Wes during the summer

What goes on at Wes during the summer? Are there classes for wes students, for HS students, research? What kind of classes are offered for Wes students, if any? And, if the classes are offered, do wes students sometimes find that they have to take summer classes to fit in everything they need for their majors, or do they only take them if they want?
Thanks so much

Hey,

I’ve never stayed at Wes over the summer, but here is what goes on as far as I know:

A) The Writer’s Conference for a week in June. This is a writing workshop type thing, that is mainly for adult writers, though a few top Wes writers can go. Wes students can also apply to work at it; I think student workers get to go to the lectures and such.

B) At least last summer, they were having an intensive language summer program, for I think Spanish and Russian (maybe others?). Not sure if that is happening again.

C) There is tons of science research, which undergrads are involved in. Many science students I know have stayed at Wes at least one summer to do research with a prof.

D) There is also a lot of research in the social sciences, especially for things that involve data sets. Friends in gov, econ and soc have all stayed and done like, statistical analysis and dataset management and research. I’m pretty sure they were paid for it.

E) Lots of people get more mundane on campus jobs because they want to stay. There are jobs at the library, in admissions, in the IT department, etc.

As you will notice, this list does not include classes (other than the language thing), because Wes doesn’t offer summer classes. Although plenty of Wes students do take summer classes elsewhere for the fun of it or to complete a tricky double/triple major or something, it is definitely not expected. There is no reason one would not be able to complete a major (or a double or even triple, as long as one planned well) without taking summer classes.

That said, a lot of my friends who have stayed over the summer have loved it. I kind of regret never doing it.

summer classes may be an option in the not too distant future: [Roth on Wesleyan Blog Archive Wes Faculty: Scholars, Scientists, Artists?Mentors All!](Wes Faculty: Scholars, Scientists, Artists…Mentors All! – Roth on Wesleyan)

You can also take classes through th GLSP (Graduate Liberal Studies Program) like I’m doing. There are a wide range of courses available for course credit.
