Wesleyan Theater vs. Georgetown Theater

Does anyone think that one program is significantly better than the other for someone thinking about pursuing an acting career in film and/or television after college?

I don’t know anything about Georgetown’s Theater dept., but I know that Wesleyan is prety unique in the sheer amount of shows produced per yer thanks to the student run theater organization (Second Stage). The advantage is that it’s possible to be in a lot more shows at Wes than at a lot of other similar schools. Additionally, I’ve heard that the current department chair is seeking changes in the major requirements to make the program more rigorous, which may or may not be to your liking. Wes also has a highly recognized film program, and there are plenty of opportunities to be in student films, some of which are even good. In my day, the major did not offer classes in acting for the camera, and I’d be surprised if that’s changed. The department is very much about creating theater, not about film or TV acting. Why not call both departments and talk to some professors? In the end, I’m completely biased because I loved my theater education at Wes, and I know plenty of former majors who ended up working in the business, so it’s easy for me to say “pick Wes!”. But I’d argue that your choice of undergrad is not going to be the deciding factor of whether you work. As you doubtless know, it’s all about what you do with your education, your perseverence, and to a certain extent, your luck. It’s not as if you’re likely to meet Michael Bay or Jon Turtletaub wandering around the CFA. However, the Wes theater profs are great, and the students are very serious about improving their craft, and you can learn a ton and have the opportunity to be in a lot of productions.
You’ve got two great choices. Best of luck!
