West Dorm - q's

For a double room in west do the beds fit without lofting one above the other? Just want to make sure there is enough floor space. Also, if you want to raise the height of the bed do we need to bring risers, or does the bed frame accommodate for raising the height? Thanks!

I haven’t personally lived in West, but from my guess (and since North/East/West basically have the same floor plan), the chances are yes, you can have two beds that are delofted from the desks underneath them. However, chances are that you’ll need to stack the beds over the desks so that they overlap somewhat.

This means that you’ll probably want bed risers. You can change the height of the bed a bit, but if both members in the room want to deloft, you’re gonna have to do a little bit of positioning to get things to fit. Note that West might have also gotten earthquake retrofitted recently (I know East did, but I’m not sure about West), which means that some of the rooms might be slightly smaller than others (a few inches off of one side, for example).

You will lose floor space, but it should be manageable.

Most people would loft their bed above their desk if anything, I haven’t seen many bunk beds though I’m sure a few people have done them. There is enough room for a bed at each end of the room with the desks in the middle against the side wall, you’d be sitting essentially side by side with your roommate. The bed frame allows for some vertical adjustment but beyond maybe 4 feet high people generally use cinderblocks for some extra height. The ceilings aren’t that high if you decide to loft, there’ll be at most 2 feet between your head and the ceiling.

Thanks - also if we want to get a more comfortable desk chair is there someplace to store the chair that comes with the room?

I think there is a storage room in every one of the dorms (I know for certain that all of the inner dorms + Case and Linde have one). Dorm storage won’t be open until the upperclassman move-in day, but you’ll definitely be able to put your chair there once we’ve cleared some space. Just be warned that people occasionally take chairs out of storage, assuming that they don’t belong to anyone in particular. A couple of people sent frantic emails to the chat list for my dorm at the end of last year, and I have no idea if they ever got their original chairs back.

Yeah, I’d just put the chair in a corner or something. If you ever have other people in your room, which is likely, it’ll come in handy as well. Or you can just put books and stuff on it.

It fits nicely in the closet as an extra shelf.

those are good ideas!
