We are pretty much up on the concrete details etc. I think what I’m seeking here is more a gut reaction from parents who have actually visited or have children who have spent time in both. D is going with her mother to the open houses and I have told her to go with which ever seems to fit her the best. Naturally she is getting unsolicited advice from other relatives.

Going to add a bump for you…:)

Not a parent but love the Barnard location for a California kid. Is your D Jewish? Very strong Jewish community at Barnard, second largest in the US after Brandeis. http://www.hillel.org/hillel/Hillel_Schools_New.nsf/447500FF65FC24DA85256DCD0072F62F?OpenView&title=Jewish+Population&count=600&RestrictToCategory=26-50%

Mardad, you know my response. :)

Thanks, guys. Cheers, we are not Jewish, but as it turns out we do have a bit of Jewish influence in our family lore. (Two brothers, part of a family that had moved from Germany to Poland, moved again to Ohio in the early 1800s and settled down with two Methodist girls.) D would love to learn about the traditions. This may be part of what attracts her to Barnard.

Mardad:

The two are sooo different even as they are both excellent. Has she visited? I’m told that Barnard housing is mediocre; it may not matter, if your D is sold on being able to take classes at Columbia and having NYC as her playground. Wellesley is gorgeous; its campus is manicured and set in a manicured town. Because it is suburban, its single-sex character is more prominent. At the same time, the proximity to Boston means that on weekends, many students leave campus.

It really comes down to a matter of personal choice.

She is going to both for their open campus/ over night stay. I’ve told her that the decision is hers and she should ask herself how she would like to live on that campus for four years. Thank you , Marite. I’ll tell her to find out how many people leave on the weekend.
