Welcome New Choaties!

@prepschoolhopes Does Choate use any assignment and grade system like canvas?

@neuroticmama – Yes, Choate does use online assignment and grading systems like Canvas. However, the degree to which it is used varies from teacher to teacher.

As for lodging, we always stay at the Fairfield Marriot. We’ve found it to be clean and the breakfast to be decent. Not luxurious, but it works for our Marriott points!

*Sorry, Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites

Yes. Actually we do use canvas. Some teachers use dropbox too. @neuroticmama

How much spending money is enough, but not too much monthly to send students off with for extras?

@neuroticmama There is a B&B right next to campus, called the The Victorian Inn. Cute from the outside, for sure. Never been inside. We stayed at Homewood Suites when we first moved to CT, clean and comfy, about 12 minutes from campus.

So at the beginning of the school year they tell you that for the first month you should put into their account $800, and I recommend that you do this simply because books are expensive and will eat away at that money leaving them with about $350. Then a lot of that money will be used to buy things that they need and forget to get, that the of thing and then the rest will be spending money. I would say $200 a month or $175 a month is a good amount for spending money during the regular school year because people tend to blow through $100 on food or going out for food, and then the other $75 or $100 will be like safety money, just incase they need to buy anything that is necessary. Of course it carries from kid to kid in that some like to spend a lot of money whereas other use their money sparingly. It all depends. I would talk to your child about how much money they should be spending and what they can spend their money on. @neuroticmama

Books are upwards of $600 or so, so plan on that. Unless you have FA, which can give you kid some free books, which are on loan from school. Those go fast, though, so do not delay in getting to book store. As soon as you get schedule, head over!

Hmm… ???

Current Choaties, which schools did you decide between before choosing Choate?

I was choosing between Kent and Choate. I only applied to three schools.

@AceNtheHole ^^ sorry I forgot to tag you in it

@Penguins75 thank you.

Great topic, thanks for starting!

Hey y’all! Comment on how you’re revisit day went and ask any questions that you still might have!

What’s the ETA on the new building where the old math building was? Is the new thing gonna be a student center? Do they still use the old gym building as the student center, the one by the pool? What’s gonna happen with that, if anything?

@GnarWhail The new building that is replacing the old math building is the new student activities center . It will probably be done by 2017. I have no idea what the old SAC is going to turn into.

Revisit day was fabulous. My daughter chose Choate!

My son will be attending Choate in the fall…really simple question I think to the parents out there…When you first moved your child into the dorm…how much did you take with you? Did you do most of your shopping at the Walmart? How much time did you spend on campus when you were getting them settled in? Just trying to get some information on the first overall experience when you arrived on campus for the first time? Thanks in advance.

Hi @NewPlaces20 – less is more for move in. We literally had a large duffle, a carry-on, and four boxes. That being said my son’s (ex!) roommate moved in with 16 boxes, including a movie screen. That was pretty ridiculous!

I would recommend bedding, a few organizational items for desktop and drawers, adhesive hooks, adhesive strips, A FAN (you Will Not be able to find these at Walmart at the beginning of September!), a shower caddy, an extra gym bag, toiletries, a floor lamp, and clothes to get through parent’s weekend in late October( We took home his summer clothes at that point and brought him a coat and other Fall/winter items to get him through the holiday break).

I hope that his helps!
