West Point Packing List

futurewarrior- The book says to bring all dental and medical x-rays, if sent to teh candidate by DoDMERB. So I’m not really sure what the answer to your question would be. I’m taking an extra copy of all my stuff just in case.

Yeah I just looked at the book, stupid question sorry. They never mailed me them back, so I’m not going to get new copies made.

Nah, nothing is a stupid question. I didn’t get any of mine back either. Mabey I’ll just call and make sure they have everything.

R-DAY PARKING FORM!!! lol I’m gonna have to pack all this stuff in those vaccum bags for it to fit one one “small” piece of luggage.

Lol thats kinda what I was thinking…one SMALL piece of luggage? yeah, OK.

Because I can’t resist…My $0.02.

Contacts - won’t need till after Beast
Ziplock Bags - Can buy there
Baby Wipes - can also buy there
Lotion - Can buy there
Perscription Meds - will be confiscated. Maybe a copy of the prescription?
Stationary - will be issued
Bug Spray - will be issued
Small Handheld Hair Dryer - nice, but not necessary. You’ll rarely have time.
Passport* - Not till after Beast…but may not be something you want to put in the mail.
Travel Reciepts - Be reasonable here. They don’t need a receipt for the $.75 toll, but they will for the $75.00 hotel room.

If you don’t have one yet, an accordian file with all your important papers in it is a useful thing to own in the Army. I still have mine…it went to Beast with me, to CTLT, to Airborne, my first PCS, BOLCII, BOLCIII, my second PCS, and currently collects all my important stuff here in Korea.

Bzzzt thank you so much for all the input. This is exacally some of the things I was wondering about.

Are swimsuits issued?

The accordian file is an excellent idea!

I noticed “social security card” on the list. I was wondering if this is necessary since my son has his SSN memorized.

You may want to add prepaid phone card to the list since you can’t have your cell phone during Beast.

how much sports equipment are we allowed to bring? i doubt all my catching gear (softball) will fit into one small piece of luggage… and when exactly are tryouts? i heard they would be on r-day sometime.

haha tryouts on R-Day

what is the deal with cell phones? we cant use them till after beast i know, so they will be confiscated then given back on or around A day? i am going to get a new provider for when im at west point, are there any recommendations for which provider is best at west point, and if it is a good idea to get it ahead of time or wait till some time after beast.

hey ccoll15 I’m a baseball catcher, I know what you mean! I think I’m just gonna bring my glove. I don’t think they expect us to pack all that stuff for tryouts.

futurewarrior, im glad you know what im talking about! im thinking of just bringing my glove as well and maybe some batting gloves. the assistant coach sent me an email asking where we would be staying so they could try to pick up our equipment. how nice of them!

Really? Have you contacted them before about trying out? Are you going to try out for the NCAA team or a club team? I would love to try out for the NCAA team, I don’t think I’m big/good enough to play really but I think that even being a bullpen catcher would be sweet.

we havent talked much about trying out, but im planning on trying out for corps squad!

For any cadet candidates and their parents: Please make sure you renew your drivers’ license if it will expire on or before R-Day. Without a valid photo i.d., you are not allowed on post.

I just got my license today!! And my passport picture. I’ve got the mug shot down baby :)

If you’re going out for a corps squad or club team that requires that much gear, definately see if you or your parents can drop it off at the field house before R-Day. That way you’ll have your gear…and the coaching staff knows you’re interested  Tryouts are in the afternoon sports period during Beast, they aren’t R-Day itself.

Swim suits are issued. For women it’s a one piece black racerback. For the guys, it’s the same PT shorts, they just don’t say Army on them.

Bring the social security card and birth certificate, I know I needed to furnish copies at some point. But if you haven’t memorized your social yet, DO IT NOW!!! Every piece of paper you fill out in the army has that on it.

Cell phones - ask your team leader when the AY starts, I had t-mobile, which wasn’t that bad in Ike or Sherman. My room mate had verizon and she had MUCH better reception than I did. You may also hold off on the phone until you’re a yearling and leave post more often…You can’t take them to class or carry them around, so you’ll almost always check your room phone and that voice mail more than your cell. I know that there was talk of new cell towers…as well as issuing phones to the corps. If that happens, let me know!

Any Army Brats out there? Be prepared for one of the more traumatic incidents in your life. I had to turn my dependent ID card in on R-Day. It was two and a half LONG weeks before I got a new one back. I’d had one since I was eight…very scary.
