In a skit concerning the new immigration bill, opponents are described as “worried the U.S. will become a backup country for illegal aliens – like Wesleyan.” Not sure if they meant Wesleyan is a haven for illegal aliens or if they are referring to Wesleyan’s status as an Ivy alternative. Anyway, who says, I don’t have a sense of humor?

Wesleying runs with it (yes, that’s me in one of the comments):

haha this coming from Jon Stewart. Didn’t he go to The College of William and Mary?

Well, in fairness to Stewart, he does play the role of incredulous straight guy to the whackoff Ivy Leaguer (who reminds me a lot of Dinesh D’Souza, now that I think about it.)

lol I don’t think he meant it as some on the Wesleying blog took it. It is nice to at least hear someone refer to Wesleyan on national TV.

Watching the whole segment, I do think they were referring to Wesleyan as a safety school; however, it was in jest and good fun. I laughed It’s a pretty weird joke to make (Wesleyan is often thought of as the weird pot-smoking not-as-good-as-Ivy alternative, not really people-who-badly-wanted-Harvard-and-couldn’t-make-it - that’s more a Tufts or JHU kind of joke, I’d venture, though that wouldn’t be completely fair to either of those fantastic schools, either), but I’m sure it’s all in good spirits. He was probably referencing something the audience said before the show.

Think of it this way: this is national t.v… They needed a college with instant name-recognition in order for the punchline to be funny. And, the audience reaction was interesting; there was a little pause as if they were saying, “What did he say?” and then almost a cheer went up as they got it. It might have worked with Tufts, or Middlebury or Bowdoin, too. But, then again, why should the writers take chances on a lesser known school? :D

“we need to make this point system for illegal aliens something like the SAT’s. We can’t be some saftey country. This is America, Jon, not Wesleyan.” I believe the quotation was something like that, and it was said by that aasif mandvi guy. I, too, think they Wesleyan for the name recognition and a little bit for the unfair reputation madjoy mentioned, but nothing was meant by it.
