Hey there…H just booked a rental car at LAX with a company called Fox? Never heard of them…

Any feedback? Is this another off-site company that we should stay away from with a 10 foot pole?

We are very long time planners; this is for December so no problem rebooking but they were the cheapest right now; we are signed up on auto deals to track…

I rented from them 4 times, twice at LAX, twice at San Francisco. I didn’t notice anything different renting from a name brand. Once or twice the service was superior, once or twice I had to wait for a long time but not anymore than with any other company. It was last year. So far, my credit card number has not been stolen.

They are a smaller, I believe Regional rental agency. Be sure to check the hours of their counter to be sure you can pick up/drop off the car. We have once or twice used a lesser known rental agency and gotten some pretty beat cars.
There are usually a ton of great rental deals with the major carriers. Have you looked on Flyertalk for good coupons/deals?

^^yes, most of the current coupons expire during the summer…that’s why I think we’re a little too far in advance but the good thing is that car rental reservations are never binding…

We are very loyal National Car Rental peeps…so we are tracking more than one reservation at this point…

Not trying to PR Fox, but their cars were not beat-ups and they keep standard hours. The only problem I had was their rental office in LA had poor drainage when it rained.

EDIT: I used to be a loyal National Car customer:)

We generally try Costco.com to book our car rental & then try to get our local AAA to match or beat it with Hertz. We then end up with some amazing deals and Hertz points due to our free Hertz Gold membership that AAA got us. Tried booking with Fox once but read some pretty awful reviews & decided to stick with Hertz, so have no personal experience with Fox.

Had a TERRIBLE experience with them at LAX. Got there only to find out that they didn’t have the car size requested – okay, that happens. But the only cars they had available were PT Cruisers (a car I find uncomfortable, with terrible sight lines) – both of which had freshly shampooed and very wet (and smelly) carpeting. It literally stunk, but we were stuck. As planned, I returned the car in San Diego – and then got hit with beaucoup extra charges because they didn’t put it into their computer system that I’d returned the car until more than eight hours later. (I returned it at something like 10AM – not middle of the night - They told me they couldn’t give me a receipt then because their computer was down.)

Despite much arguing and faxing of airline tickets showing that I was on a plane shortly after noon, and a gas receipt from the gas station a few blocks away with a timestamp of about fifteen minutes before I dropped the car, they still wouldn’t budge. They also put through an extra drop charge even though my printed confirmation included a much smaller drop fee already.

It finally took disputing the charge with Amex to make the problem go away. All I can say is, “buyer beware.”

I don’t know about Fox in particular but I’ve heard some of the rental companies, especially the ones not named Avis or Hertz, seem to sometimes try to stick you with paying for various damage on the car even if it was there at the time you rented it. I think they’re sometimes trying to make up revenue with these tactics. I’ve never noticed Avis or Hertz in this country pay that much attention and haven’t had an issue with either of them after hundreds of rentals. I also noticed Avis/Hertz prices are usually pretty competitive even when compared to some of the lesser prominent companies. They both need to be checked though because sometimes one is higher and other times the other is.

Regardless of who you rent from but especially if it’s Fox, make sure you check the car quite well for any pre-existing damage first and have them note it so you won’t get stuck with it.

I had a small local rental car company claim we put a nail in the tire & left it with a flat tire when we patronized them instead of one of the national chains (Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Alamo). We were very unhappy & they wouldn’t even cooperate & give us documentation so we could get the warranty to cover it under our credit card so we just finally contested it on our credit card instead. It was a lot of headaches and we vowed not to use them for future rentals. :(

Never tried Fox and doubt I ever will, especially with some of the things folks have experienced on this thread with them! Don’t have time or energy to be hassling with rental companies. May stop using Hertz because both of the cars we used in LAX had lingering tobacco/smoke smells that irritated H.

I stopped using Hertz a long time ago after they had extra charges that were not mentioned in the reservation. We used AVIS for a long time. Finally gave up after standing in line to check out a car a little too long a few too many times.

Too bad about FOX. I liked supporting a small no-name.

It depends somewhat on where you rent but I never stand in line at major airport locations since with Avis Preferred you just go straight to the car. If you can, join one of the Preferred/Gold/etc. programs and skip the lines. This doesn’t work so well for the small locations.

After hundreds of rentals, mostly with Avis but recently with Hertz, I’ve never been hit with an extra charge.

It was 15 years ago. I can’t quite remember. All I remember was it was big enough that I couldn’t ignore but not so big that I’d put up a fight.

My husband often rents from Fox when he has a layover at LAX. Nothing wrong with them whatsoever. They are cheap, no complaints, nothing funny. So unbelievably cheap, he’s gotten cars for $15/day.

Used Fox at Lax at least twice with no problems. Better prices even after looking into Costco, preferred programs and other affiliations available to us.
That said if I could get rates CLOSE to say, Hertz, I’d probably choose them. The bad reviews are troubling.
