I am an international student living in US. I am asian, female. I recently got accepted to Wellesley and Duke. I also asked for a lot of financial aid so I was surprised that I got in. Wellesley gave me 35000 per year while I am still waiting to hear from Duke. I am planning to major in pre-med. Which one should I go to if I were considering financial aid and if I didn’t need to worry about it? :(I need your help guys!!! thanks

DuKe. You will stand out (in a good way!)

O_O Omg. Wish I was in your shoes. Wellesley and Duke were my closely contested #1, with Wellesley slightly above Duke cause it’s in Boston. 35k from Wellesley?! You only have to pay 5k or so a year! That’s only 20k of debt! I think it’s better for you to go to Wellesley (yes, I might be slightly biased). I don’t think it’s worth incurring a lot of debt as an undergraduate student.
But if Duke gives you as much financial aid, then it’s worth considering Duke. It’s technically ranked really high (#5 on NewsWeek’s Best National Universities) and my goal in life is to be able to get into Duke’s medical school or so.

And also, if you’re planning to go to a medical school, you get a big boost in your “competitive-ness” score if you’re in the same state as the medical school you want to go to. So if you want to go to Harvard Medical School, being that Wellesley is in the same state, you’d get an advantage over out-of-state kids when applying to Harvard Med School.

Heh, just trying to offer a “long-term” view.

dang, $35K per year at wellesley??!!! i would take it in a heartbeat!

DEFINITELY Wellesley. Because it’s awesome ;)

Unless you especially like the blue-blood football culture? Not to stereotype here, but as an asian female myself, that doesn’t seem like a big enough reason to ditch 35k for most of us, does it =P

both are amazing…

Well, Harvard Medical School is great. I know if I go Wellesley I will be able to take classes at Harvard and MIT. At the same time, Duke has one of the best medical schools in the country. I think that if I go Duke and do well then I’ll have chance to be admitted to Duke Medical School since on average they take more people from Duke than any other universities. I really love both schools. It’s really hard:(

Go to wellesley so you can come to MIT parties and hang with me =D

Wellesly, unless you’re a heterosexual.

well i’m still waiting to hear from duke on how much money they’ll give me. If they gave me approximately the same amount, where would I choose? and which school is better generally?

I would go Duke if you get similar aid.

Wellesley with that much money is a great choice. Do well there, and you have a great shot at Duke med school. They accept a lot of Duke grads because a lot apply; they don’t really favor them. If Duke gives you similar aid, you’ll have to decide which is the better fit for you; they’re very different.

I would go with Wellesley considering how much money they gave you. Even money issues aside, I just think Wellesley’s location, viscinity to other colleges, surrounding cities, is an added bonus.

Ok so the situation completely changed. I just received financial aid information from duke and I got 36K from duke next year. Now it’s really really hard for me to decide. I have visited both schools. I really love both schools. :(Which school do you guys think that I should go? Thanks guys for the advice.

unless Duke matches it up, then goto wellesly… also Duke is smack in NC… which iosnt that great vs. Boston…

Seeing as Duke more than matched it, definitely DUKE.

looks like my post was at the same time… def. Duke…

Both are fine schools and will offer you an excellent education. The difference would be in social atmosphere, climate, regional culture. If you enjoy close friendships with women and lots of personal attention from profs and prefer a quieter, less wild campus atmosphere–choose Wellesley. If you want to see men around on an everyday basis and have more partying opportunities right on your own campus, choose Duke.
Also it is likely you will find a larger Asian community in the Boston area but much colder winters than in North Carolina.

I would say Duke, a friend of mine went to Wellesley and transferred out after the first year.

I want strong academic environments. i am really interested in the pre-med programs at both schools. I am not sure which school is better for pre-med. I have visited both schools and I love both schools environments. One more thing that I am curious about but its definitely not a deciding point. Which school is better prestige wise? Or academics?
