do on weekends, but the campus is pretty lively. Friday and Saturday nights the SAC will be pretty full, and events (SAC dances, trivia nights, game shows, movie showings, etc.) are very common. I spent a lot of time in the game room playing Smash this year; that is definitely alive and well. It’s hard to really describe the social scene here. I’ve had loads of fun, but it definitely depends person to person. It’s really easy to go with friends into town and there are pretty frequent shuttles to the movies/wherever you want to go. Most people I’ve met at Choate are nice, but it is high school. Not everyone here is super friendly, but I’d definitely say the large majority of both guys and girls are. People do go to NY on weekends more than you’d expect. I’ve only been 3 times this year, but it’s pretty easy to get there. You just have to walk about a mile downhill to the train station and hop on board. Definitely more people go to New Haven than New York, though.
