Pretty sure that reality show would make all of us cringe, watching the mistakes by parents and kids along the way (heck, I cringe thinking about our first kid’s search!)
I was featured in two Wall Street Journal articles a few years ago. The reporter, Emily, was terrific. She contacted me via email back in the old format where this was a contact option. We did two or three phone interviews plus a bunch of emails for the first article. It was about “other” expenses and how families dealt with those for college. Since my kid was a music major, we had a ton of “other” expenses.
A couple of years later she contacted me again.
And after that, she interviewed my neighbor.
I guess I should have posted a link in the cafe for all to see.
When you work on a common goal, especially with women (moms), it’s inevitable that friendships form.
I still remember fondly the cloth diapering forum I used to post on back in 1999, and some of the members I became friends with.
This was so fun to read! Congratulations to those mentioned and to all of us!
Wow, v kool article, I feel honored to be rubbing virtual elbows in such rarified-ethernet air. Kudos CC mamas, and papas too! Y’all are some pretty great folks to sip coffee with, learn from, debate with, and sometimes lament with :-h
As far as reality, how about Real World - CC house! Like that old show on MTV lol “Six CCers picked to live in a house for six months and get real.” Pick the most adverse opionated posters and let the fur fly, I’d watch that. Wait I feel like I already do by being here :-@
Many of us were included in this fun book http://www.amazon.com/Neurotic-Parents-Guide-College-Admissions/dp/098345941X Not sure if the author is still on cc (oh yes-- she has logged in but not posted-- hi neuroticparent!)
Here’s a thread about it http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1302865-the-neurotic-parents-guide-to-college-admissions-is-out.html
Good timing. I was about to start a new thread titled, “Why am I (still) here?”, apparently it’s for the intellectual stimulation. When I created my username, oh so many years ago, I was very concerned about maintaining my sons’ privacy. Now that they are both out of school I don’t care, but the generic name (“resident of New Jersey”) lives on, inaccurately.
I was so thankful that I found cc when we started helping S1 look for schools. Neither DW or I had parents who had ever done the traditional college thing and our own experiences were much different that today’s world.
A couple of points I wish the author would have pointed out more directly:
- Many kids will not listed to their own parents’ advice, but will listen to another trusted adult…apparently even if that adult is a bunch of pixels on a video screen
- Many parents (like me) did not have great role models, or did not even go to college themselves. We need insight from someone who has been in the trenches before us.
- We may not all agree on the ‘best’ way, but for the majority of parents out here the goal is to help our kids and each other to find the best opportunity for them.
A big thanks to all of you willing to spend your free time (or your work time) helping us. I know I have felt compelled to share what little I know as my own way of paying it forward (or is that backward? i never really understood that phrase).
Re: TV game shows: Anyone remember “The Scholar” (2005) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scholar HS seniors competed for a full ride to their college of choice (I guess assuming they got in
) Winner went to Pomona
Congrats to those CCers highlighted in the article.
Yes, I do remember “The Scholar”. Actually, I wouldn’t have remembered the title of the show, but I do remember watching it.
Nice article! Yeah cc is an addiction. I never thought I’d still be on it 5 years later!
^^shellfell: Did your S get married yet? I forgot: was the wedding at the end August or end of Sept.? Congrats!
we need a big group photo of all our kids in their college tees or sweatshirts!
So says the person who has been deliberately vague about his/her own sex for 4 years. ![]()
Well played as they say.
I used to be assumed to be male fairly often, but I think my run of wedding threads corrected that.
On another forum, people often seemed to assume I was male, but my username here gives it away. I have noticed a bit of a difference in the way people respond to my posts.
People aslo used to assume I was male because my screenname sounds like a guys name. One guy was particularly harsh in his tone to me (we were from rival schools), but we back hanneled , he realized I wasn’t the gender he thought, and we became pretty good CC buddies!
GMT is a dad, ski. I thought you would have picked that up. Guess what I am.
ChoatieDad and FormerChoatieKid think it’s high time I leave this site and get on with my life but I’ve been around long enough that CC seems like family and I can’t look away. “Be there in a minute, honey, just checking my e-mail…”
ChoatieMom
ignore them!!
Its too much fun being here!
That’s your assumption; @GMTplus7 leaves us guessing.
Well that one was easy
For some reason, I had always assumed the members are male (until today, I also thought that @jym626 and @BrownParent were male). Since I’ve started moderating and having to read threads that I normally wouldn’t, I now assume that everyone is female.
